Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is out now! Court is back in session!

Sep 08, 2016 // Kellen Haney

Today’s the big day! Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice launches today on the Nintendo 3DS eShop across North America and Europe for $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99. The Ace Attorney series has always been known for its colorful cast, clever puzzles, witty writing, and courtroom drama, and Spirit of Justice is no exception. Check out the launch trailer above for a taste of what to anticipate in the latest entry in the courtroom drama, then hit the jump below for even more of what you can expect to see in the full game now and later in the month – including DLC costumes available today completely free until September 14th, 2016!

We’ve got some special DLC lined up for Spirit of Justice. First off are DLC costumes, free to download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop for those who purchase the game in the first week of release! This three-costume pack will definitely remind fans of previous games, with Apollo donning his old school uniform (from Dual Destinies), Athena sporting a waitress outfit from Trés Bien (first modeled by Maya in Trials and Tribulations), and Phoenix taking a few cues from loan shark Furio Tigre’s wardrobe (also from Trials and Tribulations). Or is it Xin Eohp? After September 14, the costumes will be available to purchase for $0.99 / £0.89 / €0.99.

You can find additional illustrations of the costumes here , as well.

That’s not all, though! Every Thursday throughout the end of September will see the release of even more Ace Attorney stories. Two “Asinine Attorney” episodes – short, zany stories that take place outside of the main game – will be making their debut, each bringing an exclusive and adorable pixel art 3DS theme in tow. There will also be a full-length case, Turnabout Time Traveler, which will mark the return of even more fan-favorite characters. Let’s just say there are a failed artist and a frilly cravat in your future. Or is it your past? Looks like you’re in for some old-school courtroom action, Mr. Wright.

To make it easy to plan ahead for, below we’ve laid out a handy list of the release dates and prices for each of the DLC releases this month. We’ll have more details for each DLC as their release dates come closer:

  • 9/15 – “Phoenix Wright: Asinine Attorney” short story and 3DS theme ($3.99 / £3.59 / €3.99)
  • 9/22 – “Apollo Justice: Asinine Attorney” short story and 3DS theme ( $3.99 / £3.59 / €3.99)
  • 9/29 – “Turnabout Time Traveler” full-length extra episode ($5.99 / £5.39 / €5.99)

If you haven’t been following the news about what the new game is all about or the locations visited in the game, or just need a refresher, Spirit of Justice features dual protagonists as two dramatic stories unfold around lawyers Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice of the Wright Anything Agency. While Phoenix travels to the Kingdom of Khura’in, navigating lawyerless courtrooms and the Divination Séance , Apollo Justice is tasked with holding down the fort at the Wright Anything Agency. Both attorneys face explosive implications in their stories as a legal revolution begins to boil over in Khura’in….

Since the game was first announced back in May, we’ve shown screenshots from the first and second episodes of the game. If you want a sneak peek at what you’ll see in episode three,  we’ve also got some screenshots from that case below. Don’t worry, no major spoilers here, just a taste here at the end of the blog post for you curious types!

We have a full gallery of screens here for those who are even more curious!

With so much ahead for Spirit of Justice, we’re sure nobody has a – say it with me now – OBJECTION! Be sure to stay tuned for more news by investigating the Ace Attorney Twitter and Facebook !

See What Urien Brings to the Table in the September Update!

Sep 07, 2016 // Harrison Young

Hello, Illuminati members!

As promised, this month will be bringing our final Season 1 DLC character, hit the jump to check out Urien the “Dominating Light.”

First introduced in Street Fighter III: 2 nd Impact, Urien is the Vice President of Illuminati and wants nothing but to take over Illuminati from his older brother, Gill, and destroy Shadaloo. Urien has complete confidence in his own physicality and this elitism shows itself through his sadistic and tyrannical tendencies. He gains joy only from dominating others and having them crumble in the face of his incredible power.

Urien returns to Street Fighter V, donning a pinstriped suit and is often seen with a sinister smile when he hits opponents with his powerful limbs and violent combos. He uses his slow moving projectiles to pressure opponents and get them to do his bidding. A master of manipulating ki, his signature Aegis Reflector, one of the 66 Illuminati secret arts, is back and allows him to control the pace of the match.

What does Urien think of M. Bison’s latest Shadaloo activities and Operation C.H.A.I.N.S.? Be sure to check out the free story DLC “A Shadow Falls” to find out!

V-Skill: Metallic Aura

Urien laughs maniacally while enveloping his body with his Metallic Aura. Once charged, his skin tone darkens and the next forward-propelling special move can temporarily absorb one attack.

V-Trigger: Aegis Reflector

Urien opens his arms and creates an energy barrier in front of him. The barrier will reflect projectiles back at the opponent and the direction held when activating the V-Trigger determines where it appears. Opponents who touch the barrier without blocking will take damage and be knocked back. With a full V-meter, Urien can project two barriers.

Critical Art: Dominate Crush

Urien channels energy into his arm and slams it into the ground, striking his opponent with a pillar of destruction.

The release date for Urien and the rest of the previously-announced September updates will be shared at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) next week.

A future post closer to release will provide details for the rest of the update, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter . #RiseUp!

