Localizing Across Cultures with Context — For Your Very Careful Consideration

Nov 11, 2017 // Janet Hsu

Hello again! This is Janet Hsu, back with another blog! Now, I know I talked before about Trucy’s Magic Panties , and also mentioned that Klavier is not actually German , but today I’d like to share with you a little more about the thought processes that went into the localization choices we made when creating Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Apollo’s first name was chosen as a way to rival Phoenix’s name. Seeing as a phoenix is a famous mythical creature with a strong presence, we felt that Apollo’s name had to be something equally as powerful. Among the other names we had initially considered were Arthur (for the King Arthur connection) and Justin (a play on “justice”).

As for his last name, “Justice” was actually at the top of the list, but two of the other names we initially threw around were Swift (like the bird, and also to imply that justice is swift) and Startel (as a parallel to his Japanese name, which phonetically sounds the same as the word for “surprise”).

–  Ema’s favorite snacks were originally translated simply as “chips,” but when I went to discuss how we were going to localize the graphics for them with the dev team, it turned out that they wanted to keep the snack’s original shape and color for the localized version, too. (I had originally suggested making them orange like cheese curls, since most American snacks of that shape are some shade of neon orange, not brown.) So, I decided it would be better to change the name of the snacks themselves and explain how the product tastes throughout the game instead. Thus, the “Snackoos” brand of chocolate snacks was born. In the Japanese version, they are a ubiquitous snack food known as karintou

–  The localization of the Eldoon’s Noodle cart was a little difficult to pull off back in the DS version because the curtain that spelled out “Eldoon’s Noodles” around the cart has 6 panels on each side, while the Japanese version ã‚„ãŸã¶ãã‚„ (Yatabukiya) only had 5. Unlike other pieces of evidence up until then, we couldn’t simply redraw the background and consider the job done. We had to re-make that part of the model for the piece of evidence you pick up, which was no easy task back in the day. In fact, there was some debate as to whether Eldoon’s Noodle should be named Nemar’s Ramen instead in order to preserve the 5 letters limit, which brings me to my next point.

If you take a look at the vertical flag on the right-hand side of the background, there’s a picture of Mr. Salty slurping up some salty noodles on it. In the Japanese version, the Japanese characters for ramen (ラーメン) were simply written vertically on it, but for the sake of the localization, we had to consider a couple of factors before we could decide on the final design.

The first consideration was how well known ramen was back in the day. Remember, this was 10 years ago (for context, check out  this article ), and while you may think everyone knows what a proper bowl of ramen is now, this is what people thought of when you said “ramen” back then:

Ah, college, when 10 cents was all you needed for a meal.

As opposed to actual, fresh ramen noodles like these:

Ah, real life, where 10 dollars will barely get you a meal.

And since in the game, we didn’t actually show what a bowl of salty noodles looked like, we didn’t want to give people the wrong impression that it was some super low-class junk food when it was actually supposed to be a rich soup noodle. (True story: when I first moved to Japan in 2002, I couldn’t believe how different real ramen was from what I had eaten in America. The biggest differences were of course the broth, but also the quality of the noodles themselves. It was like eating Italian pasta — they had chew! And elasticity! And flavor! It absolutely blew my naïve little mind.)

The second consideration was how quickly a player could identify what this thing on wheels was. To a Japanese player, this cart’s design is instantly recognizable since the vertical flag clearly says “ramen” on it, and because the cart is something a Japanese person would have seen before in their everyday life. There would be no need to explain what it is, which is why there was no place built into the story to really explain anything so basic about it. However, for the localized version, we thought that it was going to be a little bit tougher for the average player to recognize what it is since not even gourmet food trucks as we know them today existed back in 2007! (They mostly started springing up in 2008 and beyond.) Had there been food trucks, then it might have been slightly easier for players to make the jump on their own.

The third consideration was whether what we went with would affect the gameplay and / or the story. If you’ve played Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney before, then you probably know what I’m talking about here….

