Breath of Fire I – III Original Soundtrack Collection now available on the Capcom Store!

Oct 21, 2016 // Patrick Kulikowski

Great news, classic role-playing game fans! Starting today, Breath of Fire and game music aficionados in North America, Europe and Oceania alike can purchase and download the original soundtracks to the first three Breath of Fire games!

Breath of Fire I ~ III Original Soundtrack Collection, previously exclusive to Japan, can now be downloaded on the Capcom Store – altogether that’s a spicy 192 DRM-free MP3 tracks for just $14.99!

The first three BoF games were composed by the prolific Capcom Sound Team “Alph Lyla”, who also worked on a slew of other beloved Capcom games. You might recognize their aliases in the credits of some of your favorite retro titles:

Breath of Fire (SNES)

  • Yasuaki “Bun Bun” Fujita (Mega Man 3, Final Fight 1 & 2 )
  • Mari “Mari” Yamaguchi (Mega Man 5, Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts )
  • Minae “Ojalin” Fujii (Mega Man 4, DuckTales 2 )
  • Yoko “Piiâ’ª” Shimomura (Street Fighter II, Final Fight )
  • Tatsuya “ANIE” Nishimura (Final Fight 2 )

Breath of Fire II (SNES)

  • Yuko “YUKO.K” Takehara (Mega Man 6 & 7, Marvel vs. Capcom )

Breath of Fire III (PS1)

  • Akari “Akari.K –Lemon” Kaida (Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man Battle Network )
  • Yoshino Aoki (Mega Man Battle Network 2, 3 & 6 )

Leading up to Breath of Fire’s North American SNES debut in 1994, Capcom was already a champion of videogame music. At this point, the memorable tunes of  Mega Man  and  Street Fighter II were constantly inspiring countless fans. Since  Breath of Fire  was our company’s first 16-bit flagship RPG, it’s no wonder the composers wanted to go all-out with the score.

And boy, they sure did! Ever since my childhood days, the music to this series continues to fill me with a sense of awe and wonder.

Breath of Fire’s  music is largely classical and orchestral in nature. The main concept behind the music is “piano concerto,” in which a piano is accompanied by a whole orchestra. This is immediately evident with the first few tracks you’ll hear in the game, such as the dramatically moving “White Dragon” during the prologue and “Blood Relation”, which hits you with its wondrous Chopin-like arpeggios (a quick succession of notes going up and then back down) the moment you begin a new game. When the trumpets and strings of the world map theme “Starting the Journey” kicked in, I truly felt like I was in the boots, tunic and cape of Ryu, the game’s dragon-morphing hero.

The story in Breath of Fire II is darker than its predecessor, and the music reflects that in many moments. The title screen music “The Destined Child” will raise the hairs on the back of your neck with its ominous onset, and then instill you with a feeling of triumph with its rousing orchestral outro. Fans will appreciate the game’s battle music – themes like “Cross Counter” and “I’ll Do It!” could have easily found a place within any SNES  Mega Man X  title with their rock-solid (pun intended) guitar licks and fast-paced drumming.

Finally, the Breath of Fire III soundtrack took the idea of a classical JRPG soundtrack and turned that concept completely on its head, providing pop and jazz fusion that gelled perfectly with the game’s colorful sprites and 32-bit environments. Try putting on the battle theme “Do Your Best!” for a pick-me-up; the groovy bass and rock organ solo are sure to please. Or, if you need something more mellow, “Casually” is the perfect “chill” world map theme to kick up your feet and relax to.

Whether you’re in the mood for the orchestral and rockin’ flair of Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire II or the pop/jazz fusion of Breath of Fire III, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy. But enough of my rambling; grab the soundtracks here and enjoy!

And just in case you’re in the mood to conquer evil, explore fantastical worlds filled with talking anthropomorphic animals and morph into powerful, fire-breathing dragons, Breath of Fire just landed on the New Nintendo 3DS eShop, and can also be purchased on Wii U alongside Breath of Fire II. Breath of Fire III, re-released earlier this year, can be purchased on PlayStation Store for PSP, PS Vita and PSTV.

