Honestly, I can’t believe it’s been ten years since we originally released this game, but so many of you have shown this game and its characters so much love that I wanted to say “Thank you!” by sharing some of my favorite AJ:AA fanworks, starting with the adorable piece of art: Apollo Justice Chibi Par-tay by weem (2009). I love how it includes almost every character, and they’re each doing their own very in-character thing. Extra bonus points for Valant’s magical bunnies and dove.

Patrick Kulikowski: If you know me well enough, you may see me occasionally joke about classic Capcom anthems like Takashi Tateishi’s “Dr. Wily Stage 1” from Mega Man 2 and Hiroshige Tonomura’s “The Moon” from Duck Tales being “too popular”.
Today is the day where I eat my own words — just LISTEN to this new, amazing rendition of Duck Tales’ “The Moon” as done by game composer Jukio “Kuabee” Kallio (Luftrausers, Nuclear Throne). This version uses the same sound palette (or “font”, if you will) employed by the game Bleed 2, so you can expect some sick guitar/synth action and pounding drums, not to mention uber-80s tom fills!
Man, just talking about it makes me want to boot up The Disney Afternoon Collection and defy gravity with some pixel-perfect pogo jumps. <3
Speaking of passionate fans, the Breath of Fire Relay II marathon handled by the folks at RPG Limit Break that we mentioned in our previous recap took place on November 24 th . After 31 hours, 8 minutes, and 3 seconds, Team Ryu emerged the victor, with Team Deis taking 2 nd place (31:09:31), Team Nina in 3 rd (31:36:53) and the one-man army of Team Jenja, aka “The Brave Man of the Dragon” taking last place with 34:20:58. Great work to all involved, and congrats on getting featured on Game Informer ! Twitch videos of the marathon can be watched below:

Quests : The beta features 3 quests across 2 environments from the game. In the Ancient Forest, you can hunt a fierce yet beginner-friendly Great Jagras or as a more experienced player confront the mighty threat of an Anjanath. In the Wildspire Waste, a massive, dry expanse with swamplands, you can face off against the intermediate level mud-slinging Barroth.
Rewards : In addition to an unquantifiable amount of fun, complete each quest and you’ll get some useful bonus items in the full game! Just make sure you use the same Sony Entertainment Network account for both the beta and the full game.
Additional Notes: Each quest can be done solo or with up to three other players online, and you’ll be able to choose from 14 different weapon types based on your preferred playstyle, which you can now change during quests at camp. You can even try out each of them before heading out on a quest by visiting the series’ all-new Training Room , included in the beta! Potions and other supplies will be provided on quests during the beta, but you’ll have to fetch your own food and drinks outside the game for those long gameplay sessions.
And one final note – this beta is just a taste for what the quests will look and feel like in the full game. The beta features a game currently in development and some aspects about balance may be different from the full game, but the satisfaction of tracking and bringing down a giant monster you’ll find is all there.

From his first debut back on December 17th, 1987, the iconic ‘bot has been a part of the gaming landscape and Capcom’s mascot for just shy of 30 years. Fans around the world have enjoyed Mega Man’s adventures in countless games and genres, and while the name “Mega Man” may represent a variety of different characters, it always means fun, challenging games, and a sense of justice and hope for the future. The Nintendo Switch versions of both games also include a number of unique features. Aim and fire with the Joy-Cons, or reload by making a motion like you’re readying a clip or magazine. Swing the Joy-Con to instantly use your knife, or shake off enemies by literally shaking your controller! It’s a fun and immersive new way to play, and makes great use of the built-in motion control capabilities of the Nintendo Switch.
Raid Mode is also included with both games, adding action-packed, arcade-style gameplay separate from each game’s main campaign. I am always massively impressed by AA cosplayers, but especially those who cosplay AJ:AA characters. I don’t know how you guys pull off the outrageous hairstyles, but you just keep getting better and better every year. Case in point:
In her post, Leigh says that this is just a test run, but wow, that hair and those eyebrows are so on point. I can just imagine this is what Apollo looks like with his red vest off, relaxing at home.
I love Saoto and melon-of-asgard’s Ema and Klavier. They capture the detective and prosecutor’s dynamic so well in just the way they look at each other. Also, I love the details on Ema’s Snackoos bag.
Cosplayer keirii is super cute as Trucy in this beautifully made costume. The colors are bright and lively and the realistic-looking Mr. Hat is amazing! I wonder if he was made of real wood. I can only imagine how heavy he would get if he was…!
It’s clear from these photos that devious-tofu and Foos both put a lot of work into their costumes, but it’s the attitude that really sells this mother-son mobster pair. devious-tofu captures Wocky’s serious and playful sides, while Foos shows you why you don’t mess with Little Plum. Extra shout out for the great attention to detail on Little Plum’s kimono. That kyubi fox is divine!
OK, so this isn’t technically cosplay, but I had to include this stunning ball gown designed by Sam. It’s clear from the design that he put a lot of thought into how to make it elegant while Trucy-esque. I especially love the sparkly detailing in the blue sheer fabric.

