Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak – Capcom Showcase June 13, 2022 Recap

Jun 13, 2022 // Joseph Bustos

Illuminating the trail ahead.

A new locale, new monsters, a free demo, and a look ahead at the future of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak were revealed in today’s Capcom Showcase.

We’ve got a lot to cover, so let’s get to it! First up, here’s our latest trailer.

The Jungle area from the second generation of Monster Hunter games swings into the hunt! Now in Sunbreak, you’ll be able to venture your way through the region’s scenic sandy shoreline, all the way to the lush and dense greenery that challenging monsters call home.

Exciting hunts await you in the Jungle, featuring veteran monsters and fresh faces. Speaking of monsters…

The Ultimate Frontier

We’ve already revealed a few monsters coming in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, but of course there’s still plenty more to share. How about we start with a highly requested (and VERY exciting) fan favorite?

Say hello to the flagship monster from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Gore Magala! There’s a lot of you experienced hunters out there who have been asking for Gore Magala’s return, so hopefully this reveal had you on the edge of your seat. This sinister six-limbed blind wyvern brings its signature Frenzy Virus to the battle, marked by the black and purple mist it scatters.

Espinas, the Thorn Wyvern, makes its grand return to the series. For many this might be your first introduction to Espinas since it’s only appeared in Monster Hunter Frontier. Its signature venomous pink horn at the front of its head poses a serious threat. And if that wasn’t enough, Espinas can unleash powerful toxic fireballs. It may look threatening at a glance, but this monster loves getting its beauty sleep and hitting snooze – absorbing a few attacks before finally waking up.

Is that some kind of cave demon? Nope! Turns out, Shogun Ceanataur isn’t the only carapaceon coming to Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. Today we revealed a small look at the returning Daimyo Hermitaur. Your attacks will be useless when it uses its massive claws to form a tough shield. Those claws aren’t just for defense, either – they could rip a hunter apart! Concentrate, and focus on your hunting techniques with this one…

Eagle eyed hunters might have had suspicions that a new Rakna-Kadaki subspecies was discovered. We’re excited to finally share the details. Meet Pyre Rakna-Kadaki, a fiery subspecies that turns up the heat with flame infused silk strands and, of course, superheated Rachnoid.

The Hunt Starts Now!

Your chance to go hands-on with Sunbreak is almost here. The demo for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak releases on both Nintendo Switch and Steam on June 14 shortly following 7 p.m. PDT. Explore the new Jungle region, go toe-to-toe with a few Sunbreak monsters, and try out new hunting actions.

If you’re new to Monster Hunter Rise or just looking to clear out your hunting cobwebs, the beginner hunt against a Great Izuchi and the intermediate hunt facing off against a Tetranadon are great entry points to learn (or remember) the basics. There’s also a few training quests to get you familiar with the game’s mechanics, including the new Switch Skill Swap.

Want to step things up a notch? With the expert difficulty, you’ll be challenged with slaying the electrifying Astalos, one of the new monsters in Sunbreak.

It wouldn’t be a Monster Hunter demo without a big challenge. Try battling Sunbreak’s flagship monster Malzeno in a super tough advanced quest! Remember, this hunt is a special challenge tuned just for the demo, and has a shorter time limit than what you might experience when the full game comes out on June 30. That said, it’s a great way to test your skills and square off against this powerful new monster.

A Sneak Peek at the Future…

Thought we were all done? Not quite. Free title updates for Sunbreak are on the way!

A tower illuminated by moonlight marks the backdrop for a returning locale: Forlorn Arena. Also appearing seemingly out of thin air is the azure scaled Lucent Nargacuga. We’ll have much more to share about the August update in the future, but for now we’ll keep things shrouded in a bit of mystery.

The August update is just the first free title update coming to Sunbreak. There’s more on the way in 2022 and beyond. Take a look at the update roadmap for a preview of what’s to come.

