#HowDoYouHunt top 10 entries and winner revealed!

Aug 21, 2015 // Yuri Araujo

Arguably the coolest contest we’ve ever run in this company (at least I think so!), the #HowDoYouHunt contest finally has a winner!

First of all, I want to thank everyone for participating (including Gaijinhunter, who was not even eligible to win!). And I must say it was incredibly hard to narrow the lenghty list of awesome entries down to just a Top 10; never mind selecting a winner. This was harder than any G Rank I’ve ever had to do!

I even recruited help from people from various departments here, making sure they had worked on and played at least 2  Monster Hunter  titles. They also complained it was extremely hard to pick winner!

All that is to say: great job, everyone!

Now here’s the Top 10 entries and our winner:

YankeeBankee – Rinforzato, Hunting Horn

Just a very heart-warming entry that hits a lot of the right notes =)

Keihkono – Teostra’s Emblem, Sword and Shield

Yes, I want my hunts to look like their were directed by Michael Bay!

scoutstiel – Doomblade “Slave”, Long Sword

Can definitely relate to the desire of taking MH weapons to dinner parties.

ShaolinHammer – Imperial Gunhammer, Hammer

He knows how to use a hammer in real life!!!

ChocoDotori – Permanence, Charge Blade

I can’t stop thinking of the Felyne literally eating sand after falling from the Sandskiff…

itsavgbltpta – Lunatic Rose, Sword and Shield

Ah yes! Love the lyrics and use of the Felyne theme!

Shawn_1995 – Epitaph Eternal, Great Sword

So much energy!!! And yes, anyone who updgrades an Ancient Shard weapon all the way deserves a Patience badge of sorts.

So that’s 7 entries so far, in no particular order, and I hope you can agree with me that any of these could have taken the top prize… however, these next few entries netted out with the most votes from our internal panel of judges; so here’s our Top 3, including the winner:

3RD

YukiLilyyy – Daora’s Entom, Insect Glaive

Guildmarm playing a ukelele caught us all by surprise and sure captured my heart.

2ND

Hakuramen – Akantor Bow, Bow

Sounds just like the game is bleeding into real life!

GRAND PRIZE:

VengefulTorture – Dual Dragons “Angst”, Dual Blades

“IT’S JUST MATH!” Sorry, can’t argue with math. =]

Well played, sir; you win a life-size replica of the Dual Dragons “Angst”!

Again, thanks to everyone who participated and made this an awesome contest! I definitely had a lot of fun reviewing each individual entry and I’ve actually read a lot of entrants say they had fun making their video entries. So there: the contest is over, but if you feel like making your own video telling everyone #HowDoYouHunt, why not?

Mega Man Legacy Collection art contest winners revealed

Aug 21, 2015 // GregaMan

Last month, we began an  Art Contest   wherein we challenged you to submit your best reimaginings of the box art for Mega Man 1-6 in commemoration of the imminently launching  Mega Man Legacy Collection. Y’all were all too eager to deliver, making this contest a true joy–and challenge–to judge. Nevertheless, we have emerged with our six winners, whom you can confirm after the jump!!

—————————————–

Submitted by: KaitlinEXE

Comment from MMLC  Producer Rey Jimenez:
“I really love this one. It fits very well with the established Mega Man art style. Also, having the Robot Masters interact with the white bars and go in front of them is a really nice touch. Gives the whole piece depth.”

—————————————–

Submitted by:  Mark

Comment from Rockman Unity’s Ucchy:
“Ah, the ‘Bad Box Art Mega Man,’ or as he’s fondly(?) dubbed in Japan, Ossan (old fart) Mega Man. Perhaps I’m treading recklessly, but I couldn’t help but go for this one. Given how this piece is designed I feel like it’s fair game. Still though, where the heck is this supposed to be (what with the palm trees)?”

Submitted by: DanRoot

Comment from MMLC  Producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya:
“You’ve Minecraft-ified the world of Mega Man and done a splendid job of it. The artwork makes the viewer feel like this kind of game actually exists.”

Comment from  Rockman Unity’s  Ucchy:
“This is a fun piece that makes you want to look around for who is where, and makes you wonder if the 2D world of Mega Man would actually look something like this. Seeing the Mecha Dragon from straight on also feels fresh.”

Submitted by: Hanzo

Comment from  MMLC  Producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya:
“This is a really polished piece of art! From the fierce enemies reflected in his buster to Mega Man’s distinct expression, this piece really tells a story and feels pulled straight out of a high-octane action scene.”

Comment from  Rockman Unity’s  Ucchy:
“This is just plain good! It’s really cool! There’s a great dynamism to Mega Man and Rush’s expressions, too. Really great.”