Breath of Fire blazes onto the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console

Oct 20, 2016 // Patrick Kulikowski

Here’s some red hot news for those of you who own a New Nintendo 3DS and love classic JRPGs. Breath of Fire is now available on the North American Virtual Console!

The game will run you $7.99 USD, and I hear the Zenny-to-USD conversions are looking favorable these days. Being the first RPG I ever played as a six-year old kid, the original Breath of Fire holds an enormously special place in my heart, so in celebration of this 1994 SNES classic’s portable release, let me tell you why this game kicks so much butt!

1) DRAGONS!

As you can tell, Breath of Fire stars Ryu, a blue-haired silent protagonist who belongs to the Light Dragon Clan – a peaceful bunch of human-like dwellers who prefer to keep their dragon-morphing abilities in check. But when Emperor Zog and the evil Dark Dragon Clan lay waste to Ryu’s village and intend to reawaken a goddess to fulfill their greedy desires, it’s up to Ryu to reawaken his dragon transformation abilities and restore peace to the world.

Ryu’s dragon transformations are a sight to behold – they give him an added strategic boost in battle, and, simply put, his dragon forms are the ultimate showcase of player empowerment.

2) A fascinatingly fantastical world

While we’re all pretty used to day and night cycles in videogames in 2016, the fact that a 1994 RPG like Breath of Fire was able to have this was a really cool effect that gives the world a sense of realism. Naturally, townspeople (and guards…hint hint) will be asleep and have their doors locked at night, and certain events and people may appear depending on the time of day.

The world map is filled to the brim with hidden nooks and crannies and long-lost landmarks that are just begging to be re-discovered, and the game’s blend of humans and anthropomorphic dragon, wolf, bird, ox, fish, serpent and mole populace add to an already diverse and interesting lore.

3) All of your characters matter

We’ve already covered Ryu’s dragon abilities, but it doesn’t stop there. Not only is Ryu a pro fisherman, but his seven companions all have important abilities and unique personalities at play throughout the entire game:

  • Nina is a winged healer that eventually gains the ability to morph into a bird and fly your crew all over the world map.
  • Bo is a wolf-like Grade-A archer who can hunt wildlife on the world map for extra healing items.
  • Karn is a sly thief and master of unlocking who not only can disarm booby-trapped chests, but can fuse with other characters to morph into powerful mutated creatures.
  • Gobi may be a greedy businessman/fish, but he’ll eventually learn how to turn into a big fish underwater to take the party to new areas.
  • Ox is an enormous, muscular tough-guy who can punch through walls and rustle trees to gain access to new places and items.
  • Bleu is an ancient, sultry, all-powerful sorceress who can turn the tide of battle with her devastating magic.
  • Mogu the mole can burrow into dirt patches and uncover hidden items on the world map.

4) An outstanding soundtrack

The game’s orchestral music, composed by Capcom Sound Team’s “Alph Lyla”, is an underrated gem. Not only is the game filled to the brim with catchy melodies and grandiose crescendos, but there’s a neat feature with how battle and world map themes are handled. After reaching the halfway point in the game, the game’s battle theme will change completely. Additionally, after certain major plot points, the world map theme will change as a means to reinvigorate the player.

By the way, we just released the first three Breath of Fire soundtracks as a MP3 collection on the Capcom Store. Check it out!

5) Cameos!

Without giving too much away, you’re bound to find a few familiar faces as you progress through your journey, especially if you’re a Street Fighter II, Ghosts ‘n Goblins and Mega Man fan!

Excited yet? Now it’s your turn to experience the magic of this game. Take a deep breath [of fire] and grab the SNES classic now on the Nintendo eShop on your New Nintendo 3DS and/or Wii U eShop for $7.99.

And if you’ve played this one before, whether back in the 90s on Super Nintendo, at the turn of the century on Game Boy Advance, or recently on Wii U, I’d love to hear your favorite memories about it in the comments below!