Ace Trivia: Smorgasbord of Justice

Sep 03, 2016 // Janet Hsu

Well, here we are – less than one week away from the launch of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice on September 8th! I hope everyone’s been enjoying the Nintendo 3DS demo. If you haven’t tried it yet, *gasp* then what are you waiting for? A personal invitation?

Well, luckily, I have one of the game designers, Mr. Daigo, here today to tell us about what in this demo makes it extra special. Plus, I have some extra designer and cultural notes about Rayfa and Nahyuta’s designs, and other random trivia floating about, so pull up a chair and enjoy this week’s dev and loc blog!

 ————————————————————————

A Revolutionary Demo

Hi, everyone. I’m game designer Yoriki Daigo. I’m here today to talk about my long history of fighting to the death with the director, Mr. Yamazaki. I mean, considering how we first met…

What? I can’t talk about that?

It’s not interesting, and too graphic… Plus, there’s a downloadable demo on the Nintendo 3DS eShop to talk about? But what about all those people who’ve already tried the demo at events like E3, Anime Expo, and San Diego Comic-Con this year?

Well, actually…!

The downloadable demo is even better than the version you tried! We’ve powered it up with the following four things:

1)   A teaser trailer!

2)   The Dance of Devotion!

3)   Shah’do!

4)   The main game’s opening sequence!

Let’s take a closer look at each of these power ups.

1)   A teaser trailer!

Clear the demo to see an exclusive new trailer!

2)   The Dance of Devotion!

The downloadable demo features the sacred dance Rayfa performs at the beginning of each Divination Séance, which you can watch to your heart’s content.

But for those of you who’d rather hurry and get to the Divination Séance itself, fear not! We have made this scene skippable just for you.

3)   Shah’do!

This lovable little doggie, Shah’do, makes an appearance in the downloadable demo. Just when he makes his appearance is something you’ll have to play to find out!

4)   The main game’s opening sequence!

We’ve added both the full game’s opening anime and Episode 1’s opening to the demo.

(From the opening anime for Spirit of Justice)

(From the Episode 1 opening in Spirit of Justice)

Speaking of the Episode 1 opening, Mr. Yamazaki had a big smile on his face one day when he came up to me and said…

Yamazaki: “So, I had this amazing thought…”

Daigo: “And?”

Yamazaki: “And I was thinking we could have a bunch of different images appear on the surface of the treasure box in the opening sequence.”

Daigo: “Hey, that’s not a bad idea!”

I gathered the art designers and programmers at once, and they told me that as long as it wasn’t in 3D, they could probably make some sort of movie of what he was envisioning.

Daigo: “They said they’ll probably be able to pull it off, but it might be tough if it’s in 3D.”

Yamazaki: “What? But the game’s on the Nintendo 3DS, so it should be in 3D.”

Daigo & designers & programmers: “Gnarrrrgh!”

There was blood pouring from the designers and programmers’ eyes. At this rate, I was afraid that the last thing I’d see in this world was going to be my fellow team members as they descended on me. However, everyone agreed that it would be better to have the opening be in 3D. And so, they went about trying to figure out how to do it. They figured that if they could get pictures to appear on a still box, then they could probably find a way to make it 3D. That’s when Mr. Yamazaki said…

Yamazaki: “Um… Can we make this box rotate somehow?”

Daigo & designers & programmers: “NoooooOOOOOOOOOO(screen flash) oooooOOOOooooooooooo!(*smack* *smack* *break*)”

Everyone had a mini-breakdown all at once, but this talented team wasn’t about to be beaten. We all agreed it would be cool to have the treasure box spin, so, even though I have no idea how they did it, the art designers and programmers worked together and managed to make the box turn – and in 3D. I couldn’t believe it.

I… I was saved! No one would need to divine what had happened to me through a Divination Séance! Or so I thought, because Mr. Yamazaki just couldn’t be stopped!

Yamazaki: “Um… Actually… do you think you could…

“…make the box look like it’s is coming out of the picture in this scroll?”

Nngh…

NNNNGGGGHHHOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!!

It’s time for a revolution!

And that’s how the evil Mr. Yamazaki was overthrown and how peace came to the Spirit of Justice team☆

…Huh. Well, what do you know? My story somehow ended up being about how Mr. Yamazaki and I fought to the death anyway!

In any case, I hope you’ll check out how the spinning box turned out for yourself in the opening of the downloadable demo for Nintendo 3DS.

*This entry is a work of fiction. The characters of “the evil Mr. Yamazaki,” “the designers,” “the programmers,” and “Daigo” are in no way related to their real-life counterparts – in fact, we’re actually all very good friends. Furthermore, all of the ideas discussed above were given by the dev team as a whole.

However…

The fact that we kept refining features like this in order to make something even better IS NOT A WORK OF FICTION!

Yamazaki: “…You know, I don’t mind that you made me out to be the bad guy in this, but… isn’t this entire entry structured almost exactly like the one you wrote for Dual Destinies ? Plus, isn’t the whole “rebelling against some crazy impossible task” thing exactly the same as my entry ? Hmph, not one for originality, are you? Heh heh heh.

Daigo: “Aaaaaaaaaargh… You want me to revolutionize your face?!”

