The Importance of RE Code: Veronica, RE Remake, & RE 0

May 16, 2016 // Tim

The 20th Anniversary of Resident Evil continues this year with part two of my retrospective looking back at the core titles in the franchise. Last time I reflected on the first three classics , and for this second entry I’m examining the other half of the classic formula RE games.

The following three Resident Evil games are all very important entries in the series for their own reasons. RE Code: Veronica introduced players to a fully rendered 3D environment, the RE (Remake) reinvented the terror of the original game to become its own masterpiece, and RE 0 offered more backstory to the infamous Mansion Incident that started it all. Learn more about them below, along with how they impacted my lifelong RE fandom.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Year: 2000
Platforms: Dreamcast (Launch), PlayStation 2, GameCube, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Capcom’s survival horror franchise jumped into the next generation of consoles as Claire Redfield infiltrated a Paris Umbrella facility while continuing her search for Chris. The Resident Evil series became known for its jaw-dropping CG cutscenes, and Claire’s explosive European excursion raised the bar. The Dreamcast title was also the first and only in the series to replace its traditionally static backgrounds with fully rendered 3D environments, allowing for more dynamic camerawork. Claire’s eventual reunion with Chris was riddled with challenging, memorable moments. No survivor will forget their first encounter with the stowaway Tyrant and spending every last piece of ammo to defeat it.

Tim’s Take: The return of Claire Redfield was the sole reason I begged for a Dreamcast for Christmas in ’99. To this day Code: Veronica represents what I consider perhaps the most challenging classic RE game. I have vivid memories of barely limping past poisonous Hunters with my health in the red, palms sweating from anticipation. Speaking of your health EKG meter, the screen on the Dreamcast’s Virtual Memory Unit (VMU) offered a novel way to keep track of your status. To me, both chapters of the Redfield family reunion – the prison on Rockfort Island and Umbrella’s Antarctic Base – are equally demanding and unforgettable events in RE history.

Resident Evil (Remake)
Year: 2002
Platforms: GameCube (Launch), Wii, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

The original Resident Evil was already considered a classic by 2002, but that didn’t stop Capcom from completely remaking it with improved gameplay and stunning new visuals. The Resident Evil remake faithfully retold the S.T.A.R.S. team’s tragic stay in the Spencer Mansion while introducing players to expansive new areas and scares that toyed with expectations based on the original. The most exciting change involved zombies that, if not destroyed with a headshot or methodically incinerated, would return as faster and deadly Crimson Heads. The Resident Evil remake is still considered one of the greatest horror games of all time, and its legacy continued with last year’s HD remaster featuring modernized controls and a Very Easy Mode that allowed newcomers to test their courage.

Tim’s Take: The Resident Evil remake is not only my favorite Resident Evil game, but my favorite horror game of all time. The graphical leap this title made in only one generation is still mind-boggling, made even more impressive with the recent HD remaster. I’ll never forget walking through the East Wing corridor from the Main Hall, expecting a cerberus to crash through the window, but only to see a glass pane subtly crack. From that moment on I knew that this remake’s mission was not only to refine the 1996 original, but to also use my knowledge of the original against me.

Resident Evil 0
Year: 2002
Platforms: GameCube (Launch), Wii, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Before the Spencer Mansion incident, the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team’s helicopter crash-landed in the forests of Raccoon City. S.T.A.R.S. medic Rebecca Chambers’ story of survival took a surprising turn before she reunited with her team members in the mansion. This prequel recounted Rebecca and mysterious fugitive Billy Coen’s adventures aboard a runaway train teeming with zombies, a decrepit Umbrella Training Facility, and connected with memorable locations from Resident Evil 2. Switching between and controlling both Rebecca and Billy throughout Resident Evil 0 was a rewarding trial, and one we were happy to relive with this year’s HD remaster. The RE 0 remaster came along with the same modernized benefits as the Resident Evil remake, as well as Wesker Mode, which empowered players with potent Prototype Virus powers like super speed and red eyes that unleash powerful energy.

Tim’s Take: I remember daydreaming about what it would be like to venture back out into the Arklay Forest and further investigate what happened to the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team after they crash-landed. Those dreams were answered when Resident Evil 0 released and let me discover the fated Raccoon Police Department (RPD) squad’s tale before the infamous Spencer Mansion incident. I enjoyed being able to set and forget items without the time-and-space-defying item boxes, and managing both Billy and Rebecca was a unique challenge. One of my favorite segments of RE 0 involves venturing into the factory location from RE 2 and seeing what those memorable areas looked like with improved visuals. This only adds more fuel for the flames of my excitement around the confirmed Resident Evil 2 remake.

