High quality Street Fighter II soundtrack coming from Brave Wave

Jul 09, 2015 // Minish Capcom

As part of the SDCC festivities today, Brave Wave and Capcom announced a forthcoming Street Fighter II album that collects the CPS1 and CPS2 OSTs in one outstanding package. The team at Brave Wave have used their own techniques to extract the CPS1 tunes at their highest quality… AND will have them approved by composer Yoko Shimomura!

From Brave Wave’s own website:

“Brave Wave proudly unveils its new project: the GENERATION SERIES . The groundbreaking series is an endeavor to present collectible remastered video game soundtracks to fans, employing talented programmers, consultants, and professionals to ensure that each release is of outstanding quality.

“Brave Wave is partnering with the visionary team at Capcom to launch the first Generation Series release this year, the Street Fighter II Official Arcade Soundtrack. The soundtrack release will include new remasters of both CPS1 and CPS2 versions of the arcade game, extracted directly from the arcade boards (CPS2 extraction methods TBD)and approved by original composer Yoko Shimomura.

“Fans of physical media will be treated with a double album that features liner notes by Yoko Shimomura and Polygon.com features editor Matt Leone. Additionally, and for the first time in the series history, we will present with Capcom a limited edition vinyl release, carefully and especially remastered in translucent colored vinyls with art prints sourced from the Capcom archive.”

“The Generation Series is directed and supervised by Mohammed Taher and Marco Guardia, who previously worked together on the Brave Wave albums World 1-2 , In Flux , the ongoing Retro-Active Experience  albums by Keiji Yamagishi, and more. The Generation Series name, logo, and packaging have been designed by Cory Schmitz, who previously branded Brave Wave, Oculus, Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica, and more.”

More on this soon, but keep your eyes on the  Brave Wave Generation Series  site for additional updates. It should be noted the album art and design are all temporary and we’ll have updated designs later this year.

I’m a huge fan of Brave Wave and have been working closely with the team to bring this reverent, 2-disc set to VGM fans around the world. The SFII soundtrack is without a doubt one of the most popular game OSTs of the early 90s (the whole 90s? ever?) and to hear those kickin’ CPS1 tunes with a new level of clarity will be hot stuff.

MMLC Robot Master List: Bubble Man

Jul 09, 2015 // Minish Capcom

Number: DWN-011

Weapon: Bubble Lead

Weakness: Metal Blade

The first underwater robot created by Dr. Wily.  He’s pretty cute when swimming around. Make use of your higher jump and attack him.

While he’s a bit goofy to look at, Bubble Man is expertly built for underwater combat. His maneuverability may only manifest itself in the form of tall leaps and controlled descent, but hey, he’s doing’ his own thing. I’m sure he’s better prepared for underwater battles than Wood Man!

As you battle Bubble Man, be aware of spikes that line the ceiling. These one-hit-kill baddies are even more dangerous is a room where your own leaping ability is enhanced by the water!

The Bubble Lead hugs the ground, tracing a path that both deals light damage upon impact and alerts you to possible invisible pits. The latter only happens a few times late in the game, so for the most part you’ll use this against Heat Man and – surprisingly – the final boss, who’s weak to only the Bubble Lead.

Bubble Man is often my first stop in modern MM2 replays, since the stage is pretty tame and the music is so good! The stage always reminds me of when this game first released and I played it at a friend’s house… on a black and white TV! Still a lot of those things floating around in 1988-89.

And as Uchida-san will mention below, discovering that Bubble Lead was the only way to beat the last boss was quite a suspenseful moment. The way that whole final area unfolds is so tense – especially for the NES era, and for 8~10-year-old kids!

Art from the Mega Man Legacy Collection Museum Mode

Takekuni Uchida,  Rockman Unity administrator

“Not to fall second to Toad Man in terms of comical animations, it’s hard to tell if Bubble Man is a weak boss or a strong one, but one thing’s for sure: you just can’t hate the guy.

“I don’t recall ever having trouble against him, and the weapon you obtain from him, the “Bubble Lead,” seemed completely useless as an offensive weapon when I first tried it out, so much so that I completely forgot about it midway through the game. But then I realized you could use it to sniff out pitfalls. ‘Whoa!’