So, between these three major factors, we decided that it would be best to convey what this stand was all about through clear iconography instead of simply writing “Ramen” or “Noodles” on the flag vertically, and to name the cart’s dear owner “Guy Eldoon.”

–  Speaking of graphical changes, in resizing the graphics, I had to make a number of additional localization changes to the backgrounds in order to bring them in line with the translated text.

A lot of the things that were touched up were tiny little things that you may not even notice, but it was important to me that if you looked really carefully, you would see that things like the name of the Gavinner’s tour on the billboard matched with what the in-game characters say it says.

Another example of something that wasn’t quite so visible in the Nintendo DS version that became more visible is the bowl sitting in the middle of this table. In the original Japanese, it was a pork cutlet bowl, or katsudon as any fan of “ Yuri!!! on Ice ” will tell you, but the English had been translated as a bowl of stew, so I asked the team to make this look more like a bowl of stew instead.

The reason as to why it’s a pork cutlet bowl to begin with in the Japanese version has to do with Japanese pop culture. As it says in the Wikipedia article:

“[Katsudon] is also a famous gag of Japanese police films: many people think that suspects will speak the truth with tears when they have eaten katsudon and are asked, ’Did you ever think about how your mother feels about this?’ Even nowadays, the gag of ’We must eat katsudon while interrogating’ is popular in Japanese films.

I’ll leave you to play the game yourself to see how this is riffed on in-game!

–  Finally, as for prosecutor Klavier Gavin and his German lingo, there were definitely a few considerations we had to take into account when deciding his “character voice”.

The first thing was the fact that he tended to use English words in his lines. For example, the Japanese line of the screenshot above has him literally saying the English word “okay” (オーケイï¼ã€€ä»Šæ—¥ã¯ã€ã“ã‚“ãªæ„Ÿã˜ã§è¡Œã£ã¦ã¿ã‚ˆã†ã‹ï¼). This is a pretty common thing that people do in the Japanese entertainment industry, and pretty much Japanese society at large. Similar to how English speakers think that Japanese kanji are cool (to the point that some people get kanji tattoos), Japanese people find that foreign languages like English and French look and sound cool to their eyes and ears, which leads to a lot of English text only existing on a product to serve as “decorative lettering”.

This is why every time I see English text in a game I’m working on, I always ask myself: What purpose does this English text serve in the Japanese version? If the text is simply “decorative” then the words that were chosen are usually words that Japanese people simply find cool but that don’t have a whole lot of deeper meaning to them. If the English is meant to show some degree of “foreignness,” the words that were used will tend to be simple ones that any Japanese player will understand, regardless of whether or not the text sounds natural to a native English speaker. That’s why you see so many instances of what may seem to be perfectly “acceptable” yet “simple” English get changed into something more suitable for the intended audience when it is localized.

In Klavier’s case, his Japanese characterization is molded after a traditional J-rocker archetype, and as such, his speech is peppered with random English words and phrases as a way to elevate his coolness factor. This meant that in trying to come up with something that would convey a similar feel, we had to make him sound cool with a hint of foreignness in the English version. The answer we came up with was German rock. Bands like Rammstein and Tokio Hotel were in during the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, and the German rock scene was very active and producing all sorts of new genres at this time. It’s not too much of a stretch to think that just maybe Klavier was inspired by these amazing bands of the era.

———————–

There are so many other stories I want to share, but I’m afraid a lot of them would get super spoilertastic, so I’ll have to leave it here for today. But I hope this has given you a little more insight into how much thought goes into each localization decision, big or small.

Next week, I’ll be back with more stories, this time from the dev team! If we’re lucky and Mr. Takumi has the time, we might even get to hear some stories straight from the scenario writer’s mouth!

Until then!

Character Tutorials for Black Panther, Sigma, and Monster Hunter for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Nov 07, 2017 // Andy Wong

Black Panther, Sigma, and Monster Hunter have joined the epic clash and are now available in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite! Just as we did with the 30 characters at launch, we created character tutorial videos to help you get accustomed to these exciting additions to the roster.