Submitted by: Dustin Wilkinson

Comment from  MMLC  Producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya:
“This feels like it could be turned into an NES box as-is! And yet, the detailed touches applied to Mega Man and Proto Man also give it a fresh feeling.”

—————————————–

Submitted by: David B

Comment from  MMLC  Producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya:
“This is a   really powerful piece; its liberal use of black really makes the images pop. The layout and use of colors feels a bit like an old movie poster, which appeals to me personally.”

Comment from  Rockman Unity’s  Ucchy:
“Taking 6’s theme of robots vying for the title of supreme fighting robot and turning it into a NES-style package is a really great concept! Personally, I found it amusing that everyone is depicted very coolly here except for Eddy, who’s making a derpface.”

Congrats to all winners! You will be contacted within the day about your prizes.

MMLC Robot Master List: Centaur Man

Aug 21, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-042

Weapon:  Centaur Flash

Weakness:  Knight Crusher

A robot based on the mythical creature. Try to fight him from the center of the arena as much as possible. If you stand to the sides, you’ll be hit by his spread shot.

Centaur Man! Centaur Man bears the noble distinction of being the only quadrupedal Robot Master evah. Yes, as the name indicates, Centaur Man is half centaur, half man, which I believe makes him three quarters man, one quarter horse. Actually, in the Rockman 6 manga, Centaur Man is revealed to be a woman. Not the point!

As told in myth of yore, Centaur Man bears the formidable power to distort space and time, and wields an arm cannon that shoots scattering, ricocheting blasts. Centaur Man’s quadruped design grants a notable increase in agility, but also makes Centaur Man one of the few Robot Masters unable to jump.

Use Knight Man’s Knight Crusher to turn this centaur into a dead-taur. Your reward is the almighty Centaur Flash, a time-stopping weapon similar to the Flash Stopper or Time Stopper of games past, but with the notable distinction of causing damage to enemies in the vicinity at the moment of its flash. Dazzling!

David Oxford   (The Mega Man Network)
Centaur Man is not your little pony, and his friendship isn’t magic — though the Centaur Flash comes pretty close, as it allows him to essentially halt time by distorting space. In addition to freezing opponents in place, he can close the gap pretty effectively by teleporting, allowing him trample foes with his front legs, or put some distance so his spreading buster shots will be all the more devastating.

In a bizarre twist, Shigeto Ikehara’s manga adaptation of Mega Man 6 actually reveals Centaur Man to be a woman who loved Knight Man, which one would imagine might make the Knight Crush an emotional weakness as well as a physical one.

Centaur Man’s appearance is a pretty powerful Robot Master visual to wrap up the Nintendo Entertainment System era of the games on, with a unique form that has not quite been replicated since. That said, Centaur Man does reappear in the second arcade game, there accentuating his already powerful appearance with a naginata, a shield, and the Centaur Arrow.

Keisuke Mizuno  (Character designer for TruForce)

Plainly put, having a four-legged boss was really novel. There’s a sort of romantic quality to the whole centaur thing. I used to try and draw him a lot, and I feel like that actually helped me learn how to draw horse’s feet pretty well for a kid.

Interview with a Capcom star – Dan Southworth

Aug 20, 2015 // GregaMan

Last week we got to chat with beloved Dante portrayer Reuben Langdon for an exclusive interview ,  but it’s probably safe to say that one of the biggest draws  Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition brought to the table was the return of fan favorite anti-villain Vergil.

There would be no Vergil without the excellent voice and motion work of Dan Southworth, who has portrayed the character since his breakout appearance in  Devil May Cry 3.  Naturally, we reached out to Dan as well to get his insight on fleshing out the character and the series itself, and he kindly delivered. Hit the jump to read on!

————————–

Capcom Unity: How did you become involved in the Devil May Cry series? Was the Devil May Cry series your first entry point into video games?

Dan Southworth: I auditioned and was cast. I’m not quite sure if my first experience with motion capture was Devil May Cry or if it was being the Jet Li motion double on pick-ups for a video game he did. Devil May Cry was definitely my first encounter with the WHOLE motion capture experience, as motion capture performer, actor and voice actor.

CU: Director Itsuno-san has suggested that certain aspects of Vergil’s character didn’t really fall into place until he met you and saw how you handled a Japanese sword. As he described it:

“It showed a respect for authentic Japanese swordsmanship, but balanced with a slightly rough, wild style that perfectly fit Vergil’s profile of a Western man using a Japanese sword.”

In your performance, were you conscious of this notion of “Japanese sword fighting with a slight Western twist,” or did that just come about naturally?