“And then, as you all know, there was the final boss. Nothing seemed to damage him, no matter what you did. I’d exhausted all the energy from all other weapons—Mega Man was near-death! All I had left were… those stupid bubbles I’d all but forgotten about.

“And then, the impossible happened. ‘Whoa!’ I uttered, once again.

“It was like a suspense movie, where you find out the person you least suspected was the bad guy all along! (Is Bubble Man Keyser Söze?!)

“Realizing the importance of the Bubble Lead gave me a new respect for him. Bubble Man offered a sort of “subtle flavor” to Mega Man that taught me the fun of strategizing and discovery in these games. That, and to not judge a book by its cover—everyone has something good to offer.”

David Oxford , The Mega Man Network ( +Robot Master Field Guide )

“Ah, poor Bubble Man. Among all the Robot Masters, is there any to be more sympathetic towards? Maybe, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves.

“Bubble Man was designed to excel underwater… and nowhere else, really. Unlike Mega Man, he was designed to be able to swim well (and even when Mega Man learned how, he wasn’t all that good at it — perhaps that’s why he stopped?). But while he could swim, his original waterproof design didn’t allow him to walk on land, only jump around. This was enough to send Dr. Wily into fits of laughter upon seeing it — a laughing stock, even to his own creator! How can you not feel sorry for that?

“To make matters worse, there is his special weapon: the Bubble Lead. To this day, people disagree on whether it’s supposed to be pronounced “ˈled” (as in the metal) or “ˈlÄ“d” (as in “leader”). Either way, the weapon is seldom used throughout the course of the game. Then again, there is one use for it which may just give Bubble Man the last laugh in the end .”

MMLC Robot Master List: Air Man

Jul 08, 2015 // Minish Capcom

Number: DWN-010

Weapon: Air Shooter

Weakness: Leaf Shield

A robot with a unique design who has a strong fan installed in his stomach. Be prepared to take some damage and just keep firing at him.

Like Metal Man before him, Air Man was built for combat. His built-in fan can produce powerful gusts that push Mega Man away or generate mini-tornados that fly across the screen. His unique design strays from the usual “humanoid” approach and instead goes for a full-on “evil robot” look; his eyes are built into his torso!

And while he can’t shake the ground like MM1’s Guts Man , Air Man’s sprite is quite large and makes him one of the heftier Robot Masters. If it weren’t for Wood Man he’d tower over the MM2 cast.

Beat Air Man and you’ll walk away with the Air Shooter, which fires the aforementioned mini-tornados in an upward arc. This would be a helpful weapon for areas with enemies above you, but once again the Metal Blade can take care of that with ease. Instead it’s best to use this against Crash Man and maybe Quick Man.

Back in the MM2 days, Air Man was always my first stop due to a suggestion by yesterday’s momentous Nintendo Power coverage . The stage wasn’t too difficult, and other than a few seemingly unavoidable tornado swarms he was an easy boss to beat. As you can see from the photo above, I’m something of a “fan” (wow that wasn’t even intentional) of his design and have a PixelBlock version standing on my desk. Built him with as much excitement as Dr Wily, I bet!

David Oxford, The Mega Man Network (+Robot Master Field Guide)

“For some, he might have been the first Robot Master many a player took on in Mega Man 2, thanks to something of an odd recommendation from Nintendo Power magazine’s guide to the game. For others, the fact that he’s the one Robot Master who somehow managed to generate a very popular meme/song celebrating his inability to be defeated is enough to burn his blue and yellow visage into their minds. And for others still, maybe they just couldn’t get over the bizarre face/head given to him by the Ruby-Spears animated series.

“Of course, it’s how odd it was to see that very head in the first place that helps illustrate part of what makes Air Man so memorable. He was the first to use the type of design that would be named for him — the ‘Air Man Type,’ which is basically when a Robot Master lacks a head and instead has their face placed across a large torso.”

MMLC Robot Master List: Metal Man

Jul 07, 2015 // Minish Capcom

Number: DWN-009

Weapon:  Metal Blade

Weakness:  Metal Blade

A robot whose design is based on that of Cut Man. The key is to watch his quick movements and dodge his Metal Blades.