That wraps it up for the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak updates featured in the Capcom Showcase. We hope you enjoy the demo and you’re even more hyped for launch on June 30. As always, follow the official @MonsterHunter social channels for more updates to come in the future. Happy hunting!

That’s all we’ve got for now, but keep an eye out on the Capcom USA Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for more news as it drops!

Guile Returns in Street Fighter 6 Along with His Sonic Swagger!

Jun 09, 2022 // Andy Wong

America’s hero is back! As revealed at Summer Game Fest 2022, Guile returns in Street Fighter 6 when it launches in 2023 – and brings his endless swagger with him. As a US Air Force pilot who fights for his country, Guile succeeded in dismantling Shadaloo and avenged his friend Charlie Nash. Although he enjoys living the family-man life, a new mission now awaits.

Guile’s move set in Street Fighter 6 combines his signature moves with fresh additions. He is one powerhouse of a character who retains his ability to keep opponents at a distance. Splatters of green and yellow paint cover the stage when Guile utilizes the Drive System, harkening to the colors of his classic look.

Guile’s Sonic Boom and Somersault Kick (Flash Kick) are set to make their triumphant return in Street Fighter 6. What would Guile be without them, right? Sonic Boom is Guile’s main projectile ability and travels across the stage while Somersault Kick is an instant upwards move that can protect from airborne attacks.

Guile’s Sonic Blade from Street Fighter V returns as a Special Move rather than a V-Skill and sees him placing a stationary aerial slash in front of him. Sonic Blade can then be turned into a two-hit projectile if combined with Sonic Boom.

Let’s go over all three of Guile’s Super Arts, which reflects his journey as one of the most well-known World Warriors!

Sonic Hurricane (1 Stock) – Introduced in Street Fighter Alpha 3, Guile fires a massive aerial slash directly ahead. If used with a Heavy Punch, the aerial slash fires diagonally upwards as a good anti-air option. An extremely versatile move that can be used in combos, to counter projectiles, or as a way to turn the tables when being pressured.

Solid Puncher (2 Stocks) – Introduced in Street Fighter V as Guile’s V-Trigger I, Solid Puncher is now a Super Art. Guile envelops both arms in aerial slashes and enables the use of Sonic Break, where a flurry of small Sonic Boom projectiles can be unleashed simply by pressing the punch buttons.

Crossfire Somersault (3 Stocks) – A brand new Super Art, Guile puffs his chest and fires a massive aerial slash that launches the opponent into the air before following up with a brutal Somersault Kick.

That’s it for now when it comes to our coverage of Guile – who remains a Chad! We’ll be back with more character reveals and more info on World Tour and Battle Hub in the months to come. Stay tuned! Street Fighter 6 is scheduled for landing in 2023 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC! Visit the official website for more information. streetfighter.com/6/

Street Fighter 6 Redefines the Genre in 2023

Jun 02, 2022 // Andy Wong

Your Moment. Your Fight.

Street Fighter 6 officially hits the scene in 2023 on PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC! With explosive style, a diverse roster of characters, and a new system built for creativity, Street Fighter 6 will redefine the genre and welcome players from all gaming backgrounds.

Beginning its journey back in 1987, the Street Fighter series has attracted a wide spectrum of fans including pro players, artists, collectors, cosplayers, and more. Every person has a different reason for playing Street Fighter and in Street Fighter 6 there’s something for everyone. The game will feature modes from previous titles including – Arcade Mode, online matches, Training Mode, local versus battles, and more – all contained within Street Fighter 6’s Fighting Ground game mode. We’re also bringing two brand new modes called World Tour and Battle Hub to expand upon Street Fighter 6’s unbeatable gaming experience.

Modern Graphics with a Coat of Graffiti

We’re happy to announce that Street Fighter 6 is being developed on Capcom’s own RE Engine – previously used to create Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter: Rise. The RE Engine enables the development team to bring-to-life fine details like individual muscles tensing up, cinematic Super Arts, and special stage effects like cherry blossom petals twirling along with each character’s movement, all in an effort to enhance the gameplay experience like never before. Pair these enhancements with the splashes of paint and street aesthetic, and you get the distinct art style of Street Fighter 6.

