Some design insights for Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition’s launch

Jun 23, 2015 // GregaMan

I know I’ve overused this line by now, but let’s face it—we all have. And so it is that I declare to you all: The time has come, my friends.

Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is out in North America today in for PS4 , Xbox One , and PC . It’ll run you $24.99 for a ton of content and one of the finest action gaming experiences of all time.

In celebration, the game’s director Hideaki Itsuno has offered some more words of insight on Nero and Vergil’s designs. I also highly recommend you watch the archive of his E3 livestream appearance. It was wonderful.

Enjoy his text after the jump.

———————-

Regarding Nero’s new “Prototype” costume:
I was originally planning to have him in the standard Order of the Sword uniform, but the producer felt I should include the costume that meant the most to me personally as the director, so I went with this. It’s one of the early designs that was nixed early on in the original game’s development.

The costume is characterized by the double-button coat, a motif borrowed from old Japanese military uniforms, along with the scarf, which symbolizes his role as the hero. We strove perhaps a bit too hard for uniqueness, and in the end we felt it came off a bit too comic booky, so it wasn’t selected as his final design. But it does look considerably more “heroic” than his current design, wouldn’t you say? It’s pretty cool seeing his scarf flowing in the breeze during cutscenes when you select this costume, so be sure to try it out for yourself.

On Vergil:
Vergil was devised from the beginning as a character who uses a Japanese sword, but determining how he used it was a process of trial-and-error. We were still deliberating over it when I was in America hashing out motion capture details with our action director, Mr. Shimomura, and that’s when I witnessed the Japanese swordplay of one Dan Southworth (the voice and motion actor for Vergil). It was not exactly like that of a true Japanese warrior, but had its own Western flavor perfectly mixed in, and I said, “That’s it!” It showed a respect for authentic Japanese swordsmanship, but balanced with a slightly rough, wild style that perfectly fit Vergil’s profile of a Western man using a Japanese sword.

This image of the character was carried on to his rendition in DmC Devil May Cry, which we made in England, and his movement in DMC4 Special Edition is a definitive amalgam of his past renditions.

Thank you for reading, and before I leave, since it was not a feature on consoles when DMC4 first released in 2008, I would like to encourage all of you that are playing Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition to upload and share your own combo videos online. The entire dev team is really looking forward to watching these.

Thank you all so much for your ongoing support for DMC4 Special Edition and the DMC series.

———————-

Happy demon hunting, everyone, and don’t forget to upload those combo videos! We’ll add ones we love to the DMC4SE Community Videos playlist , so be sure to check it periodically. Now get practicing for the next Style Tournament, beginning a little later this summer!

Birdie and Cammy Join SFV

Jun 16, 2015 // ComboFiend

Hey everyone! We have some exciting announcements for you all today! Just announced at the Sony press conference at E3, Cammy and Birdie will be joining the roster of Street Fighter V!

Cammy

Cammy has been a staple of the Street Fighter series since Super Street Fighter II, and returns faster and stronger than ever before. Utilizing a wide variety of quick ground and aerial attacks to pressure her opponents, her rush down style is sure to please offensive minded players everywhere.

V-Skill : Axel Spin Knuckle

Cammy performs a short hop that evades projectiles and delivers a gut punch to her foe. If used close enough, she will cross over to the other side of the opponent before delivering her attack.

V-Trigger: Delta Drive

When activated, the speed and number of hits Cammy’s special attacks deal increases dramatically for a short period of time, further increasing her ability to pressure and damage opponents.

Birdie

Birdie makes his long awaited return, having last appeared in the Alpha series over 10 years ago. When we last saw him, he was a henchman for Shadaloo and was definitely in better shape. Although he’s clearly been slacking on his diet, don’t let the giant belly fool you! Completely redesigned and reimagined, Birdie’s comedic look masks the fierce power packed behind every move. With access to long-range chain attacks as well as up-close command grabs, Birdie is a threat from every distance.

V-Skill : Break Time (3 Variations)

Depending on the direction you push when activating the V-Skill, Birdie pulls out one of three different items from his pockets: a banana peel that trips up opponents on the ground, an energy drink that is rolled as a projectile, both of which give him a minor V-Gauge boost and lastly, a donut that is quickly eaten and gives him a major V-Gauge boost!

V-Trigger: Enjoy Time

Birdie’s V-Trigger enrages him and powers up his special attacks by increasing their movement for a short period of time, while also adding armor and damage, making him that much harder to stop!

