Daniel Lavin’s life as a Software Engineer at Capcom

Jun 28, 2017 // Jeffery Simspon

At Capcom Vancouver we’re proud of the games that we make and even more proud about the people we get to make them with. Today we’re taking a look at one of those people behind the games as we sit down with one of the studio’s software engineers Daniel Lavin.

What does an Software Engineer do?

This is a very simple question with a very complicated and broad answer! It can typically range from building features and tools we use to build the game world to going around fixing bugs and optimizing the code base. The programming language we use in here is mostly C++, though some areas require knowledge in other languages (for example Python is great for systems). An engineer could also be helping debugging and problem solving for other areas which could range from animation, audio, narrative… There are many areas that engineers contribute to in game development!

What’s your typical work week look like?

As a Missions engineer, a typical work week includes ensuring that existing mission progression logic is working as intended and creating bits of reusable mission pieces that level designers put together into in-game missions. I also spend a lot of time helping other teams (such as level design, cinematics, metagame, etc.) to build or debug tools they need. Most of these new features are enabled through C++.

Sometimes I’m also improving/fixing prototypes that those teams are building, and help review their Blueprint code to point out possible problems that might happen with their implementation, or suggest alternate ways to achieve what they need. We also commonly have meetings where we’ll let other people know what we’re working on and what possible things might be blocking our progress.

How did you get into the gaming industry?

My first step into the gaming industry was here in Capcom Vancouver! Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve dreamt of working as a game programmer. After studying my undergraduate degree in Mexico, I came to Canada to study my masters degree in Computer Science. I studied in Canada specifically to find a job in the game industry in Vancouver. Fun fact: I’ve always wanted to work at Capcom – so just in case I couldn’t get into Capcom Vancouver, I also took a couple of years Japanese classes so I could apply to Capcom Japan as well.

What part of your job gets you most excited?

I love seeing other developer’s reactions to the tools I create. There’s a lot of happy people around me throwing high fives when the tool I made is setup easily and works as expected. My personal favorite happened when I pre-emptively added some code I thought would be useful before I was asked to, so when the designer asked me about adding that feature and I answered it’s already in he just high fived me immediately.

What about Capcom Vancouver gets you most excited?

The future of it! We’re slowly building many projects simultaneously, and all are looking incredibly cool and diverse. We have a weekly studio meeting where we get to see each team’s progress which is really awesome. As the Capcom fanboy that I am gets me super excited about the things I see here every day.

What’s your favourite place in Vancouver?

I’ve been in Vancouver for a year only, so I haven’t really explored the city. I haven’t found any place I could call my favorite spot. There’s a couple of events happening this year I’m interested in checking out though so that might change soon! As a fighting game fan though, I really have a lot of fun when I visit VSB (Vancouver Street Battle) where people gather many times a week to play fighting games. Sadly, I haven’t been able to go there in a while.

What is your favourite video game?

It’s easier to say my favourites for each genre! In general, Mega Man X without a doubt. Fighting games, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax . RPG, probably Digital Devil Saga , or Persona 3 FEs. Zombie game, Dead Rising and Resident Evil 0 are tied for me! FPS would go to TimeSplitters 3: Future Perfect … I could keep going all day long.

What do you do outside of games?

I usually make videos/tutorials on how to play fighting games (which you can totally find if you just look up my online tag “Barzorx” *wink*), go to tournaments (for fighting games…), and I also really like to learn new languages (half way through learning Japanese right now), and play/listen to music. I’m a terrible bassist and drummer, but I have a lot of fun playing them!

——————————

Jeffery Simpson : The promise of mini golf lured Frank West to Willamette and into another zombie outbreak, so we only felt it fair to give him some! Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf for Dead Rising 4 is out now on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam PC. This is the craziest and goriest golf experience you’ve ever seen with zombies, limbs and explosions all packed into six unique courses. Slap on an Exo Suit, grab a three iron and head on over to our launch blog for all the details.

——————————

Patrick Kulikowski : Attention all Maverick Hunters! In case you were swept up in the whirlwind of E3 2017, I wanted to call to mind these fantastic art pieces of X and Zero , beautifully drawn with copic markers by Owlboy creator Simon S. “snakepixel” Andersen ! It’s always great to see X’s bike from Mega Man X2 getting its due; Overdrive Ostrich’s stage just wouldn’t have been the same without it.