A Diverse Roster of Characters

Street Fighter 6 wouldn’t be Street Fighter without its iconic roster of characters. Returning to the fight are the legendary Ryu, Chun-Li, and Luke who have undergone slick new character designs dripping in style. The first new face to join the Street Fighter 6 roster of World Warriors is Jamie, a breakdancer with a unique move set featuring his ki-unleashing drink.

Ryu continues training on his endless quest to find true strength. Well-mannered and sincere, he travels the globe in search of worthy opponents. Having overcome the Satsui no Hado, he now yearns for something greater.

Ryu has new moves to reflect his growth over the years. He uses Hashogeki to concentrate his ki in his palms and unleashes it a short distance forward. It’s useful as a follow-up after block strings and combos. During Denjin Charge, Ryu envelops his fists with the Power of Nothingness, enhancing special moves such as Hadoken and Hashogeki. Ryu is vulnerable while performing this move, so careful timing is critical.

Chun-Li is a former agent from the ICPO (International Criminal Police Organization). She now looks after Li-Fen, a victim of the Black Moon Incident from Street Fighter V.  With Shadaloo now fallen, Chun-Li teaches kung fu classes and has become a beloved member of the local community.

Like the legend she is, Chun-Li also has new moves in Street Fighter 6. During Tensho Kicks, Chun-Li rises into the air with a flurry of kicks, which is useful for countering an opponent’s jump attack or to close out combos. She also has a new Unique Move called Serenity Stream, which sees her positioning herself close to the ground. During this stance, Chun-Li’s each normal attack button produces different attacks.

Luke uses his background as a contractor for a private military company to teach mixed martial arts. He spends his days off eating junk food, playing video games, and challenging opponents to a good old fight. Nevertheless, he always has victory in his sights.

Luke’s DDT is a powerful throw activated after the first hit of an Overdrive (OD) Flash Knuckle and is useful for dishing out extra damage. His Fatal Shot fires an additional shockwave after an OD Sand Blast to secure more damage after trading projectiles.

Jamie is a self-styled Chinatown peacekeeper who aspires to walk in the footsteps of Yun and Yang, the Twin Dragons. An expert dancer, Jamie places justice and friendship above all else, defending his town with martial arts.

The Devil Inside is Jamie’s signature move where he takes a swig out of his ki-unleashing drink to raise his Drink Level where higher levels unlock additional moves – and changes his appearance. Jamie can use Luminous Dive Kick at Drink Level 1+, where he extends his leg after a forward jump and quickly drops to the ground.  Another Special Move is Bakkai, which can be used at Drink Level 2+, where Jamie slides along the ground in a series of rotating, upside-down kicks. This move does heavy damage, and is useful when performing combos against opponents that have left themselves wide open.

A Modern Control Type for Everyone

For those who are worried that fighting game inputs are too complicated, we would like to introduce you to Street Fighter 6’s Modern Control Type, where a special move can be performed by combining the “Special Move” button with one directional input. Furthermore, simple combos can be performed by holding down the “Assist” button and continuously pressing some of the attack buttons. Take a look at the chart below to see how much easier it is to perform your character’s flashiest attacks, including Drive System moves. As you can also see, the Classic Control Type is still available for more seasoned players. Feel free to switch between the two!

A Battle System Built for Creativity

Street Fighter 6 marks the debut of the new Drive System, which includes both new and familiar features that will test your creativity. The Drive System allows you to use five different techniques to enhance your offense and defense. Using these techniques will deplete the Drive Gauge, which consists of six Drive Stocks. Some techniques use more stocks than others. While the Drive Gauge does replenish over time, if you happen to run out, you’ll be temporarily put in a vulnerable state called Burnout. During Burnout, if your opponent hits you with Drive Impact in the corner of the stage and makes your back slam against the wall, you’ll be Stunned – that’s right Stun works differently in Street Fighter 6.