Resident Evil 20th Anniversary U.S. Truck Tour Recap

Oct 17, 2016 // Kellen Haney

The Resident Evil 20th Anniversary U.S. Truck Tour has been bringing PSVR demos of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, challenges for Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6, a unique Snapchat filter, and plenty of commemorative merchandise all across the country! Since the initial kick-off in San Francisco, the truck has been traveling across the United States, with stops in sixteen different states so far. Check out the official site for the latest locations, and read on for a recap of where the truck has been at its last few stops!

Checking in with the horror fans of Wichita, Kansas, the truck tour saw over 200 people show up, including a dedicated group of Umbrella cosplayers. Is it really safe to be carrying a T-Virus case around like that? Not to be outdone, plenty of fans showed off their tattoos and their love of the Resident Evil series, too. The PSVR Lantern demo, shown only on the tour and at a few events so far, earned plenty of scares, too, as players tried to evade the clutches of Marguerite Baker, one of the residents of the mansion you’ll explore in Resident Evil 7 .

Days later in Des Moines, Iowa, over 130 people turned out to check out the tour, including our 20th Anniversary challenges for the series’ modern hits, Resident Evil 4, 5 , and 6. We even had a number of soldiers who were eager to see what PSVR had to offer. Just like with many of the truck tour’s stops, those who pre-ordered Resident Evil 7 also got some exclusive bonus gifts!

Since leaving San Francisco, the truck has also been through Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Richfield, Minnesota, and will soon be making a number of stops throughout the East coast, bringing RE7 PSVR demos and exclusive 20th Anniversary merchandise with it. Want to know where the truck is headed next and see if it will be coming to a city near you? Check out the official tour site for the latest list of stops, and follow the Resident Evil Facebook page to show your interest and check in for events near you!

If you can’t make it out to the tour, don’t forget that Resident Evil 7 biohazard will be fully playable with the included optional PlayStation VR mode when it launches on January 24th, 2017. You can also check out the intense “Kitchen” demo, available now on the PlayStation VR demo disc in North America.

Mega Man X2 dashes its way into the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console (NA)

Oct 06, 2016 // Yuri Araujo

New Nintendo 3DS owners and retro gamers, rejoice!  Mega Man X2 is now available on the North American Virtual Console!

The game goes for just US$7.99 , but in keeping with a #ThrowbackThursday spirit, here’s what I think makes this game really special and worth revisiting:

1) Green Biker Dude

The game starts you off on one of them futuristic hover bikes, and that’s already pretty rad… but notice the Reploid in the background? Some say that Maverick Hunter–now popularly known as  Green Biker Dude is destroyed in the first few seconds of the game. Pretty grim for a KA-rated game at that time, but the good news is now Green Biker Dude lives on forever as meme .

2) Dash from the beginning

The original  Mega Man X , also available on the Virtual Console , gave our beloved Mega Man gameplay mechanics a velocity boost, allowing the dev team to add more platforming challenges and faster enemies. It was amazing, but you had to get that through the Dash Boots Upgrade. Now, in  MMX2 , you get that from the very beginning of the game!

And the cool thing is the Dash Boots Upgrade is still a part of  MMX2 , but this time, it gives you an Air Dash; literally my favorite video game mechanic of all time.

3) Wheel Gator

Actually, not much to say here; I just really like his name and design, and for some reason, every time MMX2 gets brought up, I immediately think of this guy. Anyways, since we’re on the topic of  MMX2 Mavericks, which one’s your favorite?

4) X-Hunters

Violen, Serges and Agile; throughout the game, this trio would chase X down, appearing in random stages, providing an extra level of challenge. Defeating them wasn’t the easiest feat–especially if you were having a bad run and encountered them with your health on the low end–but it really paid off in the end. However, if you  don’t defeat them…

5) Battle against Zero

In the first  MMX , we get to see Zero come in, save the day in the beginning and make an ultimate sacrifice at the end. In this game, Zero is allegedly dead, but you have the opportunity to rebuild him by defeating the aforementioned X-Hunters; failing to do so will result in Zero being reconstructed and reprogrammed for pure evil… and you have to deal with it. This is the first time we get to fight against Zero, making it an extra special moment. It’s also the first time we get to see him using the Z-Saber!