Next time we’ll look at the rest of the core Resident Evil games as the franchise evolved in new directions and offered players unprecedented new ways to control the action. Also be sure to check out the RE 20th Anniversary developer video interviews with the director of RE 0, Koji Oda , and longtime RE producer, Masachika Kawata .

Support troops around the world with 8-Bit Salute’s Military Appreciation Month

May 13, 2016 // Kellen Haney

Over the years, Operation Supply Drop has raised over $8,500,000 supporting over 50,000 veterans across the US, NATO, and ANZAC. These games and consoles will go to some of the people who need them most – it goes without saying that a soldier’s life is stressful, and the escape and relief that video games provide can be a true bastion for those on the front lines, those recovering in hospitals, and all those serving far from home. While in previous years, 8-Bit Salute has run weekend marathons, they’re doing something a bit different this year – the entire month of May is dedicated to their cause with 8-Bit Salute: Military Appreciation Month! They’re looking to raise $100,000 for their noble cause over the course of May, and you can help via the 8-Bit Salute charity page – direct donations are always an option, and you can also campaign for them by setting your own streaming and donation goals or even creating your own team to help support the cause! If you aren’t able to donate but would still like to support them on social sites, make sure to use the #8BitSalute tag to get awareness out there.

Thanks for your support, and happy gaming!

RE 20th Anniversary Video – Masachika Kawata Talks Co-op & Handheld Development

May 04, 2016 // Tim

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Resident Evil, and few are feeling the milestone as deeply as Capcom’s development team. Our series of developer interview videos continues this week with longtime Resident Evil producer Masachika Kawata discussing key evolutions in the series over the decades.

Kawata-san has been involved in the creation of pivotal entries like RE 4, RE 5, RE Revelations, and fun spin-offs like RE: The Umbrella Chronicles. In this video Kawata-san draws on his experience to discuss how the implementation of co-op play changed the series, and the motivational challenge of creating RE Revelations initially for 3DS.

Catch up on the other developer interviews reflecting on the 20th Anniversary of Resident Evil by watching Koji Oda discuss Resident Evil 0  and Hiroyuki Kobayashi talk about the series as a whole .

SFV: Guile Release and April Update Details

Apr 27, 2016 // Harrison Young

Guile, one of the most iconic characters in franchise history, is reporting for duty in Street Fighter V starting tomorrow at 7PM PT! He retains his classic fighting style that allows him to keep his opponents at bay with Sonic Booms and Somersault Kicks while adding a handful of new weapons to his arsenal through the Variable System.

Other big ticket items such as the Air Force Base and the introduction of our “Rage Quit” penalty system are also part of this April update.  Hit the jump for the full rundown.

Just like Alex, Guile will be available for FREE to all players until the in-game shop that uses real currency is launched.  Once the shop launches, the free trial period for these characters will end and players will have to use Fight Money or real currency to purchase them.

Joining Guile’s release is the first new stage to be added to Street Fighter V post launch. Guile’s Air Force Base returns with a shiny new jet, a next-gen boom box and some familiar background characters that fans may recognize from their Street Fighter II days. This stage is available beginning today in the In-Game Shop for 70,000 Fight Money. Season Pass holders will receive this stage for free as a thank you for their continued support of Street Fighter V .

Also included in this Street Fighter V update is the first implementation of a system to punish players who frequently disconnect during matches (aka ‘rage quitters’). The system will continue to be refined over time and more enhancements will be implemented in the future. Additionally, a number of improvements to the matchmaking system have been made, which speeds up the time it takes to find an opponent and simplifies the process of creating and connecting to Battle Lounges.

Lastly, there are a few bug fixes involving certain moves and scenarios that have not been behaving as intended. These have been fixed in the April update.

Ryu/M. Bison/Vega(no claw)

Bug: After dishing out Ryu & Vega’s (no claw) C. LP or M. Bisions C. LK, while doing a light attack rapid cancel at the absolite latest timing possible, if you input another action (V-Skill, Special Move, etc.) at the same time, if the opponent does an attack the “other action” will come out, and when the opponent does nothing, the rapid cancel attack will come out, creating a special option select.

Fix: Made the rapid cancel timing  of said moves 1F shorter.