Take a look at the image below for a list of the five techniques, how many Drive Stocks they cost (or replenish), and the controls to activate them.

Street Fighter’s First-Ever Real Time Commentary Feature Brings the Hype

Let’s announce another new feature while we’re at it, the Real Time Commentary Feature. A few well-known Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators and notable faces are lending their voices to be featured in Street Fighter 6. They will offer dynamic real-time commentary as your matches go on and provide easy-to-understand explanations about gameplay. The Real Time Commentary Feature will also support subtitles in 13 languages for more accessibility. The first commentators to hype up your matches are Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez and Aru! We’ll unveil more commentators at a later date.

New Foundations

Street Fighter 6 contains three foundational pillars, each with multiple features or additional modes under them. In Fighting Ground, you will get the classic (and upgraded) fighting game experience, complete with the core modes you expect. The other two pillars are exciting new additions to the series. World Tour is a single-player immersive story mode that pushes the boundaries of what a fighting game is and allows you to leave your own legacy within Street Fighter 6 with your player avatar. Battle Hub, which was briefly shown at the end of Announce Trailer, will also offer players new and unique ways to engage and communicate. Both World Tour and Battle Hub will require a deeper dive in the future, so keep an eye out!

This isn’t only “Your Moment. Your Fight.” It’s your creativity, your ambition, your drive, and your legacy. We have so much more to share in the future leading up to release. Street Fighter 6 will be available in 2023 on PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC!

A reimagined Resident Evil 4 is coming to latest-gen Consoles in 2023

Jun 02, 2022 // Kellen Haney

Survival is just the beginning.
A re-imagined Resident Evil 4 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 24th, 2023!

Dirt compressed into a makeshift path from years of foot traffic. A lone crow alights on a branch in the distance, staring out into a bleak, surreal sky. The wooden skeleton of a tree that no longer grows, yet seems to cast a growing shadow over the road ahead. A little shack in the distance where a man is milling about inside, stoking embers in the fireplace as the crow makes a single, lonesome caw…

For many fans, including myself, it only takes a moment to conjure up memories of Resident Evil 4. From the game’s slow-burn introduction to its final moments of thrilling escape, Resident Evil 4 was a turning point for the franchise. Today, we’re proud to announce that the timeless classic will be reborn in 2023 using the RE engine, delivering truly next-gen visuals, modernized gameplay, and a reimagined, deeper storyline while faithfully preserving the essence and maintaining the legacy of the original.

Set six years after the events of Resident Evil 2, an older and significantly toughened Leon S. Kennedy has been shaped by his experiences of enduring the disaster that wiped Raccoon City off the map and events beyond. Now reporting directly to the President of the United States of America, Leon is given a new assignment: To locate and rescue the President’s kidnapped daughter.

Tracking her location to a secluded village in the European countryside, Leon prepares to take his first steps into another nightmare that reaches far past reason. Both long-time fans of the original Resident Evil 4 and newcomers who are experiencing the events of RE4 for the first time will explore a horror beyond belief.

We’ll leave you with a few additional screenshots for now, but keep your eyes on the Resident Evil Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for all the latest info on Resident Evil 4, coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 24th, 2023.

Today, we invite you to look back and reflect on your countless journeys as fearless Arisen in a perilous quest to break the eternal cycle that held the land of Gransys captive.

After all, we wouldn’t be here, 10 years later, if you hadn’t taken your first courageous steps against Grigori on the beach of Cassardis!

So to that, we say… Thank you, brave Arisen.

We’re starting our celebration of the Dragon’s Dogma 10th Anniversary today with a new artwork and logo (see above!), and a fancy new website prepared just for this occasion. Update to the Street Fighter V Community License Agreement

May 12, 2022 // Capcom Official

Recently, we published the new Street Fighter V Community License Agreement for both The Americas and EMEA. We acknowledge that we could have handled the situation better.