6) Shoryuken!

Mega Man X gave us the overpowered  Hadouken Mega Man X2  builds upon that tradition bringing us the mighty  Shoryuken ! Judging by the GIF above, I’d say it’s worth the trouble of chasing it down. 😉

Well, that about covers it from my side.  MMX2 fans out there, let us know your favorite moments/features in the comments.

And for those of you interested in picking up this Super Nintendo classic, hit up the Nintendo eShop on your New Nintendo 3DS or Wii U  for just  US$7.99 .

Get spooked out at Capcom’s NYCC 2016 booth

Oct 04, 2016 // Yuri Araujo

Capcom is headed to New York Comic Con this weekend (Oct 6 – Oct 9), and this year the main theme for our booth ( #1420 ) is scary and spooky video games! Details below.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Starting off with the real scary stuff, we’re bringing you a terrifying VR demo of Resident Evil 7 biohazard. The disturbing “Lantern” demo makes its US event debut at NYCC. This is a great way to better get to know the recently introduced Marguerite of the unsettling Baker family in a playable found footage section from the game. You can meet the Bakers in this lovely trailer, where they seem very concerned about how much you’ve been eating lately.

Coming January 24, 2017 – PlayStation 4 (with full game optionally playable in PS VR), Xbox One and Windows PC

Dead Rising 4

Now, moving on to a light-hearted take on the scary and grim reality of a zombie apocalypse… where the dead rise. The Dead Rising 4 show floor demo puts you in the shoes of Frank West, who, in turn, puts himself in new shoes—the EXO Suit—that turn out to be a great tool for kicking some serious undead butt.

Coming December 6, 2016 – Xbox One and Windows PC

Street Fighter V

Finally, adding a dash of spookiness to the otherwise not-scary-at-all Street Fighter V, you get to have early hands-on with the upcoming Premium Halloween costumes and Halloween-themed stage . And if you fancy yourself a competitive player, join our various on-site daily tournaments where winners can take home exclusive PlayStation 4 faceplates!

So if you’re attending NYCC this weekend, be sure to stop by our booth ( #1420 ) and check our games out!

Ace Attorney Character Profiles: Larry Butz and Miles Edgeworth

Oct 03, 2016 // Kellen Haney

“When something smells…”
Series veterans will know exactly how to end that sentence, but newer attorneys may not have heard of Larry Butz until playing Turnabout Time Traveler, a full-length DLC case for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice released just last week. It’s time to turn back the clock and take a closer look at both of Phoenix’s childhood friends with an encore profile for Larry Butz and Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth!

Way back in Phoenix’s profile , we mentioned the impact that Larry had on Phoenix’s career, detailed during the events of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. In fact, Phoenix’s very first case as a lead attorney was defending Larry against accusations of murdering his girlfriend, Cindy Stone. Larry didn’t make things any easier on himself during the trial, though, with his sour attitude and constant need to talk doing him more harm than good!

(From Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy )

Despite Larry’s constant outbursts almost spelling defeat for Phoenix, the fledgling attorney was able to find the truth of the matter, delivering a decisive blow to the prosecution and proving Larry’s innocence.

( From Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy )

Since then, Larry has managed to bounce back, though it seems as though he’s learned very little about how to keep his mouth shut and his personality in check. In fact, he’s popped up during a few of Phoenix’s investigations, having been spotted selling hot dogs during an incident at Gourd Lake, working as a security guard for KB security when the Sacred Urn of Kurain Village was stolen, and later billing himself a children’s picture book artist under the pseudonym Laurice Deauxnim. Even so, it seemed like wherever trouble was, Larry was there, too. And as they’ve said ever since grade school, when something smells… it’s usually the Butz.

The long-standing saying seems to be the case in the recently released DLC chapter, Turnabout Time Traveler, when Larry insists that he’s about to marry a woman who’s not only already betrothed, but is also suspected of murder – and that’s after she says she travelled through time!

