Proto Man wearable helmet pre-orders available now at the Capcom Store!

Jul 19, 2016 // Kellen Haney

Now, I know you saw that helmet up there and are looking for some sort of buy button to mash your wallet against. There’s no need for wallet-based mishaps – click here to head over to the Capcom Store and pre-order your very own Proto Man helmet! Plus, if you’re heading to San Diego Comic-Con, you’ll also have the chance to see the helmet yourself alongside the other great products and activities that we’ll have at the show! Need more information? Just hit the screen transition – er, “Read More” button below.

Proto Man always seemed like a cool anti-hero compared to Mega Man. Sure, they may have similar helmets, but Proto Man has shades built right into his, and a stylish pattern on the front! That’s not only cool, but also radical, and maybe even a bit tubular. I promise I won’t use any of those words anymore. Let’s get right into the details about the helmet itself:

  • Designed to fit most heads, there’s adjustable padding on the inside to ensure a comfortable and snug fit, and a sheer see-through visor. The side panels pop outwards so that you can easily put on or take off the helmet.
  • Not up for wearing your helmet? That’s okay – the helmet is also fit to display in your shrine to Proto Man. Or, if you don’t have a shrine for some reason, it’ll look nice on a shelf or desk, thanks to the clever design that artfully hides the seams.
  • The helmet itself is made out of ABS plastic and has a polished, chrome-like sheen. It’s perfect for cosplay!
  • This is a faithful replica of Proto Man’s helmet down to the finest details – it includes air vents on the back, as well as glowing side panels that run off of AAA batteries.

Now, I bet you’re thinking “now, that’s a nice helmet, but it’s missing a certain something. A certain… je ne sais quoi.” Well, you’re in luck, as helmets ordered through the Capcom Store will include an authentic re-creation of Proto Man’s yellow scarf, complete with the Proto Man seal on one tail – perfect for bringing the whole look together.

The Capcom Store is taking orders now , with a special promotional price of $160 (USD), and shipping expected to start Winter 2016. The production run will be limited to the number of pre-orders and ends on September 1st, so if you’ve got your eyes on one of these helmets, get over there and grab one quick!

Street Fighter V July Bug Fixes

Jul 14, 2016 // Harrison Young

Hey guys, here to give a quick update on some character changes included in the Cinematic Story Mode update. You may have seen that we have fixed a couple of bugs with the newly available Ibuki but we would like to give a full list of the minor bug fixes for the remaining characters. Click the jump to check them out.

Cammy

Bug: Cammy’s Fatal Leg Twister cannot throw opponents who are in a couch state; however, when an opponent is coming out of a damage motion/animation and is attempting to crouch while coming out the animation, Cammy could through the opponent.

Fix: Cammy’s Fatal Leg Twister, a throw attack that is not meant to throw opponents in a crouching state, is no longer able to throw an opponent  who is inputting a crouch while coming out of a damage motion/animation.

Nash

Bug: When throwing Sonic Booms (all strengths), Nash’s collision box did not extend all the way to Nash’s feet when releasing the projectile, causing the opponent character to pass through  him when approaching from behind.

Fix: Set the collision box of the Sonic Boom motion to reach Nash’s feet, so that the opponent character cannot pass through him.

Bug: Nash’s collision box when stunned (dizzied) is slightly shifted towards his backside when compared to how he appears on screen and when trying to hit Nash while in a stunned state, unintended behaviors would occur.

Fix: Adjusted Nash’s collision box when in a stunned state so that its position matches Nash’s appearance on screen.

Bug: Activating V-Trigger at the same time the opponent performs a V-Reversal, caused a bug where the camera would move incorrectly for a period of time.

Fix: Corrected this issue so that when Nash’s V-Trigger is activated at the same time as the opponent’s V-Reversal the camera no longer moves incorrectly.

F.A.N.G

Bug: During M. or H. Ryobenda, there is a moment where F.A.N.G’s lower body collision box would disappear, which was unintended.