DS: I was aware of it and at first I worried if it would have cost me the job.  I knew enough about samurai culture and swordsmanship to take a serious and disciplined approach.  I practiced and found an expert to work with.  In this way I was very Japanese in character.  I also knew that I would not attain the specificity of a refined Japanese swordsman in so short a time period.  The only way to overcome this handicap was to use my own 30 years of martial arts experience and 20 years of film experience to make deliberate movements I could own with the nuance of an experienced and seasoned character such as Vergil.  I even developed some good ole cowboy flair.  In this way I was very “Western.”  To my astonishment these movements were incorporated into the character.  In Marvel vs. Capcom 3 some of my flair is incorporated into the character’s finishing move…  What a tremendous honor to the work.

↑ The gang got back together at E3 this year for a brief reunion. (Left to right: Dan Southworth, Hideaki Itsuno, Reuben Langdon)

↑ Alternate angle provided by a fan.

CU: What other things did you find crucial to your portrayal of Vergil? What defines him as a character to you?

DS: I think that fortunately for me, what was crucial to my portrayal of Vergil was that he was a reflection of my own personal struggle as an actor at that very moment in time. I was intense, unyielding, doggedly tenacious in my focus and operating from a dark emotional disposition. I was able to express this inner intensity as the character.  What defines Vergil as a character to me is that while he seems like the perfect samurai in his very calm and calculated demeanor, you can always sense the simmering intensity and even rage. When he finally does unleash its quite satisfying.

CU: How physically taxing was the motion capturing process for you? Were Vergil’s in-game combat moves motion-captured?

DS: What is most taxing about the motion capture process is that you can keep shooting scene after scene with very little down time when compared to film or television. In comparison you can end up shooting 7-15 scenes a day instead of 2-5 on a film or television set (barring soap operas, of course). As far as “combat moves” is concerned, I use to be hired very often to perform “in game” action, or as you have called it, “combat moves,” but it’s not usual for a performer hired to act in the cinematic scenes to then do “in game” motion. “In game” motion can be 10 times more taxing than performing in cinematic scenes and if you had to do both during the same shooting schedule your performance in either would suffer.

CU: What was your favorite sequence or moment to perform? What was most challenging?

DS: Believe it or not, my favorite sequences to perform are not actually the action sequences. I enjoy really digging in and trying to find ways to make the “talking moments” more interesting to watch. That will always remain the most challenging and therefore the most exhilarating challenge for me.

↑ “Jackpot!”

CU: Where else can fans see you in action? Anything you’d like to plug or tease?

DS: Fans can also see my work as Kenshi, blind swordsman, in Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 2 at Machinima on Youtube. I also recently finished filming the role of Shiro in the sci-fi action feature Hunted. Look for it next year.

CU: Any final message for all those fans out there?

DS: Thank you for your interest in my work….It’s nice that it is appreciated.

Big thanks to Dan for sharing his candid insights, and for making Vergil one of the coolest characters in gaming!

Banjo Guy Ollie breaks tradition for Spark Mandrill cover, shreds electric guitar

Aug 20, 2015 // Yuri Araujo

Back when I posted Banjo Guy Ollie’s first Mega Man cover , I closed the blog post by wishing that he’d do a cover of Spark Mandrill some day… and now that’s finally a reality!

And to aptly match Spark Mandrill ‘s electrifying sound, he switched over to an electric guitar. He even recruited help from DonutDrums to lay a rock solid foundation to all the guitar shredding. Definitely a welcome addition!

Hope you enjoyed this, and make sure to stop by Banjo Guy Ollie‘s and DonutDrums‘ pages to say hi and leave a like.

MMLC Robot Master List: Blizzard Man

Aug 20, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-041

Weapon:  Blizzard Attack

Weakness:  Flame Blast

Originally a monitoring robot at the South Pole, it was modified for combat. Dodge its charge attack by jumping near the center of the arena.

We’re in Mega Man 6 territory now, friends, and that means each of the robot masters we’ll be looking at henceforth were reprogrammed for evil and world domination by the utterly nefarious but totally not suspicious in any other way “Mr. X.” Today let’s look at Blizzard Man.

Blizzard Man perpetuated a tradition of cold-themed bosses which began with Ice Man in the very first game, and would continue well on into the Mega Man X series with the likes of Chill Penguin and Frost Walrus. These bosses are often said to be some of the easiest, and I would venture that Blizzard Man fits right in, from his highly dodgeable attacks to his utterly nonthreatening appearance.

Essentially what we’re dealing with here is a giant snowball on skis. Also, his primary attack is to summon four snowflakes at you. More dangerous is his rolling attack, but this too can be avoided with a little well timed jumping. If you find yourself having trouble, you can use the Flame Blast for an extra leg up.

