MMLC Robot Master List: Dive Man

Aug 06, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-031

Weapon:  Dive Missile

Weakness:  Skull Barrier, Dust Crusher

A miniature submarine robot. He mistakenly tends to fire himself towards you like a missile, so maybe ordinary rapid-fire would be better than using the weapon that plays on his weakness?

The water-themed boss is a long-standing tradition in the Mega Man universe, and Dive Man is Mega Man 4’s bid. Looking at his character art, I know what you’re thinking:

“Why does he need a periscope right above his exposed eyeballs?” Also “How does he see through the periscope if there’s no viewfinder?” Mega Man 4 aspires to answer none of these queries, but I am confident you’ll have a fun time regardless.

Dive Man’s ace in the hole is his Dive Missile, a standard homing missile which will track Mega Man and explode in his face. Defeat Dive Man, however, and the weapon is yours!

With that in mind, Dive Man is actually one of the easier boss fights in the game. He’s actually weak to both the Skull Barrier  and the Dust Crusher, and frankly he’s not that difficult to take on with just the buster thanks to his predictable linear attacks. He will frequently thrust his entire body toward Mega Man, a move allegedly caused by a robotic design defect, and simply jumping over him will put Mega Man in prime position to dish out some serious counter damage.

David Oxford , The Mega Man Network ( +Robot Master Field Guide )

“Dive Man stands out as a favorite for being the first vehicular-styled Robot Master of the series. Though he doesn’t transform like later models such as Turbo Man or Nitro Man, he still has all the cool features one would expect of a submarine built right in: fins to help guide him as he swims deep beneath the ocean’s surface, a hull-like chest, Dive Missiles which can home in on enemies, and best of all, a little periscope atop his helmet.

“Hmm, we never see if that thing actually works, do we?

“Oh, and his stage features some of the best music in Mega Man 4. Can’t forget that!”

MMLC Robot Master List: Dust Man

Aug 05, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-030

Weapon:  Dust Crusher

Weakness:  Ring Boomerang

Created as an automatic trash-gathering robot. He fires back the garbage that he sucks in. His attacks are easy to see coming, so he’s not too tough.

For us, it’s hard to even  fathom a world with robot vacuum cleaners, but Dr. Cossack dared to dream big, and so was born Dust Man. Unfortunately, where there are robots, there is the nefarious Dr. Wily, and where there is Dr. Wily, there is mayhem. Like Cossack’s other inventions, Dust Man was modified for combat with the aim of destroying Mega Man.

Dust Man’s special weapon is the Dust Crusher, an explosive mass of scrap metal which he can fire at opponents from a range. Doubly effective if the target is a neat-freak! He can also use his powerful vacuum chute to pull opponents toward him, which presents a sizable threat when you consider his bad breath.

Luckily, the weapon is yours if you best him battle! To do so, try using the Ring Boomerang–a tactic which surely already occurred to anyone who’s ever lost their wedding ring only to accidentally run the vacuum cleaner over it, thereby ruining both the ring and the vacuum.

Nadia Oxford , Co-Author of the Mega Man Robot Master Field Guide

Dust Man is the epitome of the robot underdog (excepting Rush when he’s under water, I guess). For starters, I remember how people reacted when he was unveiled in Mega Man 4. “A vacuum robot?” they said. “This is the end of Mega Man. Capcom has run out of ideas.”

Oh, we were such sweet summer children.

A deluge of ridicule rained down on Dust Man since, with a generous peppering of comments about how Cossack’s sanitation robot “sucks” (insert Alf-style “HA!” here). And, well, Dust Man is kind of pathetic; you can avoid his shots by jumping straight up into the air, and if you know how to defend yourself against the deadly pull of Mega Man 3’s Magnet Man, then you know how to defend yourself against Dust Man’s suction (i.e. walk in the other direction).

But if you’re having a really bad day and you somehow find yourself overpowered by this Dustbuster given legs, the Ring Boomerang will rip him apart like a dust bunny under a kitten’s claws.

Maybe that’s why I feel warmly towards Dust Man; I know he can’t actually hurt me, try though he might. His stage also has a melancholy, echoing theme that’s unlike anything else on the NES. Sure, maybe Capcom didn’t smoke its imagination coming up with Mega Man 4’s bosses, but it funneled a lot of hard work and cool ideas into the game’s soundtrack.

MMLC Robot Master List: Ring Man

Aug 04, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-029

Weapon: Ring Boomerang

Weakness: Pharaoh Shot

A robot made for battle. His Ring Boomerangs are swift and strong, so be ready to jump and dodge.

The previous Robot Masters we’ve explored from Mega Man 4 were all designed by Russian robotics wiz Dr. Cossack with some noble utilitarian purpose, be it farm irrigation or exploration of ruins. But not Ring Man! No, Ring Man was designed from the get-go to turn Mega Man into a scrap heap. And what better way to take out a super fighting robot than with large, metal rings, amirite?

Actually, Ring Man is one of the tougher Robot Masters in MM4, thanks to his above-average agility and dizzying projectile patterns. For an exhilarating challenge, try taking him on with only the buster.

If you’re not up for a challenge, Ring Man is, as you no doubt deduced logically, weak to pharaohs, and hence easily put down with the Pharaoh Shot.

For your troubles, you will inherit Ring Man’s Ring Boomerang, which is both a versatile weapon and a clever way to retrieve items from afar.

MMLC Robot Master List: Pharaoh Man

Aug 03, 2015 // GregaMan

Number: DWN-028

Weapon:  Pharaoh Shot

Weakness:  Flash Stopper

A high-performance robot made to explore pyramids. It’s hard to stand your ground against him in a head-to-head fight, so definitely use the weapon that plays on his weakness.

Having now stated on record multiple times that Mega Man 4 is my favorite game in the classic series, I think it’s safe to go ahead and reveal that, in this game’s own time, eight-year-old Greg thought Pharaoh Man was jumping the shark. “What was his original function?” I scoffed. “To rule over mankind?” I can understand how Dr. Cossack might have thought a robot with explosive drills for hands or a giant toadbot with the ability to summon rain might have served some benefit for  humanity, but what could he possibly have had in mind when developing a robot pharaoh?

Of course we all know now that Pharaoh Man was designed for exploring pyramids and other ruins, suggesting his resemblance to Tutankhamun was merely to establish an aesthetic motif. On top of this, Pharaoh Man turned out to be one of the coolest and most visually striking Robot Masters of all time. So I guess what I’m saying is, eight-year-old Greg can crammit.

Pharaoh Man also bestows Mega Man with one of the finest special weapons of all time—the chargeable Pharaoh Shot. This gives Mega Man the ability to summon a fireball in his bare hand, which can be fired in six directions, making it highly versatile. But first you have to wrest it from Pharaoh Man’s cold, dead mitts—a feat easier said than done . I recommend using the Flash Stopper to keep him in place.