Ryu

Bug: In the guard animation branch of  Ryu’s C. HK, there was a counter box that was present up to the 13th frame. Therefore, during this time it was possible to eat counter damage.

Fix: Adjusted the counter box on Ryu’s C. HK so that it is no longer present afterter the hitbox is not longer active.

Ken

Bug: In Ken’s C. LP (including rapid cancels), for the 3 frames that it takes for the hitbox to become active, there wasn’t a crouching state set to the move. This allowed moves that are only intended to hit standing opponents to hit Ken.

Fix: Adjusted the first 3 frames of Ken’s C. LP (including rapid cancels) so that Ken is in crouching state.

Bug: In Ken’s M. Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, the feint box that causes the opponent to go into a guarding standby state was not functioning correctly. The V-Trigger M. Tatsumaki Senpukyaku also caused the same phenomenon.

Fix: Corrected the feint box on Ken’s M. Tatsumaki Senpukyaku so that it functions correctly, forcing the opponent to guard when used from a certain distance.

Bug: When a portion of Ken’s EX Shoryuken (V-Trigger ver. included) hits as a ground counter hit, the hit real animation of the opponent continues when knocked into the air, which is an unnatural behavior.

Fix: Adjusted that specific portion of the EX Shoryuken (V-Trigger ver. included) so that when it hits as grounded counter hit, the correct knock up mottion occurs.

Chun-Li

Bug: In Chun-Li’s EX Hyakuretsukyaku, after the moves has completely ended (freeze state finished), she was unable to perform mobility actions (move forward/back or jump).

Fix: Adjusted EX Hyakuretsukyaku so that she is moveable after the move has completely ended.

Bug: In Chun-Li’s J. MP, she can follow up with Yosokyaku to EX Airborne Hyakuretsukyaku on counter hit.

(There is an unintentional difference between the number of continuous airborne hit limiter values between when this hits as a normal and and when it hits as a counter hit)

Fix: Adjusted  the juggle potential of Chun-Li’s J. MP so that it is the same whether or not it is a normal hit or a counter hit.

Cammy

Bug: Cammy’s S. HK’s hit box is no longer active, she was throw invincible.

Fix: Added a throw box to Cammy’s S. HK & Lift Combination while the move is active.

Bug: While Cammy’s EX Razer Edge Slicer is active, she was throw invincible.

Fix: Added a throw box to Cammy’s EX Razer Edge Slicer while it is active.

Dhalsim

Bug: During C. MK, Dhalsim was throw invincible.

Fix: Added a throw box to Dhalsim’s C. MK.

Karin

Bug: When the fourth hit of Karin’s EX Mujinkyaku hits an airborne opponent, the opponent’s float is differed from when it is a normal hit and when it is a counter hit.

Fix: Made it so that the 4th hit of EX Mujinkyaku would cause the same float on counter hit as it does on normal hit.

Bug: There were 2 bugs in Karin’s EX Ressenha.

â‘ When the second hit hits as a counter hit, the opponents Critical Gauge increase would be “0”
â‘¡On counter hit, EX Ressenha’s starting juggle potential would be “0” for each hit.

Fix: Adjusted EX Ressenha on counter so that the opponent’s gauge increase and starting juggle potential are the same as when it is a normal hit.

Laura

Bug: Under specific circumstances, how S. MP hits changes from when on the right corner or on the left corner.

Fix: Expanded S. MP’s hit box downward so that the move yields the same results in both corners.

Necalli

Bug: When rapid canceling Necalli’s C. LP during V-Trigger, the advantage after hit would be plus 1F more than the normal version.

Fix: Unified Necalli’s V-Trigger C. LP to the normal version.

M. Bison

Bug: When throwing an oponent with Psycho Fall, depending on M. Bison’s position and the side he is facing, the distance the opponent is thrown greatly changes, which was unintended.

Fix: Adjusted the behavior of Pyscho Fall so that the distance the opponent is thrown is fixed.

Bug: When M. Bison takes damage in the middle of performing and EX Double Knee press, the opposing character’s behavior would be irregular after the hit.

Fix: Changed the behavior after hit on the EX Double Knee Press.

R. Mika

Bug: In R. Mika’s C. HK, there wasn’t a throw box in place.. Even though the move is visually performed on the ground, it was throw invincible.

Fix: Added a throw box to R. Mika’s C. HK while the move is active.

Alex

Bug: The the time frame of the stop theatrics applied to an opponent hit by Sledge Hammer differs from when Sledge Hammer is used on its own and when it is used in a combo canceling from another move. Due to this, the circumstances are different after Sledge Hammer hits as part of a combo.