Fix: Adjusted M. and H. Ryobenda so that the collision box is consistent throughout the entire motion of the move.

Rashid

Bug: In Flap Spin, V. Spinning Mixer, and Dash Spinning Mixer, the empty guard box was set so that it could not force the opponent’s guard motion.

Fix: Flap Spin, V. Spinning Mixer, and Dash Spinning Mixer, are now able to force the opponent to empty guard.

Bug: When doing an EX Eagle Spike from Front Flip (V-Skill), the kick buttons have to be pressed at precisely the same time in order for the move to come out.

Fix: EX Eagle Spike from Front Flip will come out even if there is a one frame gap between the kick buttons that are pressed simultaneously.

Bug: Due to the small size of V Eagle Spike’s collision box, when performing the move when the V-Trigger’s tornado is right behind the opponent, the move would pass through the opposite side of the opponent.

Fix: Increased the size of V Eagle Spike’s collision box so that Rashid doesn’t pass through the opponent.

Bug: When Assault Beak hits as a counter hit, the distance created between Rashid and the opponent upon hit is a little more than when it hits normally, which is not intended.

Fix: Adjusted Assault Beak so that when it hits as a counter, the distance created between Rashid and the opponent is the same as when Assault Beak hits are a normal hit.

Bug: Rashid was unable to cancel the initial jump frames into Altair.

Fix: Initial jump frames can now be canceled into Altair.

Birdie

Bug: There is a section in Bull Slider’s hurt box that doesn’t contain a throw box, which unintentionally provided throw invincibility to Birdie.

Fix: There is now a throw box throughout the entire motion of Bull Slider.

Alex

Bug: Alex’s V-Skill, Overhaul’s effect is supposed to be negated when Alex hits an opponent with an attack, when his attack is guarded, or when getting hit by an opponent’s attack. However, even when Alex’s J. LP or J. LK is guarded, the effect would remain present.

Fix: When J. LP or J. LK is guarded by the opponent, Overhaul’s effect is negated.

Ken

Bug: During V-Trigger, L. Shoryuken landing motion can be canceled into M. Shoryuken, H. Shoryuken, or EX Shoryuken. But, when an opponent jumps over Ken while he is performing this cancel on a whiffed V L. Shoryuken, Ken would perform the additional Shoryuken towards the opposite direction.

Fix: V. L. Shoryuken landing animation after being whiffed or guarded is no longer cancelable into M. Shoryuken, H. Shoryuken, or EX Shoryuken.

Bug: When H. Shoryuken trades during the initial part of the attack, Ken is way more advantageous and can easily gain the upper hand, which was not intended.

Fix: Made it difficult for Ken to gain the upper hand when the first part of an H. Shoryuken trades with an opponent’s attack.

Ryu

Bug: When Jodan Sanrengeki hits an opponent right when they are going from a standing state into a crouching state, the hit animation of the opponent behaved irregularly.,

Fix: Adjusted Jodan Sanrengeki so that when it hits an opponent transferring into a couching state, the opponents hit animation behaves normally.

Bug: During V-Trigger, when successfully performing Mind’s Eye (V-Skill), it was impossible to cancel the second half of Mind’s Eye’s into another Mind’s Eye.

Fix: Corrected this so that during V-Trigger, the second half of a successfully performed Mind’s Eye can be canceled into another Mind’s Eye.

M. Bison

Bug: EX Head Press (including while V-Trigger is activated) would miss the second stomp at times when used against certain actions.

Fix: The hit box of the second stomp in EX Head Press (including while V-Trigger is activated) has been expanded, making it easier for it to hit.

Bug: When Psycho Inferno hits an opponent or is guarded, the side taking damage would gain large amount of meter.

Fix: Lowered the amount of meter gained by the side taking damage from being hit or guarding Psycho Inferno.

Dhalsim

Bug: The empty guard box on Yoga Gale (normal ver.) is placed high, making it difficult to force opponents to guard.

Fix: Lowered the empty guard box on Yoga Gale, making it easier to force opponents to guard.