It’s no secret that the Ace Attorney community is also filled with extraordinarily talented artists who draw our favorite characters in all sorts of situations, from comical to dark – and even crossovers!
I have to admit that I am a huge fan of The World Ends With You (or TWEWY), so it made me giddy to find this stylish crossover. Oddly enough, I like that Apollo doesn’t have his tie on. I think it makes him fit in the TWEWY universe better. The Phoenix and Edgeworth are also stylistically sweet.
The very first time I saw this set, I couldn’t help but smile. There’s just something about the style and expressions on the characters faces that exude joy. Also, you can never go wrong with Phoenix being a smug bum. *grin*
Kristoph looking troubled? Who would’ve thought that he could be anything other than the “coolest defense in the West”?
I love this beautifully nuanced portrait of one of the most complex characters in the series. The more muted tones come together quite nicely while the skilled use of shadows and highlights brings out just enough to draw your attention to certain details without destroying the overall mood.
This looks like a promotional pic for the Gavinners. I can almost see the Gavinners’ logo and the “Guilty as Charged” tagline in big letters in the bottom-middle, right between the two of them. Daryan’s look of haughtiness is exactly what I’d expect him to give during a long photo shoot.
While I haven’t seen the movie Get Him to the Greek, which this is a parody of, I have to say it is fun to imagine what sort of movie this would turn out to be simply based on the way Apollo and Klavier are portrayed here. The sheer amount of doneness in Apollo’s face seems very appropriate here somehow…

With a series as renowned for its music as Ace Attorney, it’s always fun to hear what sorts of musical gems fans can produce from the games’ stellar tunes.
There are lots of mash-up remixes out there, but this one is pretty interesting in the way it plays with how Apollo and Klavier respond to the shifting melodies in the visuals. It’s almost as if they were actually fighting each other with their theme songs! I was also very pleasantly surprised by another element in this song that I will leave to you to discover for yourself.
I didn’t know that Trucy’s theme could be any more cheerful than it already is, but I was happy to be proven wrong by this magical remix. The bouncy beat will instantly grab you and keep you bopping along until the end, while the way the piano is played is just so darn… cute!
The Let’s Dub Project has always been amazing, but I was stunned to hear this beautiful rendition of The Guitar’s Serenade! I also love the Borginian accent Pinkshuchan gave to Lamiroir, since from her performance of Trucy, I’m guessing the accent is not a part of her normal speaking pattern. A true voice actress, indeed!
If the Gavinners were real, I can imagine them sounding just like this. This video also really shows off the phenomenal finger work necessary to pull off such a spectacular rendition. Bravo, Mr. Feral!
~ Fanfics ~
Some people rightfully called me out for not providing any fic recommendations last time . I think they thought I was disrespecting fic writing in general when nothing could be further from the truth. Most of my bookmarks are honestly of fics that I can’t post about on a blog like this for either the pairing involved (I can’t officially endorse any relationships not in the games) or the fic’s rating and/or content (the issues they deal with, etc.). I find that the most fascinating and well-written fics are sometimes the ones that explore some of the messiest elements of life, but I wanted to make up for the exclusion last time with a few AJ:AA G-rated, fan fics that I really love.
Premise: What happens when Phoenix and Trucy decide to tease Apollo and keep him out of their pillow fort?
When you need a teeth-rottingly fluffy fic to read, this is one that is sure to hit the spot. Especially if you’re as much of a sucker for Wright Anything Agency family fics as I am.
Premise: Klavier has a few insecurities when it comes to wearing glasses.
I really like the premise of this story, and the ending really punches you in the gut. As someone who wears glasses, I remember having insecurities of my own when I got my first pair, but nothing like Klavier.
Premise: Vera makes good on her promise in the end credits of the game and tries to open herself up to the world.
This fic is so good on so many levels. Not only is it paced well, it also deals with a serious issue in a realistic and sympathetic way. I felt as if I was on the same journey as Vera as I read this long fic. If you have the time, I cannot recommend this fic enough.
I guess technically this isn’t just for AJ:AA , but I have to give super props to all of the mods that write for this blog. I know it’s been a long journey for them, but they have always managed to keep the character replies spot on and in-character, which is no small feat! I daresay their replies to the wide range of questions they receive are small nuggets of art unto themselves.