Black Panther – The king of Valkanda is for the technically adept as his combo potential requires swift cancelling into his Wall Cling. Always be aware of your positioning as an ill-timed cancel will leave Black Panther vulnerable. Choosing the Reality Stone allows T’Challa access to a projectile, which gives him cover before pouncing on the opponent.

Sigma – A master at covering all angles of the screen safely, Sigma is definitely for those who value creativity in a character. Pair him with a high-damage teammate who can take advantage of his ability to open up his opponent in unique ways. Using the Power Stone improves Sigma’s relentless assault by introducing a quick attack leading into a wall bounce.

Monster Hunter – True to the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter is for players who have the utmost confidence in their predictive abilities as her great sword can be unforgiving to use. If you can master the great sword’s large but unwieldy hitbox along with the infinite armor it provides, you’ll find she is one of the heaviest hitters in the game. The Soul Stone is a great way for her to recover health to make up for her limited defensive options.

Black Panther, Sigma, and Monster Hunter are all available with the 2017 Character Pass or can be purchased individually – both options contain their respective Premium Costumes. We’re looking forward to the tech everyone will undoubtedly find and share with these high-skill characters!

We’re still diligently working on Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Venom, who we can’t wait to show off soon! As always, follow our  Twitter  and like us on  Facebook  to stay up to date on Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite .

Trucy and Apollo’s Excellent Adventure: New Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Features!

Nov 05, 2017 // Janet Hsu

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first of four blog entries I’ll be doing for the upcoming release of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney for the Nintendo 3DS on November 21 st in North America, and November 23 rd in Europe! This is Janet Hsu, coming at you from Osaka, Japan!

I realize that a lot of new folk have been joining our ever-growing community, and this may be the first time they’re playing AJ:AA , so I’m going to try to remain as spoiler-free as possible.

Now, I know it seems like we just had the smartphone releases of AJ:AA , but I wanted to share with you today some of the nifty things we’ve done to modernize and streamline the gameplay for this Nintendo 3DS version. Many of the new features are similar to the ones we implemented in the more recent titles like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, so hopefully, they will make your experience go a little smoother.

And now, without further ado, here are Trucy and Apollo who will take us on a tour of all the new features!

—-

Apollo: APOLLO JUSTICE IS FINE!!!

Trucy: Polly! I think you just scared our poor audience…

Apollo: Whoops. Sorry about that! I was just warming up my voice with some Chords of Steel exercises. Anyway, I’m Apollo Justice, and today, Trucy and I will be taking you on a tour of the newest version of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney .

Trucy: Here’s a fun fact for you, Polly: did you know that it’s been almost ten years since our debut on Nintendo DS?

Apollo: Wow. A lot sure has change in ten years, huh.

Trucy: You said it! Games have gotten so much more user-friendly, and the Nintendo 3DS system even has features and functions that didn’t exist on Nintendo DS.

Apollo: Right. You all ready to get started on our tour?

Trucy: Ooh, you bet!

Trucy: Here we are at the title screen.

Apollo: It looks just like the original version to me.

Trucy: Looks like somebody isn’t very observant. “You can get away with being unobservant some of the time, but you should definitely call a step-ladder a step-ladder all of the time.” That’s what Daddy always says.

Apollo: (That’s an oddly specific object to reference…)

Trucy: And in this case, there are definitely two shiny new buttons here: the “Japanese” and the “Skip All Text” buttons!

Apollo: Let me guess: the “Japanese” button takes you to the Japanese version of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, also known as Gyakuten Saiban 4, and the “Skip All Text” button allows you to fast-forward through pretty much all of the dialogue from the very start with the B Button?

Trucy: *gasp!* How did you know?! Did you take a sneak peek at the game without me, Polly!

Apollo: N-No! It’s just — they’re kinda self-explanatory?

Trucy: Yeah, I guess so. But I bet you didn’t know this: Even if the skip text feature is set to “off”, the game will automatically keep on going to the next piece of dialogue as long as you hold the A Button down!