Our aim was to make the requirements clear and to make approvals for a no-cost license much more expedient. When TOs have contacted the Capcom USA and Capcom Europe teams about running community events with Street Fighter V: Champion Edition in the past, the approval process has been prohibitively longwinded. This is something we are keen to change so TOs have more time to focus on putting on a great event and less time spent on seeking approvals.

We want to thank our passionate fans for the feedback we received after the first version went live. We hear you. Honouring the grassroots tradition of the Street Fighter community is incredibly important to us. To this end, we have updated the Street Fighter V Community License Agreement, taking into account the feedback we received from the community while maintaining our original goal to provide a no-cost license. A summary of the changes is listed below. We have also included a Q&A that we hope makes the rules easier to navigate with further context and insight.

  • Increased prize pool limit from $2,000 to $10,000 per event
  • Removed the yearly $10,000 prize pool limit
  • Increased sponsorship limit from $5,000 to $6,000 per event
  • Increased sponsorship limit from $20,000 to $30,000 per year
  • Changed spectator fee restrictions
  • Changed venue restrictions for bars
  • Removed License Grant-back for video/photo content captured at events

If you plan to host an event which may exceed the scope of the community license (or if you have any questions!), we ask that you please contact esports@capcom.com and we will review your event and license requirements on a one-to-one basis.

To the amazing community of FGC TOs – you are a highly valued part of the Street Fighter ecosystem. You allow less experienced players to both hone their craft and to enjoy fighting games on a multitude of levels. Thank you for being patient with us.

Q: Is Matcherino part of the prize pool or sponsorships?

A: If Matcherino (or another crowd funding platform) is used to fund the prize pool, the funding will be counted toward the prize pool limitations. If you’re unable to cap the prize pool funding and expect to exceed the community license thresholds, contact esports@capcom.com and we will review your event and license requirements on a one-to-one basis.

Q: If I hire a photographer/videographer to capture content for an event, do I need to hand that content over to Capcom?

A: No. That content will be bound by the agreement between you and the talent you hire. There may be times that we see footage from an event that we think would look great on official promotional materials. If that happens, we’ll reach out to you to secure usage permission.

Q: How do I calculate the prizing and sponsorship contributions if my Street Fighter V: Champion Edition tournament is part of a multi-game event?

A: Only the portion of the prize pool that is specifically awarded to participants of the Street Fighter V: Champion Edition portion of your event will count toward the prizing limit.

If the total sponsorship contributions for the whole multi-game event is below $6,000, you can apply for a community license as normal. If it exceeds this limit, contact esports@capcom.com and we will review your event and license requirements on a one-to-one basis.

Q: How much does a commercial esports license cost?

A: If you wish to host esports events which may exceed the scope of the no-cost community license, Capcom will take various factors into consideration in deciding whether to grant a commercial esports license. This includes (but is not limited to) the total prize pool, total sponsorships, brand partnerships, spectator fees and broadcasting platforms. Depending on the scale of the event, the license may require a fee, revenue share, ad space or a combination. Contact esports@capcom.com and we will review your event and license requirements on a one-to-one basis.

Q: So, I can charge spectator fees for my event?

A: Yes, as long as those fees are used to offset event costs.

Q: Why are there sponsorship limits?

A: Capcom understands that TOs need time and resources to run successful community events, and that sponsorship is an effective means to offset event costs. We are happy for events to do this under the community license, and the limits are there to make clear where a smaller-scale community license event ends and a larger-scale esports event requiring a commercial license begins. If your sponsorship exceeds the limit of the community license, please contact esports@capcom.com and we will review your event and license requirements on a one-to-one basis.

Q: Can I stream my event on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook Gaming or other streaming platforms?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I run my event at a bar?

A: For the most part, yes, as long as you do not own the bar/establishment and the event is not sponsored by any prohibited brands – including alcohol brands – outlined in Section IV (d).

Q: I run a weekly event with Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. Does this mean I have to submit my event details and accept the Street Fighter V Community License Agreement every week?