Puzzle Fighter , available now , is an easy game to learn but difficult to master. The best Puzzle Fighters spend their lives in the dojo, training and honing their gem crashing abilities, but before you can take on the world you need to know the basics. If you’ve never played Puzzle Fighter before this guide will start you on the path to world domination.
In Puzzle Fighter you’ll be dealing with Gems .
A Gem is a square colored Red, Blue, Green or Yellow. They drop in pairs from the top of the screen and it’s your job to control where they fall by swiping left and right on your screen. Matching Gems of the same color together in square or rectangular arrangements will build Power Gems .
Power Gems can be any size rectangle from a 2×2 square upwards. The larger a Power Gem you create is, the more powerful the attack your characters will unleash when you break it.
To break your Gems and Power Gems you need a similar color (Red, Blue, Green or Yellow) Crash Orb . When a Crash Orb is matched with a Gem or Power Gem of the same color it sets off a chain reaction destroying all connected Gems of the same color.
You win the match by lowering your opponent’s Hit Points to zero by attacking with Crash Orbs and Special Moves. Each character has different attacks and Special Moves.
Another way to break Gems is with Diamonds . Diamonds are dropped every twenty-five (25) drops. When a Diamond lands on top of a Gem all Gems of that color on your board are destroyed. If the Diamond lands on the bottom of the game board without touching a Gem you’ll receive a Tech Bonus, which adds a charge to your Super Move .
Once your Super Move is charged hit that button and unleash a powerful attack on your opponent.

Court is back in session with A pollo Justice: Ace Attorney out now on Nintendo 3DS in North America! As with last week , we’re taking a look at some of the loveable characters that make up the world of AJ:AA . If you’re new to the franchise, just need a refresher, or see some familiar names from more recent 3DS entries like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies or Spirit of Justice, now is a great time to get caught up before diving into Apollo’s early court cases.
If you haven’t caught up on Apollo and Trucy yet, give that article a read before continuing! This time around it’s a trio of characters that will be central to finding the truth.
Even if you’re not that familiar with the Ace Attorney series, you likely know Phoenix for his bright blue suit, his rousing “ OBJECTION ,” and the pulse-pounding music that plays when you’re in pursuit of the truth. Having learned from the original Ace Attorney, his mentor and friend Mia Fey, Phoenix was a rising star in the courtroom, well-known for his ability to turn things around and secure a “not guilty” verdict in his endless pursuit of the truth. He never wavers in believing in the innocence of his clients.
Several years have passed since Phoenix’s debut in court, and it seems that he’s fallen on hard times. A court case gone wrong left Phoenix disbarred, unable to practice law and completely out of a job.
Fans know that a true attorney shows their badge to everyone they meet. Without his, Phoenix instead shows off his piano skills to everyone at an old Russian restaurant called the Borscht Bowl Club… though it turns out he’s a terrible piano player. It seems Phoenix’s miraculous luck and ability to turn things around still have their uses, as he’s a stellar poker player in the club’s back room. Even so, a strange twist of fate brings Phoenix back to the courtroom in the game’s first episode – this time not as a defender, but as a defendant. Phoenix has been accused of murder, and after calling his long-time friend and renowned defense attorney Kristoph Gavin for help, he settles on the younger and much more inexperienced Apollo Justice to take up his defense.
Just what does he see in Apollo, though? You’ll just have to play to find out!
Phoenix isn’t the only returning face, however. The original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney contains a case that takes place several months after the first four cases end. Bringing a new gameplay element to the table in the form of forensic investigation, it also introduced a high school girl who enlisted Phoenix’s help to defend her older sister, Lana Skye, in court. Seven years later, Ema Skye returns as a detective on the city’s police force! Ema’s plans hit a bit of a snag when she was assigned to be a detective instead of a forensic investigator, seeming to sour the sunny mood she had when she was younger. Initially stubborn in her approach to Apollo and Trucy, she softens up a bit and returns to her bright personality when it comes to her true love in life – forensics! Despite allegedly being on the side of the prosecution, Ema is always happy to look at the evidence scientifically, aiding Apollo and company during their investigations.
When she’s not eating her Snackoos, anyways.
Still, it’s not a great idea to get on Ema’s bad side. Quick to shut down and munch away on her bag of Snackoos (or “karintou” if you’ve been reading Janet’s localization blogs ), it seems like you have to catch her at just the right moment to get on her good side. And that’s not going to happen when there’s a certain “glimmerous fop” around.
If you just heard guitars wailing in your head the moment you read that last bit, then you know exactly who Klavier Gavin is. Compared to his brother, Kristoph Gavin, it seems like Klavier is the diametric opposite – while Kristoph is known as being “the coolest defense in the West” due to his calmness and ability to work under pressure, Klavier goes all-out with the rockstar attitude, including playing air guitar in the courtroom with accompanying music. For him it’s not just an act – it’s a way of life! His wild attitude and demeanor have earned him both adoration and ire, if Ema’s thoughts on him are anything to go off of. And while he has a bad tendency to talk down to Apollo and Trucy, he does seem a bit friendlier than the prosecutors Phoenix had to deal with in his time.
Klavier is also known for being the vocals and lead guitar of his aptly named band, the Gavineers, a group of musically inclined police and prosecution office agents currently on their “Guilty as Charged” tour. A fan of peppering his speech with German words and phrases, he seems to embody everything about the rockstar life. Fun fact: “Klavier” means “Piano” in German, which might be a nod to his musical roots. Considering he’s a guitar player, “Guitarren Gavin” may not have had the same impact.