Game composer/guitarist Alyssa Menes busted out a quick, albeit awesome, ditty of Toshihiko Horiyama’s “Mr. Reus ~ The Masked Magician” from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice on her acoustic guitar. We’re crossing our pointer fingers for a longer version of this arrangement someday!

And while we’re on the topic of good ol’ Capcom jams, the rockstars over at Capcom Live performed a rich set of iconic tunes at AnimeNEXT in Atlantic City, NJ on June 11, 2017. Watching this Monster Hunter performance footage from attendee Viperas has got me all pumped up and very jealous of my East Coast friends. This rocking arrangement included Tadayoshi Makino’s “Zinogre Theme” from Monster Hunter Portable 3 rd and Masato Kouda’s unforgettable “Proof of a Hero” Monster Hunter theme.

Additional fan footage can be found on YouTube, including music from Ace Attorney(additional clip here ) , Devil May Cry 4, Okamiand much, much more!

STICKY NOTE: Did you make something cool? Send us a note or drop a comment below; we would love to feature your work here! Same goes for any awesome stuff you may see in the wild; we always welcome more fantastic fan work. =)

——————————

It’s a very exciting time to be a Capcom fan and I can’t wait to be sharing more info on our upcoming games, like the recently revealed Monster Hunter: World, so keep your eyes on the main blog reel for all major Capcom announcements and news. Till next time!

More School Costumes heading to Street Fighter V June 27th

Jun 22, 2017 // Harrison Young

On June 27th, the School range of Street Fighter V costumes will be expanded to include R. Mika, Nash and Ibuki. These three students of the game will join Chun-Li, Ryu and Juri in the street fighting school of hard reads and learned blocks. Hit the jump to check out the new costumes!

Letting her hair hang low with thick specs, friendship bracelets and sensible shoes, R. Mika takes a leaf out of the traditional sailor-style school uniform that can be seen in Japan. Here’s hoping that Nadeshiko still recognizes her during recess.

Going for a white gakuran uniform that’s reminiscent of Kyosuke Kagami (shout-outs to Rival Schools!), Nash looks just as ready to hit the books as he does a crush counter. He also sports a hall-monitor sash that shouts, “skip class at your peril, punk.”

Rounding out this academic trio is Ibuki in her traditional fuka school uniform. These threads aren’t as rugged as her ninja dogi but we have it on good authority that the bomb capacity is just as generous. That red scarf also pays respectful homage to her fellow Capcom ninja, Strider Hiryu.

Stay ahead of the grading curve by picking these costumes up for $3.99 each at the end of the month.

If you’re looking to checkout the previously introduced school costumes, check out our blog post !

Hit the fairway and the zombie hordes with Frank West in Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf out now

Jun 20, 2017 // Jeffery Simspon

“You said we were gonna play mini golf!” – Frank West, Dead Rising 4 .

Frank West was promised mini golf and he’s going to get mini golf, as Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf launches today on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam.

Bringing three modes of zombie stroking play to the tee (Online Multiplayer, Local Multiplayer and Single Player), we’ve constructed a challenge for the most avid undead golfer. With Frank in the announcer’s box offering the most colorful of color-commentary, players will take control of Connor, Isaac, Jessa and Jordan as they compete on six different courses each with four holes. Armed with an arsenal of 3 clubs, players will have a Driver for long range shots, a Wedge for shooting over obstacles and of course a Putter for putting the ball in the hole.

Players will also be able to use the Ball Buster, a wheel of misfortune that allows them to randomly select a player (including themselves) and add a status affect that can change the game such as; bouncier balls, reduced shot power, a sped up or hidden shot meter and new obstacles on the course. Truly screw over the competition for extra hilarity by playing cheap and dirty.

Of course, a Dead Rising game wouldn’t be complete without the ability to pulverize zombies in a unique fashion, and driving the ball through the undead hordes will give players Zenny, the Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf currency. This earned currency can be used to buy awesome character customization options that will let players outfit their character with a variety of new skills and looks including:
– 8 unique club sets; higher level clubs have longer range and larger sweet spots to get you closer and more accurately to the hole
– A variety of golf balls that can have explosive effects when you get the perfect shot
– 20 Exo Suits to purchase, with a variety of different colors to fit your style
– Over 10 unique helmets to add flare to your character

Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf is included as part of the Dead Rising 4 Season Pass for $24.99 (USD) / €19.99 / £16.24, which is available for purchase in the Microsoft Store and on Steam. Players can also get the pack as a standalone purchase for $9.99 (USD) / €9.99 / £7.99, or get the game and Season Pass together in the Dead Rising 4 Digital Deluxe Edition which is $79.99 (USD) / €79.99 / £54.99.