That’s not all that was announced though! The first online beta test for Street Fighter V will be PS4 exclusive, and begins on July 23, for a period of 5 days, until July 28. In North America, fans who pre-order the game through select retailers or PSN, will be granted automatic access to the beta. In Europe or Asia, anyone who would like to take part in the Beta should head to www.streetfighter.com , and follow the various steps and sign up for a chance to join the fight! Additional beta tests will be taking place throughout the rest of the year and we’ll have more details to share about them at a later date.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that Street Fighter V will be releasing in Spring 2016. Be on the lookout for new surprises and announcements as they become available, as there is so much more to come!

Street Fighter V E3 Exhibition Details!

Jun 12, 2015 // ComboFiend

Attention all Street Fighters, I come bearing news that’s sure to make your hype levels “Rise Up!” to levels unseen. Yes, Street Fighter V will be playable at E3, but it doesn’t stop there! From the ComboFiend Kumite to Pro Player Exhibitions and Open Single Elimination Tournaments, we’ll be showcasing SFV in the grandest of fashions.

Continue on for exhibition and Capcom Fighters stream details!

EDIT: Added pictures of the exclusive SFV PS4 faceplate winners of our single tournaments will receive.

At E3, we plan to display the awesomeness that is Street Fighter V through numerous exhibitions. During these exhibitions, we expect those who are playing the game live and those watching at home to be making constant discoveries about the intricacies of the Street Fighter V battle system. With this build being drastically different than the Capcom Cup build in terms of looks, speed, and gameplay, this is something you definitely don’t want to miss.

Now, before I provide you the streaming schedule over the three days, allow me to first elaborate on the planned exhibitions.

Single Elimination Tournaments

These will be peppered throughout the event and will contain eight players on a first come, first served basis. These eight players will battle it out in the first ever tournaments for Street Fighter V on the legendary Capcom Pro Tour e-Sports stage for a chance at some exclusive SFV goodies. Maybe a pro or two will enter these and show you something new? Maybe some new challengers will rise up and show them how it’s done in this brand new game? You’ll have to tune in and find out!

Here are pictures of the exclusive SFV PS4 faceplate we’re giving away as prizes to the winners of our Single Elimination Tournaments

ComboFiend Kumite

It’s been a while since I’ve been on the big stage and there will be no SFV stage bigger than the one at E3. During the ComboFiend Kumite, I’ll be playing against world renowned Street Fighter teams such as Team Evil Geniuses (Justin Wong, Ricky Ortiz, PR Rog, Momochi, K-Brad, and ChocoBlanka), Team Mad Catz (Daigo, Tokido, Mago), and Team Razer (Xian, Fuudo, and RB) in a few sets. Who will have more wins, me or them? Although the game is brand new, these amazing players have shown great Street Fighter prowess, so I’m sure I’ll have my hands full!

Character Demonstrations

During the Character Demonstrations I’ll hop on the stream and show off all the characters revealed up until E3. I’ll go through their V-Triggers, V-Skills, and general explanations of the characters themselves and may even run a set showing off new tech against a foe or two.

Pro Exhibition: Team Tournament

It’s a 3v3 team battle royal as teams Mad Catz, Evil Geniuses and Razer battle one another for Street Fighter V supremacy. With only a few hours to practice prior to the start of this, it’ll be interesting to see what tricks and tactics these pros will come up with!

Pro Exhibition: Singles Tournament

Team loyalty goes out the window as each pro player fends for themselves in what’s sure to be a slobber knocker. With big cash on the line, which of these pros will rise up and become the first ever official SFV tournament champion?

Editor Elimination Exhibition (E3)

Leading editors in the gaming industry go at it to prove which publication holds the strongest Street Fighter. Last year’s editor tournament finals in USFIV between IGN’s Vince Ingenito and Edge’s Nathan Brown came down to a nail biting finish, with Nathan taking the crown home. Will these two make it to the finals again or will we see some new faces take them out? Which publication houses the strongest Street Fighter? Tune in and see for yourself!

With so much new information to digest, it may be a little overwhelming to keep up with what’s happening on screen. Have no fear however, as Ultra David, James Chen, Mike Ross, and I will be on commentary throughout the show, giving you insight into what’s unfolding right before your very eyes.

Street Fighter V Battle System Details

Jun 11, 2015 // ComboFiend

Hey everyone, we got some pretty hype Street Fighter V news today! Nope, it’s not a new character, but rather information on something that will affect all characters; the battle system. For SFV, we’re excited to talk about the new Variable System!

For a detailed explanation of how the V-System works and how it will make each character a unique experience, continue on.

The V-System consists of three variable mechanics all built around the new V-Gauge, which primarily builds as your character takes damage. The three mechanics are: V-Skill, V-Trigger and V-Reversal.