After suffering a thorough defeat at the hands of Mega Man and Dr Light, Dr Wily rebounds with an assortment of EIGHT deadly Robot Masters… and the first off the line was designed specifically for combat against the Blue Bomber.

Like Cut Man, Metal Man is quite speedy and tosses a sharp projectile. Unlike the Rolling Cutter , however, the Metal Blade travels in eight directions and flies across the entire screen. A much better weapon, for sure!

The Metal Blade kinda sorta (actually does) give Mega Man an unfair advantage 😛

The 8-way firing and rate of fire make it a solid choice for just about any moment or level in the game, and its usefulness against bosses (including Metal Man himself!) really seals the deal. And on the meta side of things, the idea of 8-way firing was itself a fairly unique concept in early NES games, so that was another part of the weapon’s “wow” factor.

I’m old enough that I remember MM2 releasing and getting some great coverage in Nintendo Power (one of my favorite covers ever!). I probably read this issue… actually I can’t even guess how many times! Like, every day until the next issue came out?

Anyway, of the eight new Robot Masters, Metal Man stood out as a “cool” boss, so on the playground he was a great character to pretend to be and fight the other kids. Surely we all did that, right??

Ryuji Higurashi (Mega Man series illustrator)

“With a straightforward cool design, supremely useful special weapon, a fun ‘dodge-and-shoot’ battle, and an awesome stage tune on top of all that, I think it’s safe to say Metal Man is a top-tier character.”

David Oxford , The Mega Man Network ( +Robot Master Field Guide )

“Sometimes you just manage to nail it the first time. That’s more or less what Dr. Wily did once he decided to start creating his own combat-oriented Robot Masters instead of just reprogramming Dr. Light’s industrial bots, starting with DWN-009: Metal Man.

“A robotic ninja who takes the ideas pioneered by Cut Man to the next level, Metal Man sports a cool design and hangs out in a visually busy stage with a nice industrial tune to go with it. But let’s face it, the big reason almost anyone loves Metal Man isn’t any of that; it’s his weapon, the Metal Blade.

In Mega Man’s hands, the weapon is powerful, can fire in all directions, and best of all, uses very little energy. It’s so handy as to all but effectively replace the Mega Buster as players’ defaults upon acquiring it that some people will hold ‘no Metal Blade’ runs of the game just to make things fair to the game itself. Even the actual ninja shuriken of Shadow Man were nowhere near as potent as this!”

Surprise bonus today! Comment below with your own Metal Man thoughts and I’ll choose someone as the winner of this lovely Metal Man keychain!

Street Fighter V BETA Breakdown

Jul 07, 2015 // ComboFiend

What’s up everyone? With the first BETA for Street Fighter V fast approaching on July 23 rd , we felt that this would be the perfect time to let you all know what you can expect when you log in and also answer some questions that fans have voiced as of late.

Continue on for further BETA details!

The first BETA kicks off on July 23 rd (18:00 PT), July 24 th (03:00 CEST/10:00 JST)) for 5 days and is exclusive to PS4 users. The primary purpose of this BETA is to test the online net code, as this is something that Capcom is taking very seriously with Street Fighter V. The data that we receive from this BETA will help us to improve the net code in the final product, so we thank you in advance for participating in the BETA.

Here are some other details about the BETA:

Characters

Throughout the course of the BETA, all 6 characters will be available. This means that players will be able try out all the characters that were present on the E3 build. To set expectations clearly, the BETA will roll out with four characters playable immediately, with Birdie and Cammy becoming playable on Saturday, July 25 th . The reason for their delayed release is that in addition to testing out the net code, we’re also testing out our new content delivery system

Gameplay Flow

When players boot the game up and go past the start screen, they’ll be taken to the character select screen.

Players should choose the character they would like to fight others with, as they will not be able to select a different character before heading into battle.

Once they select their character, players will be placed into training mode while an opponent is found. Upon finding an opponent, players will be transported back to the versus screen and begin their match shortly thereafter.