Yamazaki: “Aaaaaaah! Wait, did you just steal tha…rgh…”

And that is how I disposed of the evil Mr. Yamazaki. *laugh*

—————————————————

Well, uh… thanks, Mr. Daigo… But I thought you guys were all “very good friends”? Still, that was quite the tale of technical woe, but the end result was definitely worth it. I remember being wowed by it the first time I saw it for myself. It also set the tone perfectly for the mysterious Kingdom of Khura’in.

Speaking of Khura’in, I’d like to share some trivia about Rayfa and Nahyuta’s earlier and final designs that I dug out of Mr. Fuse (I actually just stopped him as he was on his way home today again… Sorry, Mr. Fuse! And thanks for being such a good sport!).

Even in her earlier designs (right), you can see that Rayfa was meant to be a full-on priestess, but as the game’s story began to take shape, Rayfa also became the princess of Khura’in. Mr. Fuse added a few elements to denote this aspect of her character with her tiara and regal sleeves. In addition to wanting Rayfa to have a unique hairstyle, her hair was designed in a manner that is reminiscent of Queen Himiko , complete with large loops of hair. This sort of looped hairstyle is also meant to be a reflection of the halo of Khura’inism’s founder, the Holy Mother in the in-game world, as well as a link to the unique hair styles of Maya and Pearl Fey.

Her pink dress also underwent some changes and the final outfit is designed after dancer’s clothes since performing the Dance of Devotion is a key part of her job as the royal priestess.

Monk with khakkhara (left), miko priestesses with kagura suzu bells (right)

The staff that Rayfa carries is another clue that she’s a religious figure, and is fashioned after khakkhara or “Buddhist monk staves” , but that’s not the only clue.

The bells around Rayfa’s wrists are based on Japanese suzu bells, which are common at Shinto shrines and also in Shinto ceremonies. As with Buddhism, the jingling sound of a suzu bell is associated with spiritual power. Japanese miko (priestess) and their sacred kagura dances are also linked with the sound of bells. In fact, it’s almost impossible to say “ miko ” and not think of the sound of suzu bells.

Lastly, besides being like the ribbons on the kagura suzu a miko carries, the long ribbon between Rayfa’s arms is meant to make her look like a Khura’inese butterfly, and serves to reinforce her role within Khura’inism.

A Khura’inese butterfly on a lotus flower. Note how the wing tips are attached at the bottom.

When it comes to prosecutors, there is always a certain look that Mr. Fuse tries to achieve. As he talked about back when he was designing Simon Blackquill , an Ace Attorney prosecutor has to have a certain look, and it usually involves a suit or some other type of Western clothing. In this case, Nahyuta’s white jacket is based off of a traditional type of Indian clothing known as sherwani (especially fancy wedding ones) mixed with an English frock coat.

We talk a lot about how Nahyuta is not just a prosecutor, but that he is also a devout monk of Khura’inism, but how is that reflected in his design? There are actually a few interesting design elements with meanings you may not be aware of.

The first most obvious thing is his floating scarf. While it may seem like a silly piece of fabric, it’s actually another Japanese cultural shorthand that conveys Nahyuta’s holiness and suggests that he is like a god. These scarf-like things are called hagoromo (羽衣, lit: feather clothes) in Japanese, and are worn by Buddhist celestial beings known as tennin and deities such as Nio .

Tennin (left), a Nio (right)

Hagoromo are the celestial clothing that allows these deities to fly, so in a sense, a character wearing hagoromo is not unlike a character with a pair of angel wings in the West.

Speaking of divinity, Nahyuta’s overall character design is very gender neutral, or as Mr. Fuse likes to say, Nahyuta has transcended gender. The team had originally meant for Nahyuta to be whatever gender the player wanted him to be. This aspect of his appearance is also rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism, where a number of deities and gods are either genderless or are portrayed as both genders at once or as alternating between male and female depending on the depiction. As you can see from one of the earlier versions of his design, he was more feminine at one point, so in order to bring him truly to the center of the spectrum, he was given slightly broader shoulders and a slightly more masculine face.

Lastly, there is one more hint to his personality in his design: the prayer beads necklace he wears around his neck. Incidentally, it consists of 48 beads.

And now, some bonus trivia!

  • If you look really closely, the geometric design on Payne’s sash is actually the first character of his Japanese name, 亜内 (auchi). I guess his new clothes are just as tacky as the man wearing them.
  • Shah’do is said to be a red Tibetan mastiff. If you know anything about how big Tibetan mastiffs get, you know that Shah’do is still just a happy little puppy.
  • The little tuft of hair on the top of Ahlbi’s head is meant to resemble Maya’s top knot, and shows a point of intersection between the cultures of the Kingdom of Khura’in and Kurain Village. There are a number of these shared traits between the cultures of Khura’in and Kurain Village sprinkled throughout the game and in the designs of the characters, so keep your eyes peeled as you play and see how many you can find!

  • Words like “Your Benevolence” and “Your Magistry” are titles we use to substitute for the fact that in English, you call people by titles to show rank and respect. The word “magistry” is not a real word, but a mashup we created of “majesty” and “magistrate” to give the judge an aura of authority in his courtroom.
  • We also use the word “accused” instead of “defendant” in the Khura’inese courtroom since it’s kinda hard to be a defendant if you’re guilty until proven innocent, and there are no lawyers around to, you know, defend you. There are other special names and titles like these that we’ve applied to the Khura’inese court system and culture that are mostly to help flesh out the world a little.
  • And finally, there seems to be some confusion as to where the Kingdom of Khura’in is, with some people thinking it’s in the Middle East! But while it seems like a paradox, this magic trick is quite easy to solve with the help of our friend Klavier Gavin.