If you haven’t had a chance yet to pick up Dead Rising 4 , download the game from the Microsoft Store and play the first hour for free before you buy.

From zombie infection to golf swing perfection, Dead Rising 4 is the ideal excuse to stay inside this summer. To keep up-to-date on everything Dead Rising follow us on Twitter and LIKE our Facebook page .

Thanos joins the battle against Ultron Sigma in the latest Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Story Mode trailer

Jun 13, 2017 // Harrison Young

Wow, where to start with this week’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite updates? As you can tell by the headline, one of the biggest pieces of news is Thanos joining the heroes in their battle against Ultron Sigma – but can the Mad Titan be trusted in a battle with the Infinity Stones up for grabs?

You’re not seeing things, folks. Our heroes (and villains!) will scour the merged universe in search of the remaining Infinity Stones – that means trips to areas that weave iconic Marvel and Capcom locations together! In this trailer, we see Knowmoon and Valkanda, two areas we’ll discuss more in the coming weeks. But for now… oh man, a Dah’ren Moran is staring down the Hulk and The Grandmaster is in cahoots with Ultron Sigma! Get your first taste of this unprecedented adventure in our FREE Story Demo, available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One!

T’Challa, the Black Panther and King of Valkanda, must choose the precise time to join this deadly battle, but for now, he must protect his people from the hordes just outside the reach of the Time Stone. Panther will indeed join the battle as part of our post-launch character lineup, which comes included as part of the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Deluxe Edition. Six characters will release after the game’s September 19 th launch, though only Sigma and Black Panther are currently revealed…

You likely spotted some newly announced characters in today’s visual blitz. This week, we’re pleased to reveal the Guardian of the Galaxy’s Gamora, the Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe, as an all-new playable character. She’s joined by returning Marvel heroes the human rocket Nova, the Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange, and the previously mentioned Thanos, while the Capcom roster gains Zero, Spencer, Dante and noble knight Arthur. Peep their new abilities in our latest gameplay trailer, which also reveals the power of the Reality Stone!

Captain Marvel fans, PS4 will be your platform of choice because it’s the only place you’ll be able to use the exclusive Major Carol Danvers Costume! Before she was saving the universe, Carol was an accomplished U.S. Air Force pilot and could often be seen sporting this flashy jacket and shades combo. Scrap in style!

There’s still infinitely more to talk about, so keep your eyes and ears open for more reveals throughout the summer, and as always, follow the Marvel vs. Capcom social accounts for up-to-the-minute news!

E3 2017: Announcing Monster Hunter: World, releasing globally early 2018

Jun 13, 2017 // Yuri Araujo

Introducing a brand new entry in the beloved co-op action RPG series, Monster Hunter: World, coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One early 2018!

It was roughly 13 years ago when I first saw a game I would fall in love with. The idea of venturing into the wilderness to battle menacing monsters with my friends while wielding massive weapons was the perfect combination of all I ever wanted out of a video game. I’ve been hooked for years and have hunted many monsters in this addictive series, constantly marveling at what the development team comes up with in each new game. Now with Monster Hunter: World, there will be a fully functioning ecosystem that I can’t wait to dive into.

As illustrated in the Announcement Trailer above, this latest entry brings hunters around the globe to a brand new world built from the ground up with stunning visuals to support completely new ways to hunt monsters. Our development team in Japan has created a living, breathing ecosystem of interactive flora and fauna. This ecosystem plays a key role in every hunt, allowing you to use natural environmental traps and even the hierarchy of the food chain itself as part of your strategy in battle. Leading your target to its natural predator is fantastic way to get the upper hand, if you can avoid getting yourself into more trouble.

Also for the first time in the series, Monster Hunter: World will see a global simultaneous launch window, along with a unified cross-region online multiplayer server! So now you can start planning hunts with your friends, no matter where they live.

Monster Hunter: World will be launching worldwide early 2018 on PS4 and XB1, with a PC version coming at a later date. We can’t wait to show you more of this beautiful world, and I’m sure you can’t wait to see more, so join me, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and directors Kaname Fujioka and Yuya Tokuda for a live chat about this new project straight from E3 on Thursday June 15, at 12:30pm at twitch.tv/capcomunity. See you there!