Guile

Bug: When Guile’s Sonic Hurricane hits an airborne opponent right after the move becomes active, if the opponent performs a recovery, Guile would be put at about a 16 frame disadvantage.

Fix: Because this was an unintended circumstance, Sonic Hurricane has been adjusted so that in cases when it hits and only on hit, Guile will be able to move before his opponent.

Vega

Bug: When performing a V-Trigger (Bloody Kiss – Rojo) without the claw on wake-up or after guarding, it was impossible for it to be used as a reversal.

Fix: This has been corrected so that when the V-Tigger (Bloody Kiss – Rojo) is used without the claw on during wake-up or after guarding it can be used as a reversal.

Chun-Li

Bug: When Dhalsim is the opponent, when attempting to hit him with Yosokyaku’s first hit, whether or not it would hit would differ between the 1P side and the 2P side under specific circumstances.

Fix: Widened the hit box of Yosokyaku towards Chun-Li’s backside very slightly so that when the move hits or misses is consistent regardless of which side Chun-Li is on.

Vega

Bug: With the claw is equipped, when inputting down(any crouch input)+LP+LK right before waking up or coming out of hit/guard stun,  he would perform a C. LP instead of a normal throw when Vega becomes moveable.

Fix: This has been corrected so that when pressing down (any crouch input)+LP+LK during reversal timing with Vega (w/ claw) will result in a normal throw when Vega becomes movable.

Ibuki

Bug: After activating Ibuki’s air throw (Tobizaru), Ibuki was invincible while landing on the ground.

Fix: Added a hurtbox to Ibuki during her landing frames after an activated Tobizaru.

Bug: When holding down HP while activating Tenrai (Ibuki’s V-Skill), Tenrai would only come out at max charge.

Fix: Corrected this so that even when holding down HP, Tenrai can be used without being charged.

Monster Hunter Generations Localization Notes Part 4 – Mizutsune, Deviant Monsters, and Prowlers

Jul 09, 2016 // Marco

Hello, again! Can you believe we’re less than a week away from the release of Monster Hunter Generations? I hope you’re all as hyped as we are! As we count down the days to release, I’m back to give you another peek into the game’s localization. Today, we’ll be focusing on more monster names, in particular, the naming scheme used for the new Deviant Monsters. But, before we dive in, let’s start things off with another one of the Fated Four!

Mizutsune

Primarily found in the Misty Peaks and Primal Forest, this leviathan has the unique ability to produce bubbles and foam from its body, giving it swift and fluid movement on land, basically turning the world into its own personal Slip ‘N Slide. Get on its bad side, and you’ll find yourself on the receiving end of its whip-like attacks, or maybe even get a jet of pressurized water to the face. But, what you really need to watch out for are its bubbles. Mizutsune has attacks that can inflict hunters with the new Bubbles status ailment. If you get covered in too many bubbles, your footing will become slippery and you’ll be unable to attack—not a situation you want to be in when an angry leviathan is trying to rip you a new one!

When we initially saw the design documents for this monster, the first thing we noticed was the strong Japanese theme. For one, it’s the flagship monster of the Japanesque Yukumo Village. But, on top of that, many of the concepts behind its name and design are rooted in Japanese culture. For instance, its original name, タマミツム[ ta-ma-mi-tsu-ne ], is solely derived from Japanese, drawing from the words for “bubble” and “snake,” the name of a legendary fox spirit in Japanese mythology, 玉藻å‰[ Tamamo-no-Mae ], and an honorific title used in Shintoism. You’ll also see Japanese influences in the designs for its armor sets. The concept originates from the folk belief, キツãƒã®å«å…¥ã‚Š [ kitsune-no-yomeiri ], or “The Fox’s Wedding,” so the sets look like really neat fox-themed variations of traditional wedding attire.