Athena: ã‚ï¼ç‰’ç‰ã®ã‚µã‚¤ãƒ³ã ï¼ (A! Garyu no sain da!)

“Oh, サイン (sain)!” you might say. That’s the English word “sign”! Well, let’s see what happens if you translate that sentence as “Ah! It’s a Klavier sign!”

*Gavinners’ tour poster courtesy of 10 minutes and my mad 1999-era photoshopping skillz.

Not exactly the result we were looking for, right? So what’s going on?

This is an example of translating without cultural context. Without considering how a word is used within a specific culture, it’s easy to accidentally convey the entirely wrong idea to your target audience. (Heck, this even happens between British and American English with words like “lift” vs. “elevator” and “torch” vs. “flashlight.”) In this case, the sentence should’ve been translated as “Ah! It’s Klavier’s autograph!” Had Athena been talking about the actual sign, she would’ve said çœ‹æ¿ (kanban) instead since sain is only used to mean either an autograph or signature, a mathematical sine, or some sort of cue, like a sign or a signal a baseball catcher might give a pitcher.

How does this relate to why アジアã®è¥¿ã®æžœã¦ (ajia no nishi no hate – lit: western edge of Asia) is officially translated in English as “the western edge of the Far East?” Because I wanted to more accurately convey where Khura’in is based on how the Japanese word ajia (アジア) is used.

It’s understood among Japanese speakers that when ajia is used in daily life, and even on TV news broadcasts, they are only talking about the countries of East Asia – Japan, Korea, China, and Mongolia. As Wikipedia writers even pointed out :

日本ã§ã¯é€†ã«ã€ã—ã°ã—ã°ä¸è¿‘æ±ãªã‚‰ã³ã«ä¸å¤®ã‚¢ã‚¸ã‚¢ã‚„å—アジアをå«ã‚ãšã€æ¥µç«¯ãªå ´åˆã«ã¯æ±å—アジアも钤ã„ãŸæ±ã‚¢ã‚¸ã‚¢ã®ã¿ã‚’ã-ã’ã“ã¨ãŒã‚る。

“In contrast [to other cultures’ understandings], the general understanding in Japan is that ajia frequently does not include the Middle East, nor does it include areas like Central Asia or South Asia. In extreme cases, it doesn’t include Southeast Asia either, and only denotes the countries of East Asia.”

So it turns out that the original intention of the Japanese description that was meant to be read and interpreted by a Japanese audience is only unambiguously accurate when translated as “the western edge of the Far East/East Asia,” and not “the western edge of Asia,” since even in English, the colloquial usage of “Asia” can vary from person to person and culture to culture to include (or not include) countries such as Turkey or regions such as Central Asia.

But there’s actually another reason why a Japanese person would immediately think of the Himalayas and of India in conjunction with a religion like Khura’inism: the exoticism and mystery of India as the birthplace of one of the major religions of Japan – Buddhism – and the pervasiveness of stories like Journey to the West in the Japanese collective conscious.

Much as how American Christians, Jews, and Muslims think of Jerusalem as the exotic and foreign birthplace of their religions, an element of mysticism has been infused with the Japanese people’s image of India through Japanese pop culture and immensely influential works like Journey to the West (西éŠè¨˜, pinyin: XÄ« Yóu Jì) or “ Saiyuki ” as it’s transliterated in Japanese (no, not that “ Saiyuki…), which is the story of a monk and his supernatural companions who are on a journey to retrieve some sacred Buddhist scriptures from the Western Regions (or what one might say is “the western edge of the Far East”).

India has pretty much always been considered “non-Asian” to the Japanese, since Japanese culture was historically influenced primarily by Chinese culture. So from the Japanese perspective, Indian culture is a familiar, yet utterly different and unique one compared to their own. As a comparison, think about how ancient Greek culture is one step removed from American culture, which is European influenced – it’s familiar because we know their gods and legends, like Hercules, but just far away enough through space and time for it to seem exotic.

But ultimately, the reason why I know for sure that Khura’in is on the western edge of the Far East is because I spoke with Mr. Yamazaki and Mr. Fuse to confirm that that is actual region they meant to convey to their audience.

Ace Attorney Character Profiles: Ema and Forensics

Sep 01, 2016 // Kellen Haney

For our final character profile, we’re doing something a little different from the two-character format we’ve been doing. This time around, we’re talking about Ema Skye and her one true love: forensics! Learn more about the newly certified forensics investigator, as well as the forensics gameplay you’ll get to see in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice !

Ema made her debut in the final episode of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as a cheery high school girl fascinated by science and forensics, including a serious desire to dust everything she could get her hands on for fingerprints! Raised primarily by her older sister and former Chief Prosecutor, Lana Skye, Ema first crossed paths with Phoenix Wright when Lana was accused of murder. Believing in her sister’s innocence, Ema tracked down the Fey & Co. Law Offices hoping to meet Mia Fey, but ended up meeting Phoenix instead. Drawing parallels between Ema and Maya’s care for their older sisters, Phoenix agreed to take up Lana’s defense. Throughout Phoenix’s investigation, Ema’s love of forensics was crucial in both solving the case and discovering the identity of the true murderer. It was also what helped to expose corruption in both the police and prosecutor’s offices, and prove Lana’s innocence.  With her sister cleared of murder charges, Ema set her sights on turning her hobby into a career as a forensic investigator, and went on to study abroad in Europe.

Does… does that bag ever run out?
(Ema in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney )

Several in-universe years later, Ema was also instrumental in helping out Apollo with a number of cases during the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. After returning to the United States, Ema set her sights on the test to become a forensics investigator. However, despite multiple attempts, she was unable to pass the test, resulting in her assignment to criminal affairs as a homicide detective. While this turn of events seemed to have soured her once cheery mood considerably, Ema always perked up at any chance to use her forensics skills to help with Apollo’s investigations, often helping out the fledgling attorney with finding evidence that may otherwise have been missed.

Now, about two years later…

(Ema in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

Ema has finally passed the test, and achieved her life-long dream of joining the forensics team! Proudly wearing the arm band signifying her position, Ema has said “goodbye” to the chocolate Snackoos (her favorite snack food), stress, and mail-order forensic kits that defined her time in criminal affairs… though she admits she still likes to do forensics on the side as a hobby. Guess those life-long habits are a little hard to break, huh? Thanks to her new role in the department, Ema has returned to a much more cheerful disposition, and is more than willing to help the lawyers of the Wright Anything Agency. In fact, even though she’s the lead investigator on Trucy’s case , she doesn’t seem to think that Trucy could have committed the crime at all.

It’s time to get scientific.
(Ema in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

Of course, with Ema returning, you can count on forensics gameplay making a return as well! Forensics were first introduced in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney alongside Ema, and, much like Ema, offers a different approach to evidence. Forensics gives you a new set of tools to work with, such as investigating objects in 3D, allowing you to view evidence from all angles. This is particularly important when you’re working with Ema to carefully dust evidence for fingerprints and then blow the dust off to search for clues.  Once you’ve found some solid prints, you can scan them to find out who the owner is as evidence! There’s more forensics gameplay in the full game, but you’ll just have to play it for yourself to find out what else you can do.

Forensics, the most beloved Ace Attorney character, at work.
(From Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

Oh, and before I forget, it sounds like Nahyuta might not be the only one traveling between America and the Kingdom of Khura’in. Maybe Ema will need those Snackoos after all.

That’s all for our series of character profiles for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice! The full game will be out this time next week on Thursday, September 8th!  I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these profiles, and that they were a good read for not only the aces who have been there from the beginning, but also series greenhorns and those of you that just needed to dust off your badge with a refresher course on some of the many memorable characters of Ace Attorney, old and new. Ace Attorney Character Profiles: Trucy Wright and Bonny de Famme

Aug 30, 2016 // Kellen Haney

Today in our series of character profiles leading up to the release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice on September 8th, it’s all about the magic of the stage with Trucy Wright and her magic show assistant, Bonny de Famme! Let’s take a peek behind the curtain, shall we?

When we first meet Trucy during the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney , Trucy used her illusions and tricks to keep the Wright Talent Agency (formerly the Wright & Co. Law Offices) afloat during challenging times.  While Phoenix played the piano (poorly) at the Borsht Bowl Club, Trucy was busy putting on magic shows at the Wonder Bar. At least some of Trucy’s natural talent can be traced back to her being the sole heir to the legacy of Troupe Gramarye, a well-known troupe of magicians who disbanded under unfortunate circumstances.

I, uh… no?
(Trucy Wright in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney )

When Apollo joined the Wright Talent Agency, Trucy immediately billed “Polly” as her magician’s assistant (despite Trucy helping Apollo through a number of investigations and court trials), and the two have worked closely together ever since. While Apollo may protest being the centerpiece of Trucy’s more dangerous illusions, it seems like there’s a strong bond between the two of them.

Keep your attorney’s badge away from her at all costs.
(Trucy Wright in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

When we catch up with Trucy in Spirit of Justice, she’s finally realized her life-long dream and has been preparing to open her first major magic show: Trucy in Gramarye-Land! Full of the sorts of amazing tricks and dazzling illusions that the Gramarye name is known for, Trucy has been practicing day and night for weeks to debut her show, all while continuing her studies by day in high school. Unfortunately, disaster strikes when a routine sword trick ends with the motionless body of Mr. Reus, one of the performers in the show, tumbling out of a coffin in front of a live audience! Things look grim for Trucy, but perhaps the Wright Anything Agency can work their own magic to prove what really happened. Luckily, Trucy’s stage assistant, Bonny de Famme, is ready to help!

(Bonny de Famme in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

A fledgling magician in her own right, Bonny is both Trucy’s assistant as well as one of her biggest fans, hopping at the chance to talk about Trucy’s illusions and how big of an influence she’s been on Bonny’s own magic. She seems genuinely excited about being a part of Trucy’s big debut, and would do anything to help out her idol on or off the stage.