Apollo: Huh. Why do all the hard work of pressing a button when a heavy book can do it for you, right?

Trucy: Polly! Is that any way to experience such an interactive medium as games?

Apollo: Hey, I’m not the one who put this autoplay feature in! …Look, let’s just move on to the courtroom now, all right?

Trucy: Wow, Polly! Listen to that crystal clear, uncompressed music, and look at how smooth you look! No more jaggy lines! Other than your horns, I mean.

Apollo: Hey, you leave my hair out of this. Do you have any idea how early I get up every day just to get it to look this good?

Trucy: No… but I heard that the localization director was unreasonably harsh on the dev team and asked them to change a bunch of graphics just for this remaster.

Apollo: Now, now, let’s not start rumors. I’m sure she was just trying to make sure that things matched up properly now that things that weren’t visible on a Nintendo DS screen suddenly are.

Trucy: Hmm… maybe. I guess they didn’t think that someday, screen resolutions would get better.

Apollo: Somehow, I doubt they were that shortsighted… though I am willing to believe that they never imagined the day would come when they’d have to re-master the game in 3D.

Hint: the larger this pic is on your screen, the farther back you have to be from it to see it in 3D. It’s easiest to do this on a cell phone.

Trucy: …I’m not sure how that picture’s going to help convey your point, Polly.

Apollo: Look, all you have to do is stare through the center of it like you do with those Magic Eye things and a 3D version will pop out at you from the middle.

Trucy: You mean you want me to make my eyes bug out — like when you Perceive your opponents?

Apollo: They’re witnesses, Trucy, and no — I mean, yes, my eyes do do that when I Perceive, but that’s not what I’m asking you to do…

Trucy: I wonder if this is what Daddy means when he says, “A good lawyer will always find a way to make themself stand out from the crowd?”

Apollo: Ugh… And who exactly is your father again?

Trucy: A magician never reveals her secrets, so you’ll just have to play to find out for yourself!

Apollo: I should’ve seen that coming.

Trucy: Speaking of seeing things, I’ve been staring at that pic, but it’s a lot harder to pull off than you made it sound…

Apollo: That’s why you’re really supposed to experience it on a Nintendo 3DS… But there’s at least one thing I know for sure: it looks like it’s never been easier to solve a case in court. Not only will I never have to wonder where in a testimony I am anymore, I’ll also know when I’ve reached the last statement.

Trucy: *gasp* You mean, you don’t enjoy our witty after-testimony banter?

Apollo: Of course I do! …Just, not every single time I flip too quickly through a witness’s testimony.

Trucy: Oh! It looks like there’s a handy-dandy Save button on the touch screen now, too! Let’s try it out!

Apollo: I sense that I’ll be seeing a lot of this screen in the near future…

Trucy: Better than the game over screen, though, right? Although, it looks like they added a nifty Retry button — just in case you didn’t save.

Trucy: Daddy said that since you’re just a rookie, you’ll probably make a ton of mistakes. In fact, as I left the house this morning, he said, “Tell him he’d better get used to the sight of a set of courtroom doors slamming in his face.”

Apollo: …Your daddy is beginning to sound like a real jerk.

Trucy: I never knew you were so judgmental, Polly! He was just being realistic.

Apollo: Heh, maybe you’re the one who needs to play the game to learn more about me . Anyway, I think that about covers everyth–

???: Ahem. How dare you leave out the most important new features!

Apollo: E-Ema! What are you doing here?!

Ema: Picking up the slack, apparently, since you can’t be bothered to cover the best features yourself.

Trucy: But I thought we got them all…?

Ema: Not quite. Now, strap on your splash goggles and let’s go through the last two, scientifically!

Ema: You know how you could only use the touch screen to rotate the evidence before? Well, now you can also use the Circle Pad, too! It’s perfect for when you don’t want to sully the evidence with your fingerprints!