V-Skill

V-Skills are unique skills per character that can be accessed at any time by pressing medium punch and medium kick together. These skills do not require use of the V-Gauge and have different uses per character (e.g. mobility, offensive, defensive). V-Skills are rather important in battle as they may help a character in an area they’re weak at or help to fill up the V-Gauge quicker. Learning how to properly and efficiently use each character’s V-Skill will be key in winning matches.

V-Trigger

V-Triggers are unique abilities per character that can only be activated once the V-Gauge is full, by pressing heavy punch and heavy kick together. V-Triggers, much like Ultras in Street Fighter IV, are a way for your character to turn the tide of battle. That, however, is where the similarities end. Activating the V-Trigger, which allows access to a character’s full potential, is merely step one. It is completely up to the player to properly utilize the benefits received from the V-Trigger to change the course of the match. As V-Triggers add quite a bit of depth to each character, mastering their use will be paramount to victory.

V-Reversals

V-Reversals take up one stock of V-Gauge, and allow a player to counter the attack of the opponent while blocking, thus creating some breathing room. They are similar to “Alpha counters” from the Street Fighter Alpha series, but this time not every counter results in a universal effect; some push the opponent back, some knock them down and some switch sides. Players should explore each character to see how their V-Reversals function.

EX Gauge

That’s not all, however, as there is also the EX Gauge, which builds as you deal damage to the opponent. The EX Gauge allows characters to perform powered up versions of their special attacks and when maxed out, their Critical Art. Critical Arts are highly damaging, cinematic attacks that are unique to each character.

V-Skill and V-Trigger Breakdown for the Current Characters

Ryu

V-Skill: Mind’s Eye

Ryu uses his senses to “see” the opponent’s next attack and parries it accordingly. All attacks (high, low, mid) and projectiles can be parried if timed correctly. Multi hitting attacks can also be parried with the correct timing. Fans of Street Fighter III will remember that the “parry” was the core battle mechanic of that entire series! The mechanic now returns as a single V-Skill of Ryu, demonstrating how serious we are about making every character unique to one another. Ryu gains V-Gauge for each successful parry.

V-Trigger: Denjin Renki

Ryu powers up and enters Denjin Renki mode. In this mode, his normal and EX Hadokens, as well as his Shinkuu Hadoken gain an electric charge, resulting in faster travel speed, higher damage, and higher stun. While in this mode, normal and EX Hadokens can also be charged, which result in even higher damage or a guard break if blocked.  Additionally, his Shoryuken attack also deals additional damage when it connects against the opponent.

  • Note – Denjin Renki mode only lasts a short amount of time and is tied to a timer.

Chun-Li

V-Skill: Rankyaku

Chun-Li powerfully kicks off the ground and flies toward her opponent at an angle lower than her normal jump. While in the air, Chun-Li can use air attacks and special moves as she descends upon the opponent.

V-Trigger: Renkiko

Chun-Li concentrates her ki into her hands and feet which results in attacks hitting more times than normal. Light attacks have no additional benefits, medium attacks hit one extra time, heavy attacks hit two extra times. This benefit is not extended to special attacks.

  • Note – Renkiko only lasts a short amount of time and is tied to a timer.

Nash

V-Skill: Bullet Clear

Nash reaches out and absorbs any normal projectile coming his way. If close enough to the opponent, Nash can absorb their life force, causing damage. Each time Nash touches the opponent or clears a projectile, he gains a small amount of V-Gauge.

V-Trigger: Sonic Move

Nash travels at supersonic speed and ends in one of three different places near the opponent based on what the player inputs. Players can choose to end up behind the opponent on the ground, behind the opponent in the air, or in front of the opponent in the air, and can act immediately once Nash appears.

M.Bison

V-Skill: Psycho Reflect

M.Bison uses his Psycho Power to absorb any normal projectile or attack coming his way. If the player continues to hold down the Psycho Reflect after absorbing either the projectile or attack, M.Bison will throw a Psycho Shot back at the opponent. Each time M.Bison successfully reflects a projectile or attack he gains a small amount of V-Gauge.

V-Trigger: Psycho Power

M.Bison completely unleashes his Psycho Power, which results in a change to his dash and certain special attacks. He now teleports during his dash, able to pass through projectiles and attacks, and also disappears and reappears during his Somersault Skull Diver and Double Knee Press attacks, making them extremely hard to track.

  • Note – Psycho Power only lasts a short amount of time and is tied to a timer.