(Blademaster)                                      (Gunner)

To preserve this overall theme in the international name, we thought it would be best to keep it Japanese in nature. However, were afraid a transliteration of the original, “Tamamitsune,” wouldn’t be easy to pronounce. Not to mention, the name was a bit lengthy as a base name, and would really limit our naming options if there were ever a Subspecies or Deviant of this monster in the future. Simplifying it to “Mitsune” was our first proposal, but the director Ichinose-san didn’t like the ring of it.  He ended up approving our second proposal, a combination of the Japanese words for “water” and “fox.” In hindsight, I’m glad “Mitsune” didn’t get approved in the end. All we did was chop off the first part of the original name, so it felt like a lazy way to name a monster—not to mention a flagship!

Deviant Monsters

In a nutshell, Deviants are a new type of monster in MH Gen that are a lot more dangerous than their normal counterparts. They behave differently and tend to have unique physical features compared to their base species. They’re so dangerous, hunters actually need to obtain special permits to hunt them!

There are a total of twelve Deviant Monsters in the game, so we had a lot of work to do. But, before we could start brainstorming, we had to come up with a naming convention. Given the special conditions required to hunt Deviant Monsters, we needed to think of names that would distinguish them from other Sub- or Rare Species. This distinction was already established in the Japanese names, since all Sub- and Rare Species in the series are called just that: 亜種 [ a-shu ] and 希少種 [ ki-shou-shu ] are appended to the monster names, so the Japanese is literally “Rathalos Subspecies” or “Rathian Rare Species,” for example. The Japanese Deviant names give each monster a unique prefix, differentiating them from the names of other species. But, as it happens, giving monsters unique monikers was already our convention for localizing Sub- and Rare Species names in previous titles—they’re generally named by color or by some other characteristic. For instance, the Rathalos Subspecies and Rathian Rare Species mentioned above were localized as Azure Rathalos and Pink Rathian. So, we had to think of another way to name Deviants that would set them apart from the rest.

When we translated the Japanese Deviant names literally, they were already pretty unique, but many were too long and easily went over the character limits we had to work with. We started experimenting with authoritative titles and ranks, such as in nobility and military, to emphasize their superiority over other species. This seemed to work well at first, but after a while the monster names started to sound too human. We ended up scrapping this idea after a round of proposals and went back to the drawing board. We eventually decided to use a compound word, either existing or of our own creation, before each monster name to classify it as a Deviant. Though they came out a little longer than the title/rank-inspired names, this convention worked better because we were able to keep a lot of the original meaning from the Japanese names, and they were much more unique. Here are the names of the first six:

Crystalbeard Uragaan

The original name, å®çº [ takara-matoi ], translates to “treasure-clad.” It has crystal-like minerals protruding from various parts of its body, but we felt the crystals on its chin to be more prominent, so we focused the name on that. Other proposals included Crystaljaw, Gemjaw, and Gembeard. We decided against any –jaw version, because it was too similar to “glass jaw” and made it sound vulnerable.

Deadeye Yian Garuga

We first thought of going with a direct translation of 隻眼 [ seki-gan ] and call it One-eyed Yian Garuga, but we wanted to emphasize that this monster was not born as such, but had lost an eye in a past battle. Another idea was Scarface Yian Garuga, but we scrapped it to avoid the association with the movie.

Grimclaw Tigrex

Called è’鉤爪 [ ara-kagi-zume ] in Japanese, which literally translates to “rough hook claw.” We originally wanted to go with Hardclaw for this monster, but after cross-referencing our glossary we realized that was already used in material names. Other proposals included Steelclaw and Cruelclaw, but the director liked the meaning behind “grim” and its imagery with the Grim Reaper.

Thunderlord Zinogre

For this Deviant, we combined our original title/rank naming scheme with the compound word convention. The Japanese name, 金雷公 [ kin-rai-kou ], literally translates to “gold thunder prince,” so we kept the noble title in the localized name as well. We threw around other ideas like Thunderclap, Thunderbolt, and Goldspark, but we pushed for Thunderlord because it was closest to the source material.