As if her adorable bunny motif wasn’t enough, she also has a particularly spectacular trick in her repertoire; she’s able to teleport from one spot to another! This magician is already well on her way to stardom thanks to her illusions and sharing the stage with Trucy. A magician never shares her secrets, of course, but Bonny’s tricks certainly make you curious, and being present during the on-stage disaster makes her an important witness in Trucy’s trial.  Even so, could this bunny be hiding secrets deeper than her magic and illusions? You’ll just have to play Spirit of Justice to see for yourself!

(From Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice )

We’ve just about wrapped up our character profiles, but we have one last character to talk about next time, and her favorite hobby – scientifically speaking, of course. Ema Skye is up next on Thursday! Don’t forget, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is just around the corner, and will be available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop September 8th, 2016!

Resident Evil 4 is available today for Xbox One and PlayStation 4

Aug 30, 2016 // Kellen Haney

Today’s the day – Resident Evil 4 is available now, joining Resident Evil 5 and 6 as digital downloads and physical discs on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for just $19.99 (USD) each! Regardless of if you’re a series veteran or brand-new to these titles, all three modern hits in the Resident Evil series have been re-released and are available now!

In Resident Evil 4, join Leon S. Kennedy as he navigates the European countryside, fending off the attacks of local villagers infected by Las Plagas while searching for the President’s daughter, Ashley Graham. Infected villagers aren’t the only enemies Leon will need to watch out for, with all kinds of deadly foes on the prowl. Expect series staples, such as infected dogs, as well as infamous foes such as the chainsaw-wielding Dr. Salvador. As Resident Evil veterans know, Resident Evil 4 was the first in the series to introduce an over-the-shoulder camera to aim with pin-point accuracy, allowing players to stun their enemies before delivering crushing finishing blows. Be sure to aim for weak points on mutated monstrosities and bosses to inflict punishing amounts of damage, or trigger special events to deliver powerful attacks!

There’s plenty of bonus content to enjoy once Leon’s completed his rescue mission as well. The “Separate Ways” campaign puts you in control of series mainstay Ada Wong as she completes her own mission, parallel to the events of Resident Evil 4. The Mercenaries mode pits you against hordes of enemies, with the aim of earning a high score with various characters and loadouts. Looking for a challenge? Play through the main campaign again in Professional mode, a tough-as-nails difficulty with stronger enemies! In addition, you’ll also have access to two new bonus costumes each for Leon and Ashley that can be used in either the main campaign or Professional mode. There’s plenty here for both newcomers and long-time fans!

With Resident Evil 4 out now, you can live (or relive) through the horror that defined a generation. Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 are all available now as both a digital download and physical disc on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for $19.99 (USD)! Plus, watch our very own Tim Turi as he reunites with the Game Informer staff in their Super Replay of Resident Evil 4 !

Visual Design, Special Effects, and Localization – Oh, My!

Aug 27, 2016 // Janet Hsu

Welcome to the third in our series of development and localization blogs. Last time , we discovered one of Rayfa’s early designs, heard about how the team arrived at the look of the Kingdom of Khura’in, and how the Khura’inese language was Romanized for the English version. This time, we’ll be continuing our tour of all things graphical with a look at the UI and the game’s many visual effects.

But before we do, just a quick reminder that the demo for Spirit of Justice is out RIGHT NOW on the Nintendo eShop! Be sure to check it out if you haven’t already!

Now, for those of you who have played the demo, you saw for yourselves how there are many aspects of the user interface, or “UI,” that are different from what we’re used to, aren’t there? I’ll let Ms. Nakano share with us why that is. Take it away, Ms. Nakano!

 ———————————————————-

  Of Lettering and Fonts

Hello! I’m UI designer Reiko Nakano. As a UI designer, it is my job to create the layout and look of anything that conveys information about the gameplay to you, the player. This includes the title screen you see at the very beginning when you start the game, to the menus, Court Record, and dialogue text windows that you use and see all throughout the game, and even to the game’s credits at the very end.

But it’s not all about how pleasing everything looks – my work requires that I work closely with the game designers and the director to figure out how the different screens will transition into one another, and what kind of layout (like where should what kind of button go for ease of playability, etc.) would be best suited to the gameplay experience we want to achieve.

UI design is directly connected to how a game plays and how easy it is to navigate, so it’s a suuuuper important aspect of any game, but I fear this entry will get quite boring if I go into too much detail about it So instead, let’s talk about what I hope will be a bit more fun of a topic: this game’s font design.

Compared to Dual Destinies, Spirit of Justice uses a ton more fonts. There are two main reasons for this.

The first is because there are two courtrooms, one in each country.

Director Yamazaki and Art Director Fuse: “We reeeally want each court to have its own Guilty and Not Guilty designs.”

Nakano: (*゚▽゚) “Okay!!!”

Yamazaki and Fuse: “Ooh, and let’s have different designs for the Witness Testimony and Cross-Examination bits, too.”

Nakano: ( ゚∀゚) “Okay!”

Yamazaki and Fuse: “And wouldn’t it be great to have different opening sequences for each country’s trials, too?”

Nakano: ( ゚v゚) “Okay.”

Yamazaki and Fuse: “And of course, we have to have different life bars!”