A: For weekly events like this, accepting the community license once per 12-month period is okay. In the “Additional Notes” part of the submission form, let us know the frequency of your event along with “Prize Pool” and “Sponsorship Contributions” estimates for that 12-month period. And if you ever exceed the community license limits, contact esports@capcom.com and we will review your event and license requirements on a one-to-one basis.

Q: Does the Street Fighter V Community License Agreement apply to other games within the Street Fighter series?

A: At this time, the community license agreement only covers the Street Fighter V series, including Street Fighter V (2016), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (2018) and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition (2020).

Q: Is the Street Fighter V Community License Agreement now set in stone or will it change?

A: Capcom will continue to monitor community feedback to make sure the license agreement is functioning as intended and not hindering TOs from running community events.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Digital Event May 2022 Recap

May 10, 2022 // Yuri Araujo

More monsters, more action and more features were revealed in today’s Digital Event. Here’s a recap of the main announcements:

With Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak just over the horizon, more threats to Elgado and the Kingdom start to reveal themselves. Thankful, new hunting techniques and allies will aid you in your journey.

By the way, today’s Digital Event was presented by game director Yoshitake Suzuki so if you want to catch the full presentation in video form, you can watch the archive below. Otherwise, keep on reading for the text recap.

More Monsters

Steel yourselves for a dance of a thousand blades with Seregios. This Flying Wyvern can detach and send razor-sharp scales flying in the direction of its prey… afflicting them with the Bleeding status ailment for a painful death of a thousand cuts.

Bundle up and stay frosty when you face the Aurora Somnacanth, a subspecies that evolved to conjure up chilling breaths and take control of ice.

Magma Almudron trades its signature mud manipulation tricks for molten lava. As usual, keep maximum awareness of your surroundings if you want to survive this hunt.

The Guild is also now able to share more insight on the mystery of Malzeno. Some of its power is derived from the malicious Bloodblight it can inflict on its enemies. Hunters, take extra caution when facing this Elder Dragon and don’t let it bleed you dry…

More Action

With new monsters and subspecies looming on the horizon and returning monsters displaying a more varied set of attacks and tricks, you’ll need to be ready for every possible situation. Introducing the new Switch Skill Swap technique.

In Sunbreak, you’ll be able to assign individual Switch Skills to two groups: Red Swap Scroll and Blue Swap Scroll. This will allow you employ a wider variety of attacks and abilities during your hunts. This will be very handy when hunting multiple monsters in one quest, or if you want to try out a new Switch Skill without giving up an old favorite in the same slot.

For example, when playing Sword & Shield, you would normally have to choose between “Windmill” and “Metsu Shoryugeki”. Now you’ll able to assign “Windmill” to one of the Swap Scrolls and use for safely dispatching a pack of Boggi, then quickly swap to “Metsu Shoryugeki” to counter-attack one of Garangolm’s jump attacks.

Speaking of weapon combat, we’ll be showing off some examples and new tricks you can pull off with each of the 14 weapon types starting next week on May 16th. So make sure you’re following the @MonsterHunter social channels and subscribed to the Monster Hunter YouTube channel to be among the first to see what’s coming up.

More Features

In your journey through Sunbreak, you are not alone!

In addition to the standard selection of single player and multiplayer quests, we’re introducing Follower Quests. This curated selection of quests lets you take on some fearsome monsters with a bit of extra help: familiar faces from Kamura Village and Elgado Outpost.

We’ve already had Hinoa and Minoto join us briefly during Rampage Quests, and we’ve been seeing Dame Fiorayne show off her Sword & Shield skills throughout various teasers… but with Follower Quests, we’ll be able to see them in action throughout an entire hunt! Other characters will be able to join you as well, but we’re keeping the final list under wraps for now.

Pre-order Capcom Fighting Collection Now!

Apr 11, 2022 // Andy Wong

Calling all gem-crashing fans, moonlight-loving night warriors, and full metal fighters! Capcom Fighting Collection launches on June 24, and is now available for pre-order on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC!