After the match is complete, players will then be brought back to the Grid where they will go back into queue for the next match.

Unfortunately there will be no local versus mode during this BETA. Once again, the primary purpose of this BETA is to test the online functionality.

Stages

While players are awaiting their match, they’ll be training in the Grid. Versus matches will take place in either theBustling Side Street (China), Terminal Station (London) or in the brand new stage the Forgotten Waterfall. Here’s a look at what the Forgotten Waterfall looks like.

Look familiar? Maybe you’ve seen the top of it in a previous Street Fighter. Each of the stages has been inspired by various locales throughout the world with the Forgotten Waterfall’s inspiration being directly pulled from New Zealand.

PS3 Stick Functionality

At this moment in time we’re currently evaluating PS3 joystick and controller functionality for the final product. That said, PS3 joysticks and controllers will not work for this BETA.

Now that you know what to expect, players should read up on how the new battle systems work to get ready for battle. For those interested in signing up for the BETA, please read the instructions below and follow those which pertain to your region.

USFIV Patch 1.04 for PS4 Out Today

Jul 07, 2015 // ComboFiend

Sony and Capcom’s continued efforts to ensure that the PS4 version of USFIV is indeed the definitive version of USFIV continue with patch 1.04, which was released earlier today.

Continue on for a list of what was included in today’s patch.

Today’s patch contains the following changes adjustments:

  • “Skip” function mapped to Cross button during cinematics
  • Default character costume colors 11 & 12 are now unlocked
  • Anisotropic filtering improved on all stages and characters
  • Antialiasing added on all stages and characters
  • Reduced pixilation on various UI elements
  • Multiple audio balancing fixes
  • Addressed multi-hit audio issues
  • Increased resolution of visual effects
  • Sonic Boom graphical fix
  • Fixed multiple localization and font issues
  • Improved save functionality performance
  • “Press Start” replaced with “Press Options”*

* Note that “Press Start” isn’t a bug — it was originally left in intentionally as a tribute to Street Fighter IV’s arcade roots, but due to players’ requests, we have changed it to “Press Options.”

—-

These changes are in addition to the previous patches, which have addressed the PS3 input lag and other minor graphical issues. Once again, Sony and Capcom are committed to the PS4 version. Thank you all for your continued support.

MMLC Robot Master List: Elec Man

Jul 06, 2015 // Minish Capcom

Number: DLN-008

Weapon: Elec Beam

Weakness: Rolling Cutter

A robot who controls electricity. He’s a strong enemy with speed and power to match. Take him down quickly with a weapon that plays on his weakness.

Probably my favorite of the MM1 bosses, Elec Man always felt a bit like a legit super villain. That mask and color scheme reminded me of Marvel’s Electro, and his powers were the easiest to immediately equate with comic books. Super strength could be any of a billion characters. Bombs & blades too. But hurling electric beams felt right out of a Spidey comic.

This strong design is backed by Elec Man’s abilities – he’s considered among the strongest overall MM1 Robot Masters (according to Dr. Light, that is!). His original purpose was to monitor the power of nuclear power plants, which is not something you hand over to just any industrial robot.

But, like the rest of the MM1 Light Numbers, Elec Man must be taken down. Doing so nets you the Elec Beam, an attack that, as a kid, I felt was surging with energy. Its three-way attack, combined with the bizarre sound effect and flickering presentation made it stand out from the rest.

Elec Man’s pulpy design moved me so much that I made a PixelBlock of him several years ago. He’s been chilling on my desk ever since!

That wraps up Mega Man 1! Tomorrow Metal Man kicks off our look at Mega Man 2, which as you know is part of the Legacy Collection due out this summer on PS4, Xbox One and PC, with a Nintendo 3DS version coming later this winter.

MMLC Robot Master List: Fire Man

Jul 03, 2015 // Minish Capcom

Number: DLN-007

Weapon: Fire Storm

Weakness: Ice Slasher

A waste disposal robot who controls flames reaching temperatures of around 8000 degrees. His Fire Storm is tough to dodge, so be sure to attack with a weapon that plays on his weakness.