Keeping with the spirit of the original release on Nintendo DS, this version of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney features updated artwork that takes advantage of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, giving the entire cast a crisp, clean look that helps bring their detailed animations to life. For those of you who have played before (or are fast readers), there’s a text skip option that allows you to skip nearly any text in the game by holding down the “B” button – even if you haven’t read it before! I’d highly suggest keeping it off, though, to see how the text and animation blend together to create that uniquely Ace Attorney presentation.
If you’ve been brushing up on your Japanese since the original release, you’ll be able to put it to use if you select the Japanese version of the game, available right from the main menu. You have access here to both Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney and the Japanese version, Gyakuten Saiban 4. That’s right – both games are included, so you can see all those interesting localization changes for yourself!
Classic courtroom gameplay, including pressing witnesses for more information and presenting evidence, are just some of the tricks Apollo has underneath his rolled-up sleeves. When Apollo’s bracelet restricts around his wrist, it’s a sign that the witness on the stand isn’t telling the truth. Apollo has a knack for knowing when someone’s lying, and when he’s on to them he can narrow in on their nervous tics or habits to catch them in their lie. It gives him a powerful edge when it comes to cross-examination! Outside of the courtroom, use forensic investigation to view objects from multiple angles, dust for fingerprints, and search for clues – scientifically!
Series veterans need no introduction to the wonderful and wacky cast of characters that you’ll come to know in the game, but for rookie attorneys, you can safely assume that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney will feature, well, Apollo Justice. A greenhorn defense attorney whose only experience so far is assisting his mentor, Klavier Gavin, in court, Apollo’s first case has him defending a surprising client. A former attorney and current piano player at the Borscht Bowl Club, the legendary Phoenix Wright has been accused of murder. It’s up to Apollo to take up the defense and clear the ex-attorney’s name.
You can also expect the colorful cast of characters that Ace Attorney games are known for! Blaming Peter Parker for the failure of his journalism career, former Daily Bugle reporter Eddie Brock bonded with a malevolent, symbiotic alien creature who had previously attempted to bond with Peter. United by the goal to destroy Spider-Man, they are the fearsome force known only as Venom!
Returning to the series with some of his signature moves, Venom’s aggressive playstyle is further amplified in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. His new movement option is Venom Glide, a web zip of sorts, which can be aimed in six different directions, enabling him to keep the pressure going in his favor.