So there you have it, the new Variable System for SFV. Although V-Skills and V-Triggers are easy to use, they will definitely take time to master. And with the activation command tied to a simple set of button presses, players will now have more time to concentrate on what truly lies at the heart of Street Fighter: Rising Up against the competition!

I can’t wait for you all to get your hands on this. Until next time!

MH animation short by NCHProductions: Egg runs, part 2

Jun 09, 2015 // Yuri Araujo

MH-loving animation studio NCHProductions is back with another stab at explaning the mysteries surrounding the world of Monster Hunter! This time, we find out how Egg delivery quests spawn giant rocks that block your route to the Base Camp:

Okay, I can’t verify whether or not any of this is officially canon, but I can verify that it was pretty hilarious! If you liked what you saw, be sure to check out their channel for even more Monster Hunter animation shorts.

Oh, and just for reference here’s Egg runs – Part 1, which I wrote about late last year. Enjoy!

PS: I actually just learned from this Reddit post that in  MH4U , you can actually destroy those rocks either with bombs or other attacks! It didn’t use to be like this in previous game, but it’s definitely a welcome change!

New Resident Evil 0 trailer and screens are eerie, pretty

Jun 08, 2015 // GregaMan

Yes, as previously announced in brief, the atmospheric survival horror of 2002’s Resident Evil 0 is being remastered for a new generation. Following up on the success of this year’s runaway hit remastering of Resident Evil, RE0 will feature gorgeously upgraded HD visuals and sound, with toggle-able aspect ratio (16:9 or classic 4:3) and an optional updated control scheme.

Experience the origin of the entire Resident Evil series canon when Resident Evil 0 drops for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC in early 2016. Now hit the jump for a trailer and some purty screens!

RE0 puts players in the shoes of two protagonists—S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team’s resourceful but green rookie Rebecca Chambers, and Billy Coen, an ex-Navy lieutenant on death row. Throughout the game, players will take control of both characters, with the ability to switch control between the two on the fly. Learning the advantages of each character will be key to surviving the nightmare.

Look forward to more info on the game in the near future!

Mega Man Legacy Collection brings enhanced 8-bit classics to new platforms

Jun 08, 2015 // Minish Capcom

In  mere months you’ll be able to play the original six Mega Man games in crisp 1080p and enhanced with modern bonuses. Mega Man Legacy Collection hits Xbox One, PS4 and PC digital storefronts this summer, with a digital Nintendo 3DS version following in the winter.

In addition to the original six games, you also get challenges, a huge of-the-era museum packed with visual history and a helpful database that informs AND tests you on your Mega Man prowess. And for those keeping track, the trailer jam is “Searing Scissors,” part of OverClocked Remix’s excellent “For Everlasting Peace” album.

Some notes about the additional modes:

Leaderboards, challenges, replays: Challenge Mode takes moments from each title and weaves them into a series of, well, challenges! So things like ‘can you do these six areas strung together with one life bar’ or ‘try fighting all six Mega Man 1 bosses in a row.’ And to keep the quest for the best time alive, the top performers in each Challenge will have their replay data uploaded and viewable to everyone! There will be many challenges to vex seasoned players AND help train newcomers in the ways of the Blue Bomber.

Database:  Each Mega Man game will have a database that includes enemy lists. From here you can read details about certain enemies and hop directly to them for a practice session. For example, say you’re tired of playing all the way to Quick Man just to lose over and over. With the database, you can hop directly to him and practice that buster run until you get it down to a science. Then it’s off to the full game for the real deal!

Museum : MMLC will sport an exhaustive collection of sketches, art and other visual materials that help put you in that 1987~1992 time period. Part of this game’s goal is the preservation of history, and the folks at Digital Eclipse are scanning items at absurdly high resolutions to make them as clean and clear as possible.

Speaking of Digital Eclipse, the team is bringing these 8-bit classics over via their new Eclipse Engine, which rebuilds the original games from their source elements. The result is a sharp, clean picture that proudly displays these iconic sprites in lovely 1080p, and presents the games as they existed in their original forms.

“Movies have the Criterion Collection, but there hasn’t been anything like that for games,” said Frank Cifaldi, Head of Restoration for Digital Eclipse. “We’re living in the golden age of a brand new form of artistic expression, and we’re not doing a very good job of making sure our games will be available five years from now, let alone fifty. The more we can do right now to take video game preservation seriously, the safer our history will be.”

For $14.99 you’ll get six timeless classics, a huge museum of high-res images and challenges with their own leaderboards and replays.

We’ll stream the title from E3 next week, and if you’re attending SDCC this year, you’ll be able to play it ahead of its release!