Nakano: ( ゚-゚) “O-Okay…”

That may or may not have been exactly how it really went, but the important thing is that we ended up needing two different UI designs for the trial sections.

Well, what do you think of the two different Witness Testimony designs? There’s the usual no-frills version on the left and the mysterious and exotic Asian version on the right. They both suit the atmosphere of each country’s courtroom pretty well, don’t you think?

By the way, the font that’s used for the Khura’in trial section is an original font created by our team’s UI designers.

So you see, even the fonts we use are a window into the world of Ace Attorney.

******************************

The second reason why we had to use a lot more fonts this time around is because of the new Divination Séance gameplay system.

I know there are probably a lot of you who have played the demo for yourselves, but this new, mildly spine-tingling gameplay system shows the sensations a person experienced during the final moments of their life through video and text.

“Huh?! Show different sensations through text…? You mean like “hot,” “loud,” “delicious” – those kinds of sensations – through text…?” I asked.

Game Designer Mr. Daigo: “You got it!!”

…What a tall order that turned out to be.

The gameplay system presents what the victim experienced with all five senses as a video to the player, who then uses it to unravel the mystery. This meant that other than sight, all of the other senses would have to somehow be represented through text. This necessitated that the kanji characters themselves convey and conjure up the specific feelings and nuances associated with each sensation.

Let’s take a look at this picture for a concrete example of what I mean.

The characters on the left for “pain” (ç—›ã„) are what are actually used in the game. Because this word is supposed to represent the sharp pain the victim felt just before they died, it had to look super painful as well in order to convey that sensation to the player.

The characters on the right are… how should I describe them…? It looks like the sort of lettering that would be used to represent the victim bumping into a new transfer student who’s munching on a piece of breakfast toast as they round a street corner. The font has a sort of pop, sweet-and-sour feel to it.

I picked two very different fonts so it would be easier to see the difference, but you can see how even though they both say “pain,” the font on the left conveys the true severity of the pain much better than the font on the right.

And that’s how it came to be that we used a bunch of different fonts to convey a variety of feelings and sensations through the kanji characters in the Divination Séances. In creating these characters and deciding which font to use to convey what, I relied on my personal judgment and biases… No, actually, I made myself feel what each victim must’ve felt.

For those of you who are really into fonts, it might be fun to try to guess them all after you’ve finished playing the game.

Speaking of being really into fonts, during the latter half of the game’s development, there was this one person who had an objection to one of the fonts I’d picked for the Divination Séance.

Fukuda: “Um… The font for this sensation… It’s not exactly what I had in mind, so do you think you can fix that for me?”

It was the uncompromising Mr. Fukuda of the writing team! I guess I should’ve expected as much from the one who came up with that scene in the first place.

And so you see, there’s a lot of careful thought and consideration (and blood and tears…) that’s hiding there right in front of you – it’s even in the letters and characters we normally take for granted. Nothing would make me happier than if you could feel the work we put into this game coming from each pixel of the screen!

———————————————————-

Thank you, Ms. Nakano! There were definitely a lot of different fonts this time around, and I’ll get into how we localized all of those sensations in the Divination Séance in a little bit (It was no small task, let me tell you!). For now, I want to share with you how we created a second set of UI for the Khura’inese court in the localized version with two examples.

First, let’s take a look at the Witness Testimony intro.

Before we arrived at the final English version on the right, Ms. Nakano put together a few different rough ideas like these.

Among the options we considered were a variation on the wooden panels look (1), a more traditional AA look colored in the Khura’inese court version’s style (2), a completely traditional AA look, including the usual blue and white colors (3), and a subtitled look (4).

Eventually, we chose to use option 4 as a starting point for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it allows the player to see the witness’s face. We completed the design by turning the Japanese into Khura’inese letters (these are localized version exclusives!), picking a more suitable font for “Witness Testimony” to go with the Khura’inese letters, and making the scroll into more of a tasseled banner so it would fit in with the ribbons and tasseled decorations motif of the Khura’inese courtroom better.

As for what happens when you get a game over…

This time, we also started out with a few options, including these below.

As you can see, because of the letter “y”, the one giant panel version (1) wasn’t exactly very pretty, and standard font #107 with normal AA style coloring (2) was kind of plain, too, but Khura’inese-flavored custom font (3) hit all the right notes. As we were iterating on the font, we also realized that in order to lend the word “Guilty” any weight visually, it would have to be bigger and the letters would have to be thicker, so sadly, the final design ended up covering the poor judge’s face. But the tweaks we made definitely makes the word look more foreboding than in the original concept design, doesn’t it?

Now, as I promised, I will get into how we localized the UI text for the Divination Séances, but before that, there’s something else you should know – how the visual effects for the Pool of Souls were created. Luckily, I have just the person to tell us about that! Ms. Akizuki, the floor is all yours!

———————————————————-

On Creating Visual Effects

Hi, I’m Chieko Akizuki, and I’m the lead effects artist for Spirit of Justice. Nice to meet you.

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear “visual effects” in the context of games? Do you think of magic and explosions? Roaring flames, columns of water, or even lightning bolts?