UPDATE: We’ve just released all-new uncut gameplay footage, featuring a full Quest. Watch it here.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Patrick Kulikowski : I know, I know – we all already understand that Yoko Shimomura’s “Guile’s Theme” from Street Fighter II goes with everything. But did you know that video game heavy metal band Powerglove goes well with “Guile’s Theme”? The American power metal band has cooked up a really cool rendition of the popular theme that makes me want to mosh just as much as it makes me want to aggressively comb my hair in triumph.

And while we’re on the topic of my personal go-to Street Fighter II character, I wanted to give a shoutout to cosplayer and artist Zee for their magnificent cosplay of Guile. If only I could pull off that kind of hair + American tank top leotard combo! It’s no “easy, operation”.

——————————

Stephanie Palermo : C’est magnifique is this inspired Ace Attorney Trés Bien cosplay? At Fanime 2017, cosplayers owen_miyabi and 2D Mirage , as Maya Fey and Jean Armstrong respectively, dined on what we hope were poison-free pastries in the name of this great photo opp.

Miss Maya also joined the gang at a classy establishment for another memorable photo. The development team actually had the pleasure of meeting some of these cosplayers in person back at Anime Expo 2016 and greatly appreciate the continued dedication to such fantastique Ace Attorney cosplay! Kudos to photographer marq4porsche for capturing these moments.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC this August!

Jun 05, 2017 // Kellen Haney

The legacy continues with Mega Man Legacy Collection 2! Bringing together four of the Blue Bomber’s adventures in one package with loads of bonus content and challenges, this collection spans the evolution – and retro revolution – of the classic side-scrolling series starting August 8th on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC for $19.99 both digitally and at retail in North America! Read on for the trailer and more info below.

Check out the trailer here!

The original Mega Man Legacy Collection focused on Mega Man’s original 8-bit adventures, and now, Legacy Collection 2 takes things into a new era.

Mega Man 7 introduces new concepts to the classic series such as an in-game store, which allows you to purchase helpful items with bolts you’ll find throughout the game. Pits aren’t a problem when you have a Beat Whistle to summon Mega Man’s friendly bird ally and save you from your fall! On top of the big visual jump from 8-bit to 16-bit with this entry, Mega Man 7 also introduces a new rival for the Blue Bomber, a mysterious robot named Bass and his robotic wolf companion, Treble.

Mega Man 8 jumps into the 32-bit era with a vibrant splash, bringing even greater detail to animations and sprites and introducing voice acting to the series for the first time. Jump (jump!), slide (slide!) and shoot your way through gorgeous and unique levels in Mega Man’s quest to put a stop to Dr. Wily’s evil plans. Experience an epic, intergalactic story that tells the tale of Duo, a robot from space in search of an insidious power source known as Evil Energy, via fully animated and “famously” voiced cutscenes.

Mega Man 9 sparked a retro revolution with a return to the series’ 8-bit roots. In a shocking twist, it seems like Dr. Light’s robots have gone berserk, landing Dr. Light in jail! Dr. Wily claims he’s blameless, but you just know he’s up to no good. It’s up to Mega Man to save the day with classic gameplay that brings it back to basics, while keeping some modern flourishes like a helpful in-game store. Plus, play as Mega Man’s eternal rival, Proto Man, or take on an additional robot master, Fake Man, in bonus add-on content included with MMLC2.

In Mega Man 10, another rival joins the cast alongside Proto Man, adding Bass as a playable character in a challenging 8-bit quest to put an end to the “Roboenza” epidemic (or in Bass’ case, prove that he’s the strongest robot). Once you’ve busted the out-of-control Robot Masters in the main story, take on the challenging Mega Man Killers in their own unique stages that originally released as DLC and come included in this collection. Claim their weapons as your own for permanent use in Mega Man’s story in the main game!

If all that wasn’t enough, new players can easily get into the game with the “Extra Armor” option that reduces damage taken by half, as well as convenient checkpoint saves to pick up where you left off if your adventure doesn’t go quite as planned. For hardcore players or those that like a good challenge, new stage remixes and challenges await in Challenge Mode. Go for gold and compete for top placement on the online leaderboards!

Finally, a full museum is also included, packed with an archive of production art, sketches, development materials, concepts, and more. There’s even a music player to listen to all your favorite tracks from each game.

Whether you’re taking a trip down memory lane or checking out these games for the first time, there’s plenty to do and see in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. If you’re at E3 this year, be sure to swing by the Capcom booth for a demo!

Head over to megaman.capcom.com  for the latest news, as well as info on where to pre-order a physical copy!