Snowbaron Lagombi

The Japanese name for this monster, 大雪主 [ oo-yuki-nushi ], means “great snow master, ” so it made sense to use a noble title in this name, too. Snowlord was among our top picks, but since we already decided to use “lord” for the Deviant Zinogre, we went with another title. Another idea that would have worked well was Snowstorm, but we wanted to keep the “master” connotation in the name.

Silverwind Nargacuga

Called “white gale,” or 璽疾風 [ shiro-hayate ] in Japanese. We mix and matched similar words that sounded sharper and faster to highlight its swift wind-based attacks. We almost went with Razorwind, but in the end we felt Silverwind better represented the monster’s appearance and characteristics.

That’s six down, six to go! Next time, I’ll cover the rest of the Deviant Monsters, as well as the final of the Fated Four. But, before we wrap things up today I wanted to touch upon another one of the new features in MH Gen—Prowler Mode! For the first time in the series, you’ll be able to hunt alongside other hunters as a Felyne, known as a Prowler. In Japanese, Prowlers are called ニャンター [ nyan-taa ], which is a play on the onomatopoeia for cat sounds, and the word “hunter.” When brainstorming the English term, we tried incorporating a pun as well, aiming for something akin to Palico (pal + calico). It felt like we spent hours comparing cat-related words with synonyms for hunting and fighting, but nothing we came up with really clicked. To be frank, a lot of the ideas were just flat out bad! We didn’t want to force a pun in if we didn’t have to, so we changed up our thought process and kept it simple: think of something that ends in –er like Hunter. It was only a matter of time before someone suggested Prowler, and we thought it was the perfect fit.

Thanks very much for reading! I hope this gave you a better idea into the processes we undergo when localizing monster names and game terms. I’m sad to say my next post will be my last in this series, but I have a few surprises in store, so check back soon!

Resident Evil 4 Arrives on PS4/Xbox One August 30

Jul 07, 2016 // Tim

One of the greatest video games of all time is coming soon to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Leon S. Kennedy’s intense mission to save the President’s daughter is a turning point in the 20-year-old horror franchise, and the title’s arrival on modern consoles is the perfect opportunity for fans to remember why it has stood the test of time, or for the uninitiated to learn where all the accolades come from.

Resident Evil 4, originally released in 2005, evolved the horror series’ formula in an exciting new direction, empowering players with unprecedented third-person aiming precision while defending themselves against hordes of clever new enemies called Ganados. Players could trip enemies with shots to the legs, or dial in headshots – sometimes with surprising and deadly results. Deep customization options permeate through the game, including a wide variety of fully upgradeable weapons, like pistols, shotguns, and rifles.

This potent combination of exotic weaponry and dynamic enemy encounters is part of why RE4 was not only incredibly innovative for the wider video game industry, but has stood the test of time. There are many examples of paradigm-shifting video games throughout history, but not all of them have the benefit of being as fun to play today as when they first released. Resident Evil 4 is one of the best examples of this rarity.

This current release of Resident Evil 4 on PS4 and Xbox One includes all the bonus content from the original game, as well as additional features that were added in later versions. The mysterious and elusive Ada Wong stars in her own side story, which fills in intriguing story gaps from Leon’s mission. Mercenaries Mode – the addicting evolution of RE3’s bonus mode – is awarded to players who complete the campaign, providing hours of replayability and lets fans play as Wesker, Hunk, and more iconic characters. RE4 also boasts some of the most satisfying New Game Plus action ever, allowing players to bring their powerful arsenal, unlocked costumes, and other secret weapons into a fresh playthrough. Want to focus on yourself instead of protecting Ashley? Equip her with the knight armor costume and laugh as enemy’s attempt to attack her or carry her off with futility. Leon’s Chicago Typewriter – an insanely powerful Tommy Gun – also provides a fun power trip if you have enough cash to give the infamous Merchant.

Drowning RE4 with breathless praise is a fun pastime, but playing the game is even better. Get ready to return to this irrefutable classic when it releases on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One August 30. For more screenshots check out our Facebook photo gallery .