Well, my work on Spirit of Justice consisted of… gathering fruits and vegetables from the mountains near my house and giving them to those younger team members who were living all alone – or to those who just didn’t get enough vegetables in their diet – and keeping the snacks table stocked each and every week with a mountain of delights. The most popular snacks on the team are sweet manju [red bean cakes/buns] and savory senbei [Japanese rice crackers]!

Just kidding.

(But not really.)

…Anyway!

The basic gist of my job is to design the look of something in motion, regardless if the visual effect representing that movement is actually visible or invisible to the naked eye.

Have you tried the demo yet? If you have, then you’ve seen that one of the features of this game is the Kingdom of Khura’in – a country where even the average person’s daily life is closely tied to the art of spirit channeling. Trials in Khura’in are conducted via a special rite called the Divination Séance, whereby the royal priestess performs the Dance of Devotion and channels the last memories of the dead into the Pool of Souls. As an example of what I do, I’d like to talk a little more in depth today about the visual effects for this Divination Séance.

There were a bunch of different ideas floating around before we settled on the idea of having the victim’s memories appear in a pool of water. Having the victim’s spirit possess a puppet, and even using the smoke from giant incense burners to reenacting the crimes through shadow plays were just two of the ideas we had, but the rest of them were all equally as supernaturally eerie and unsettling.

However, more than anything else, the Divination Séance had to be a solid gameplay system. So, naturally, anything that wasn’t fun to play and interact with didn’t make the cut. Once we had settled on using a pool of water, that’s when the real work started for me.

The task before me was to design the visual effects for a mystical pool with a touch of the occult in the form of spirit channeling that would fit into the world of Ace Attorney. I had to consider that, as an interactive gameplay element, the Séance vision was going to be shown as appearing in a pool of water that also acts as a mirror. At the same time, words representing the other four sensations were going to come and go in the water as the story dictated, so there was a need to make sure they would be reasonably legible. I looked at so many pictures and watched so many videos of the sea, swimming pools, ponds, and lakes, and tried to apply the Ace Attorney style to my designs. After many, many failed attempts, this is what I finally came up with.

Were you able to catch a glimpse of the pool in the video? (It’s at around the 0:42 mark.)

Here’s a special look at the Pool of Souls from another angle. Ordinarily, the pool looks all calm like the picture on the left, but when it’s been charged up with spiritual power (and visual effects), it looks like the picture on the right!

So, what do you think? This is how I make the invisible, yet wondrous and mysterious powers that exist in the world the director and the art director envisioned, visible. In fact…

… there are a ton of other scenes where my visual effects were used to add a punch to what’s going on in the scene. And I’m not sure if it’s because this is Ace Attorney, but… I bet you’ll be surprised to know that while there are some scenes I made look good through visual effects, there are others that you’d expect to have been, but weren’t. But I’m afraid I’ll have to tell you more about them some other time…

And that about does it for the visual effects of Spirit of Justice. It would make me really happy if you took note of them as you played. On that note, I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of these blogs.

———————————————————-

Thank you, Ms. Akizuki! The world of Ace Attorney would certainly be a lot less magical without your special effects! Having seen some of those other scenes without the visual effects layered on top, it really goes to show how important these extra touches are to completing the atmosphere of any given scene.

As for the Divination Séance, localizing it involved a lot of teamwork between me and Ms. Kobayashi, the lead UI designer for the localized version, but Ms. Nakano and Ms. Akizuki’s work on the Japanese version were surprisingly big factors in how we adapted the fonts, and even the translations themselves!

As Ms. Nakano explained, the first step was to make sure that the look of the fonts used to express each sensation matched with the feeling they were supposed to invoke. But in the case of English, this meant that Ms. Kobayashi had to not only choose a good font, but also figure out the layout of the letters. Take the words “pain” and “incense” as an example.

The individual letters of the word “pain” could’ve been lined up in an infinite number of ways, but this arrangement where each letter is off-center and doing its own thing is perfectly suited to the disorienting feeling of intense pain. Compare that with the word “incense” where the uniform spacing between the letters and the overall curved shape of the word forms an image of the scent of sandalwood wafting to the victim’s nose on a breeze.

Another thing you may notice is that the length of the words is rather short, and even whole words have been dropped, like “the smell of incense” (ãŠé¦’ã®åŒ‚ã„) becoming just “incense.” This is for two reasons.

1)   The English had to fit within the same space as the Japanese graphic. This is so that crucial parts of the video would not accidentally be covered up, rendering the puzzle unsolvable.

2)   The pool’s rippling effect gets stronger the further out towards the edge you go, so the words become increasingly blurrier and harder to read. Try to cram in too many letters and each letter has to be smaller, rendering all of them an illegible mess if we were not careful.

So thanks to Ms. Akizuki’s nifty water effect, Ms. Kobayashi and I had to tweak and re-tweak these words a number of times to make sure they were all reasonably legible on a Nintendo 3DS screen. But thanks to Ms. Nakano color-coding each type of sensation and also making that info appear when you cursor over a word, at least I could cut redundant words like “smell” from the translation. In the end, I hope you’ll agree that we managed to adapt the Divination Séance’s lettering to the English language well.

All right, that’s enough out of me for one week. Join me next Friday for some more tales from the trenches, courtesy of game designer Mr. Daigo, and even some Spirit of Justice character design and English version world building trivia!

Until then!