Of course, the history of Phoenix and Larry goes back even further than that first court case, with Larry being one of the people who came to Phoenix’s defense when he was accused of stealing in a classroom trial. The other person to defend Phoenix was none other than Phoenix’s long-time rival….

Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.

Edgeworth has had a long and illustrious career as a prosecutor, despite being the son of a well-known defense attorney, Gregory Edgeworth. After an incident involving his father when he was younger, Edgeworth was taken under the wing of the ruthless prosecutor, Manfred von Karma. While he initially spent the rest of his childhood and teenage years in Germany, Edgeworth returned to the United States as a fully-fledged prosecutor at just 20 years old. Believing that the only way to achieve justice was to prove everyone guilty, Edgeworth maintained a perfect record throughout his early years, oftentimes in spite of accusations that he had resorted to unscrupulous methods to achieve guilty verdicts. Earning the nickname of “Demon Attorney,” Edgeworth remained undefeated until the trial of Maya Fey put him in a direct showdown with his childhood classmate and friend, Phoenix Wright.

(From Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy )

The result of the trial rattled Edgeworth to his core, with a series of cases and events that followed eventually causing him to leave the prosecutor’s office – and the country altogether, leaving only a distressing note in his absence. However, after traveling abroad, Edgeworth eventually returned with a new outlook – he no longer wished to see every suspect guilty, but rather looked to find the truth of each case he was assigned to and determine a person’s guilt based on facts.

By Spirit of Justice, Edgeworth’s skills have seen him promoted to the position of Chief Prosecutor, where he is keeping a watchful eye on the prosecutor’s office and occasionally taking on investigations of his own. It seems as though he doesn’t set foot in court too much these days with the responsibilities he has now. Even so, circumstances have forced Edgeworth’s hand and he must now take on Phoenix in court as a prosecutor during the events of Turnabout Time Traveler! If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can grab it now and see if the “Demon Attorney” has lost his edge (spoiler: nope).

(From the Turnabout Time Traveler DLC case for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

And that’s it – our final set of profiles for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice. I don’t think I’m alone as an Ace Attorney fan in saying I wish I could travel back in time myself to rediscover all the zany characters and stories of the franchise, let alone the characters, returning and new, in Spirit of Justice. To all the ace attorneys out there who have been there from the start, those who have only just picked up the series with Spirit of Justice, and those who just needed a bit of a refresher, thank you for reading through and learning more about these wonderful characters. We’ve finally reached the end, which means there’s only one thing left to do. Say it with me now:

OBJECTION!

Game Informer & Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 Super Replay

Oct 02, 2016 // Tim

Update:  Episode 11 – the exciting conclusion to this Super Replay – is now available. Thanks so much to the Capcom-Unity and Game Informer communities for watching!

Capcom and the intrepid editors of Game Informer have united once again to play through the entire epic that is Resident Evil 4. Now is the perfect time to return to RE4, with the classic third-person horror title coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this week, August 30 (for just $19.99!).

I’m excited to join Game Informer’s talented Super Replay editorial crew – Andrew Reiner, Jeff Cork, Kyle Hilliard, & more – for this marathon playthrough series. For the uninitiated, I worked at Game Informer before joining the lovely Capcom team, and spent many hours recording Replay episodes. Resident Evil 4 was always high on my list of dream games to feature on Super Replay, and I’m ecstatic we are making it happen.

Capcom and Game Informer have a rich history of partnering up for Super Replays. Greg Moore joined the GI crew to play through all of Mega Man Legends 2 , and Brett Elston helped GI survive Resident Evil Code: Veronica . I’m honored to continue the tradition!

New episodes of the Resident Evil 4 Super Replay will be airing on Sundays and Wednesdays until the evil Saddler is nothing more than a smoking pile of robe. You can check out new episodes by returning to this blog, visiting Game Informer’s website , or subscribing to GI’s YouTube channel . We encourage you, the RE community, to play along and reminisce on this classic in the comments from episode to episode.

With no further ado, let’s join Leon S. Kennedy on this fated mission to rescue the President’s daughter from the deadly Ganados…