Wherever there’s an Ice Man , there must also be a Fire Man – and this one is capable of generating flames that reach 8000 degrees! Now, my solar knowledge is a little rusty these days but I think the surface of the sun is right around 10,000 degrees, making Fire Man’s projectiles quite formidable. And a little overboard!

Like Ice Man and the rest of MM1’s cast, Fire Man had an initial purpose – burning trash. Well, it’s a bit more involved than that I’m sure (he’s sort of a living incinerator), and waste management is a crucial piece of any civilized society. Which begs the question, once Wily took Fire Man away from his duties, did all the trash pile up in, uh, ” Monsteropolis ?”

After reducing Fire Man to shimmering circuitry, you obtain the Fire Storm. This is quite the handy ability as it not only shoots a projectile outward, it also sends a fireball spinning around the Blue Bomber. This offense/defense weapon is great against the Copy Robot and Wily’s machine at the end.

While Fire Man was never my “favorite” Robot Master, I’ve always liked his design. There’s an “elemental knight” vibe going on, and the ever-present flames leaping from his head really complete the look. Another interesting point about Fire Man is that of the original six Robot Masters, he’s the only one with cannon  hands. Elec Man tosses beams from his hands, Ice Man apparently shoots ice from his mouth and so on. So he’s unique in that regard!

Art from the Mega Man Legacy Collection museum

One final note – Fire Man used to be my biggest pain to beat with just the buster. After looking into some tips online, I found a great strategy is to stay exactly where you land when entering his room, and then simply jump/shoot straight up as Fire Man shoots his flame from mid-room. He’ll get caught in a loop where he doesn’t get any closer, nor does he increase his firing rate. You just jump/shoot from the same position over and over. A very simple (if slightly cheesy) way to get that perfect victory 😛

MMLC Robot Master List: Bomb Man

Jul 02, 2015 // Minish Capcom

Number: DLN-006

Weapon: Hyper Bomb

Weakness: Fire Storm

A robot who, together with Guts Man, used to clear land for development. Be sure to damage him before throwing the Hyper Bomb.

As a Light Number robot, Bomb Man was originally intended as an instrument of good. His Hyper Bomb and overall knowledge of demolition tools made him a great asset out in the field… until Dr Wily reprogrammed him and set the events of Mega Man 1 into motion.

After defeating Bomb Man you obtain his Hyper Bomb, which can be hurled a short distance and used to take Guts Man out in just a few hits. The blast radius is rather large, so whether you’re tossing the bomb or avoiding Bomb Man’s attacks, consider this weapon’s range when it’s on the screen!

It’s worth noting that Bomb Man sports a robo-mohawk (robohawk? rohawk? work with me here) and a wrestler-like physique emphasizing his sturdy size. Ready for action and a striking visage – two great things to have when battling Mega Man.

Bomb Man has always been my first stop when replaying MM1. His pattern is pretty simple (basically keep running at him, stay close & he’ll hop away without tossing a bomb) and the stage is similarly easy. However, as a kid I had no idea you could switch weapons after beating a boss. Weapon stealing and swapping was a unique concept at the time, and the particular cart I rented had no manual.

So, this being 1988 with no internet and not much magazine coverage, I played those first 8 bosses (unsuccessfully, I should add) for many days. Then one day I dropped the controller while the game was paused and heard a “BLIP!” noise. When I unpaused the game, Mega Man was green and I could toss bombs! So Bomb Man also has a special place in my heart as the very first weapon I ever used.

Brian aka “Protodude” ( Rockman Corner )

Bomb Man holds the dubious honor of being the fastest and easiest boss to beat in MM1. You can take him down pretty easily with just the buster! He gets a lot of flack for this but I like him. From a design standpoint, he’s oozing with character: the ’80s punk mohawk, a grin from ear to ear, and a big round belly. And hey, I even hear he enjoys bowling and fireworks.

Of all the Robot Master stages, I’d say Bomb Man’s holds the most variety in terms of enemies and terrain. There’s explosions and bullets flying all over the place, Joes lying in ambush, and spikes out the wazoo. To top it off, we’ve got these huge ominous spheres looming in the background. I dunno; Bomb Man is just so  cool.