(Quick note: PlayStation 4 pre-orders are only available for physical copies. The game will be available digitally on all platforms at launch.)

For those of you who weren’t already set to put your quarter on the machine, Capcom Fighting Collection features ten different fighting games straight from the arcade, including two Darkstalkers games never before released outside of Japan. Each game also supports online play with rollback netcode, making it easy to put your skills to the test and prove you’re the best around.

Pre-ordering will also get you a combo of bonuses, including 18 music remixes by artists including CAP-JAMS, Knxwledge, Mndsgn, KEIZOmachine!, Olive Oil, and Matt Cab. Plus, exclusive new illustrations by Yuri Kataiwa, SAKUTAMO, Ryuji Higurashi, Tamio, and Chisato Mita are included, featuring various characters from each game in the collection in each artist’s trademark style!

We’ve got more information on all ten games included in Capcom Fighting Collection here. Today, we’re talking about two absolute gems in this collection. It’s all fun and games until someone gets an 8-chain. Puzzled by that one? Well, let’s get you up to speed with…

SUPER PUZZLE FIGHTER II TURBO (1996)

For many, this game needs no introduction, but for those who aren’t familiar, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo takes familiar faces from Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and a few other Capcom fighting games, and smashes them together in… a puzzle game!

Instead of directly attacking your opponent, you’re dropping gems on a board in an attempt to crush your opponent. When a Crash Gem appears, matching it to the same color will smash all the connected gems of that color as an attack, complete with your chibi-fied character unleashing their own unique moves to match. In classic puzzle game style, the person whose stack reaches the top of the screen will lose the round… and in classic fighting game style, whoever wins two bouts first wins the match! It’s brains over brawn in this one, so you’ll need to carefully position individual gem drops to create even larger gems, use cascading Crash Gems to trigger combos, and send plenty of Counter Gems over to your opponent before they have a chance to retaliate!

Each character has their own pattern of Counter Gems that they send to an opponent, so picking the right character for your strategy is key. Playing against the CPU will also display unique – and typically outlandish – story introductions and endings for each character. Where will Ken’s quest for fortune and fame lead him? Can Felicia make it to the Broadway stage? Will Ryu find the answer in the heart of (puzzle) battle? There’s only one way to find out!

Legend has it that a certain master of Saikyo-style is playable, too, though picking him as your character might have you seeing red.

SUPER GEM FIGHTER MINI MIX (1997)

Love the chibi aesthetic of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, but miss the fighting? You can get the best of both worlds thanks to Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix! Featuring a roster of miniaturized characters returning from Puzzle Fighter as well as a few newcomers, Gem Fighter is a total mix-up of fighting game flair and absurd additions to everything you think you know about head-to-head gameplay.

In traditional fighting game style, you’ll have access to a punch button, a kick button, and a variety of special moves… but that’s where the similarities end. Combos can be executed with a single button or a mix of punches and kicks, allowing you to string together attacks while your character goes through a wild variety of animations and even costume changes!

Each attack that connects with an opponent also sends gems flying around the screen. Picking up gems will power up your special abilities and can have unique effects on moves as well, such as transforming Ryu’s shoryuken into a stunning electric uppercut. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for health-restoring items, orbs you can toss at opponents, and all sorts of Capcom references in character animations, KOs, background elements, and more. With gems flying everywhere, items that can turn a match around, and moves that power up over the course of a match, it’s a game that fighters of all skill levels can enjoy!

Get in on even more arcade action with Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium when it drops on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC later this year! Featuring a variety of old-school classics from the arcade heyday, SonSon, one of Capcom’s earliest games, will be available as a free download when 2nd Stadium launches later this year. Plus, pre-orders and early purchases of Capcom Fighting Collection will get you access to Three Wonders as a bonus game in Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium at launch.

That’s all for now, but if you’re ready to put that quarter on the machine with an “I got next,” be sure to pre-order Capcom Fighting Collection so you’re ready to crush it on June 24th when the 10-game collection drops on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC!