Fix: Made it so that the time frame of the stop theatrics of the Sledge Hammer (when cancled into) is the same as when it is used on its own.

Need a full rundown of Guile? Check out the Guile announcement post here which includes his moves and his new stage with screenshots! You can also watch his trailer on our YouTube Channel.

The hunts, the Corps, and more at PAX East 2016

Apr 27, 2016 // Kellen Haney

What a weekend! From April 22-24, Boston was home to PAX East 2016, where tens of thousands of fans of all kinds of games – including video games, board games, and more – gathered together to celebrate all things gaming. On behalf of all of Capcom, we want to offer a huge thanks to all of our wonderful fans who made it out to Boston, said hello, and just generally came to show support and see all the cool stuff we had on display. We hope you all had fun with the demos, and grabbed some cool swag and merchandise from the Capcom Store, which sold out of most of their products! Even if you weren’t able to make it, thank you for your continued support – it’s why we do what we do at Capcom. And for those that missed it, here’s a quick peek at what we had going on at the show.

PAX East was the first-ever US event debuting the demo for Monster Hunter Generations! By the end of it everyone’s voice felt like a Tigrex’s, but it was worth it to see all the happy hunters. In MH Generations, you’ll be visiting towns both past and present, and traveling between them via an airship – and what better way to celebrate than with an airship of our own? MH Generations demos were playable on the deck of the massive balloon airship, which stood out on the show floor and made a handy point of reference for navigating the walkways – you always knew where the monsters were, no paintballs or tracking required.

As for the demo itself, both veteran and fledgling hunters gathered together to hunt down the Great Maccao, a new bouncy and evasive bird wyvern, and the Nargacuga, a shadowy stalker wyvern returning from past games. The biggest draw, however, was the Glavenus, a monster so large that the Nargacuga could hide in its shadow! This massive brute wyvern is one of the new Fated Four monsters that threaten the villages you’ll visit in the game.

Of course, we could always count on hunters helping each other out. Teamwork is key in Monster Hunter, and veteran hunters were always showing new players the ropes, communicating, and working together in a great show of what the MH community is all about.

We also had a number of fans and cosplayers stop by to say hello, including a Furious Rajang huntress (who was really quite nice and not furious at all).

Over on the Umbrella Corps side, things were a bit more competitive. We ran a number of tournaments, with some great prizes going to the winners! Lots of players found that if they couldn’t take each other out, they could still break one another’s Zombie Jammer, the back-mounted device that keeps the hordes of zombies from detecting them. And if your Jammer breaks, well… it means you need to watch your back not just for the enemy team, but also zombies looking for a snack! There’s nothing quite like the threat of the undead to keep players on their toes.  Nearly every match came down to the wire, and close communication among teammates, as well as sticking together and avoiding going “lone wolf,” was often the key to victory in some of the more tense matches.

Street Fighter V also made a splash at the event – at the Capcom booth, we had plenty of setups complemented by the show floor to replicate that noisy arcade feel of the 90s, while the PAX Arena showcased the game with an invitational tournament. SFV was also on display at various booths to show off the latest in fight sticks and PC hardware!

That about wraps it up for PAX East 2016 – Capcom will be at more events throughout the year, so hopefully we’ll catch you at one of ‘em! And again – thank you for your continued support!

Monster Hunter Generations Felynes get outfitted in divine Okami style

Apr 23, 2016 // Yuri Araujo

Turn your Felyne into a celestial beast with this Amaterasu ensemble from Okami!

Just as Okami reaches its 10th anniversary milestone (originally released in Japan on April 20, 2006), we honor this game’s divine artistry with a collaboration tribute for Monster Hunter Generations… by dressing up a cat as a dog.

Okay, it’s technically a Felyne, and Amaterasu embodies a wolf, but let’s leave those little details behind as we bask in the beauty of this reveal trailer:

In Monster Hunter Generations, your Felynes can either be Palicoes (AI) or you can step into their paws yourself by taking full control of them in Prowler Mode. But if playing as a Hunter is more your jam, we also announced a gear set based on Marth from the Fire Emblem series.

And as an added bonus, today (April 22) is also Earth Day, and we just so happen to have a fitting Okami Earth Day video from a few years ago for your viewing pleasure:

Howler in the comments if you can’t wait to play as a Felyne Ammy in MH Generations this summer! =)