Ema: And when you do want to investigate for fingerprints, you don’t have to keep blowing into the mic anymore — you can simply press the A Button to blow any excess fingerprinting powder away. Neat, huh!

Apollo: …Wait, that’s it?

Ema: What do you mean “that’s it”?! It’s a big deal to be able to handle your evidence as your situation demands! Not everyone can blow off excess dust in public with confidence like me, you know.

Apollo: If you say so…

Apollo: Maybe now’s a good time to make a break for it, Trucy…

*Apollo and Trucy quietly slip away from the stress-snacking detective*

Apollo: Talk about a close call.

Trucy: Yeah, but now I think we’ve finally covered everything!

Apollo: Yup. That about does it for us today. Hope you enjoyed this tour, and maybe we’ll see you around again!

Trucy: And in the game, even!

—–

Thanks, guys! (And thanks, Ema!) I knew I could count on you to keep things lively!

And there you have it — all of the new features we’ve added to this version.

Next week, I’ll be back with tales from the localization trenches! It may have been ten years since we made the original version, but I still remember all of the decisions and debates we had back then.

Until then!

Capcom Pro Tour Content FAQ
Like last year, we know many of you will have questions about this content. We want to be as clear and transparent as possible about the purpose of this initiative. Please review the FAQ below or shoot us a Tweet @CapcomFighters if what’s on your mind is not covered below!

What percentage of the Capcom Pro Tour DLC revenue is going to the Capcom Cup 2017 prize pool?

A minimum of 30% of the revenue will go to the Capcom Cup 2017 prize pool, and an additional 50% of the revenue is invested into Capcom Pro Tour production. That means that Capcom contributes more than 80% of all CPT DLC revenue directly to support Capcom Pro Tour initiatives.

We’ll be providing ongoing updates throughout the year, so you’ll know how close we are to reaching our goal.

Also, remember that we contribute a portion of our sponsorship, ad revenue, and merchandise sales into the Capcom Pro Tour and Capcom Cup prize pool as well.

How long will the content be available?
We plan on taking this content off of the marketplace on November 29, before Capcom Cup 2017. This is the cut-off point so that we can tally up to revenue that will go directly into the prize pool.

Monster Hunter: World Beta, Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration and New Trailer revealed

Oct 30, 2017 // Yuri Araujo

Straight from Paris Games Week 2017, we’re excited to reveal the deathly Rotten Vale ecosystem, an online Beta and stunning Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration gear!

The Rotten Vale is home to vulturous monsters that prey on one another and are not afraid of hiding bone piles and decaying carcasses. It’s an extremely dangerous part of this new world, and one you do not want to venture into by yourself.

But before you get to the Rotten Vale, your journey through the new world actually starts at the Ancient Forest. So if you’ve been itching to get your hands on Monster Hunter: World and want to begin scoping out the place before the game hits the shelves next year, we have the perfect opportunity for you: an online Beta!

The  Monster Hunter: World online Beta will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4 starting December 9 th , 2017 and will be open only to PS Plus users worldwide.

Designed specifically to give you a taste of the thrill of the hunt, this online Beta will offer you three total quests across the Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste. The target monsters will be the gluttonous Great Jagras, the headstrong Barroth and the fearsome Anjanath, but I highly recommend you keep your eyes wide open for other dangerous monsters looking to claim their territory in each ecosystem. All 14 weapon types will be available for you to choose, but make sure to study your surroundings and use your environment to gain the upper hand.

We are also very proud to announce a special collaboration with Guerrilla games to bring you gear themed after the expert huntress Aloy, along with sophisticated machine-inspired Felyne gear, from Horizon Zero Dawn .

This special collaboration will be available for free and only on PS4, but you’ll have to prove your worth by completing a unique Event Quest and gathering the required resources. More details to come at a later date.

Monster Hunter: World will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 26 th , 2018, and you can already pre-order your copy and secure the nostalgic Origin Set armor and other neat bonuses; more details here. Can’t wait to hunt online with you in the Beta later this year!