Defeating Blizzard Man will earn you the deadly Blizzard Attack, allowing Mega Man to summon his own snowflakes. Let the massacre begin.

David Oxford   (The Mega Man Network)
It’s no small secret that Mega Man 6 remains the only game in the series to feature Robot Masters created by fans from North America, thanks to a contest run by Nintendo Power back in the day. Without knowing which ones were the results of the contest, you might be forgiven for thinking that Blizzard Man was one of the pair, thanks to his design which makes him look like he’d be right at home on a Canadian ski resort.

With the appearance of a large robotic snowman with skis and a toque, his design has served him well, leading to him winning three gold medals in the Winter Robot Olympics and serving as an Antarctic observation robot in the off-season (Ice Man says ‘hi,’ by the way). With his wide-reaching Blizzard Attack and rolling body slam, he attempted to become the strongest robot in Mr. X’s competition. With the competition turning out to be a farce, however, he’s gone on to find work as a weather forecaster — a good use of his ability to explain things well. Unfortunately, he has a short temper, so one might imagine that an incorrect prediction might leave others in the studio feeling rather cold.

SFV Updated Beta Plans

Aug 20, 2015 // haunts

We are happy to announce that this week we will be running the first of a series of region specific stress tests for Street Fighter V, which aim to gather information from those areas.

The first regional test will be begin in Europe on Thursday August 20 th from 16:00-00:00 BST, and continue on Friday August 21 st from 16:00-00:00 BST. When we are confident with the results from this test, we will share the dates and times for North America and Asia’s region specific tests, and once we have successfully completed each regional stress test, we will announce the dates and times of the official global beta test. The global beta test will still take place for the previously promised 5 days of time, so the regional stress tests are just an added bonus.

Please note that, although this time we anticipate these tests being a smoother experience, there may still be issues experienced by some users which could hinder their experience. We would like to reiterate that all data received during each regional stress test will help us ensure that the game performs at an optimal level.

It should be noted that your Street Fighter V beta will still work, and you should not require another code, however please ensure you have installed the latest patch, if your beta has not automatically updated.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition Style Tournament – Round 5 Community Vote

Aug 19, 2015 // GregaMan

It’s that time again! Hit the jump to view the Top Five submissions for Round 5 of the ongoing Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition Style Tournament, then place your votes!

Vergil is a particularly versatile and powerful character, but the high enemy count and complicated geometry of this fight—not to mention the Dante Must Die setting stipulation—made for a tough round. Nevertheless, our entrants brought us some cool stunts, from Trick-canceled Perfect Judgment Cuts to flashy taunt finishers. This round also brought us some of our shortest entries, but there ain’t nothing wrong with that! Short and sweet is always better than long and meandering.

Now then! Let the voting begin.

Voting Deadline: Friday, August 21st at noon (PT).

MMLC Robot Master List: Crystal Man

Aug 19, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-040

Weapon:  Crystal Eye

Weakness:  Gyro Attack

A robot composed of crystal materials. His Crystal Eye is difficult to avoid, so take him out early with the weapon he is weak to.

Every robot serves a purpose (yes, even Adhering Suzy), and Crystal Man is the financier of Dr. Wily’s nefarious operation, using his unique ability to generate artificial crystals. By the time Mega Man gets to him, however, he’s been designated for combat, just like all the others.

Once you’ve made it through Crystal Man’s eerily beautiful lair, a battle with the fiendish financier awaits. He will attack with volleys of crystal balls which bounce off surfaces. These can be tricky to dodge, but try to stay close to him to make evasion more manageable. Use Gyro Man’s Gyro Attack to make the going a little less tough.

Upon victory, Crystal Man’s mystical Crystal Eye weapon will be yours! Use it to shoot stuff.

David Oxford  (The Mega Man Network)
Part of Crystal Man’s entire reason for being is to help fund Dr. Wily’s ambitions by manufacturing artificial crystals. How cool would it have been, then, if you could put a damper on Wily’s entire operation by taking Crystal Man out first? Sort of a reverse-DuckTales ending scenario.

Then again, given how bouncy the gems produced by the Crystal Eye are and the fact they disappear after a few moments, maybe that’s why Wily sent him off into battle instead of keeping him safe?

That aside, Crystal Man’s appearance is pretty neat, with all the rounded crystals adorning his armor, including the two found on each of his forearms. While the mask makes him look like another ninja-styled robot, perhaps the intent was to evoke the appearance of a mysterious fortune teller, seeing as that’s one of his hobbies?
