Monster Hunter Generations Localization Notes Part 5 – Glavenus and More Deviant Monsters

Jul 28, 2016 // Marco

Monster Hunter Generations is finally out in the wild! Woo-hoo! To celebrate, I’m back with another look into the localization of the game. We still have six more Deviant Monsters to cover, and we haven’t even talked about the last of the Fated Four yet, so I hope you’re ready for a big dose of Monster Hunter goodness! I also have a little surprise prepared towards the end, so hit the jump to read on.

Glavenus

Known as “The Scorching Blade,” the final flagship monster in MH Gen is a fiery Brute Wyvern that reigns as king of the Jurassic Frontier, and will make short work of any monster unfortunate enough to cross its path. You can tell just by the flame-shaped spikes on its back that this is one fearsome monster, but even more so is the fact that it virtually has a sword for a tail! The tail itself is longer than half the total length of its body, and coated in hard minerals, thanks to the repeated scraping of it on the ground and other surfaces during its maturing process. This essentially turns it into a deadly blade that Glavenus uses to make mincemeat out of its prey. If that wasn’t enough, the minerals in its tail contain combustible components, allowing Glavenus to ignite flames by striking it on the ground like a match. After a few strikes, its tail will turn red-hot, increasing its attack power. It eventually cools down and becomes rusty, but don’t let your guard down. Glavenus is able to restore sharpness to its tail by grinding it with its fangs, and can even shoot out a magma-like substance from its mouth at high speed.

I can only imagine the lower-back pain.

Reference image of the tail’s “heated” state

Reference image of the tail’s “rusted” state

Given the information above, the Japanese name, ディノãƒãƒ«ãƒ‰ [ di-no-ba-ru-do ], sums up the monster well, combining words for “dinosaur,” “nova,” and “halberd.” However, after we tried romanizing it, “dino” just felt too on the nose. Also, its tail reminded us more of a sword rather than a halberd. So, we decided to take a different approach and drew from words related to fire, swords, and ferocity in different languages. Here are a few names from the first round of brainstorming:

 • Ignagrios: from the Latin word for fire and Greek word for ferocious
 • Ardurox: from the Latin words for blaze and fierce
 • Kalagrios: from the Greek words for burn and ferocious, and the Latin word for blade
 • Dynigrus: from Dyrnwyn, a sword in Welsh lore, and the Latin words for fire and wild

We mulled over our ideas for a while, but we weren’t too crazy about any of them. After some more deliberation, we decided to include something dinosaur-related in the name after all, but only if we could make it more subtle than the original name. We looked to actual names of dinosaurs, such as the Carnotaurus and Tyrannosaurus, and experimented with the –saurus suffix. We shortened it to –us, preceded it with parts of the Latin words for sword and burning, and came up with Glavenus (gladio + fervens + saurus).

Now you know all there is to know about the naming behind the Fated Four! But we’re not done with new monster names just yet. Before we get into the rest of the Deviants, there’s one more monster I’d like to introduce. To best explain the naming behind it, I’ll need to go into a little bit of spoiler territory regarding the nature of the monster, so if you’d rather stay in the dark until you hunt it for yourself, skip ahead to the Dreadking Rathalos and Dreadqueen Rathian below.
Nakarkos

The newest Elder Dragon in the Monster Hunter series is a real nasty piece of work. A literal monster eater, it will devour any monster, big or small, in attempt to appease its insatiable appetite.  Its lair is known as Wyvern’s End, a huge pit littered with the bones of countless monsters, which looks just as horrifying as it sounds:

That’s a lot of monster bones.

Reference image of Nakarkos during localization

The Japanese name, オストガロア [ o-su-to-ga-ro-a ], comes from os (Latin for bone), octopus, and Tangaroa, the MÄori god of the sea. But, given the fact this monster is literally surrounded by death, we brought this theme into the mix when brainstorming the international name. Here are a few of our earlier ideas:

 • Rakendros: from the words kraken, hydra, and the Latin word for bone
 • Sav’gaddha: from the Hindi words for cadaver and pit
 • Krakaros: from the words kraken, carcass, and the Greek word for death

It felt like we were on the right track with Krakaros, but the kraken reference was too conspicuous. We switched it out with different cephalopod names, rearranged a few letters, and liked Nakarkos (nautilus + carcass + nekros). It had a dark, macabre sound to it that fit well with the monster’s overall image.
Dreadking Rathalos and Dreadqueen Rathian

The Japanese names for these Deviants are 黒炎王 [ koku-en-ou ] and 紫毒姫 [ shi-doku-hime ], which literally translate to “black flame king” and “purple poison princess,” respectively. We started out naming these separately, coming up with names like Blackfire, Blackflame, and Flameking for the Rathalos; and Poisonspike, Venomqueen, and Blightqueen for the Rathian. In the end, we decided to give them a pair name based off of their nicknames as the “King of the Skies” and “Queen of the Land.”

Redhelm Arzuros

The Japanese name for this monster, ç´…å…œ [ beni-kabuto ], means “crimson helmet.” We considered using Crimson- for the first part of the name, but went with Red- instead because it gave us more space to brainstorm with for the second half of the name. Some of our other proposals included Redmane and Redcrown, but we stuck with helmet because we liked the imagery. In the end, we still had room in the character limit to use Crimson- , but after brainstorming with Red- , the sound of Redhelm grew on us.

Drilltusk Tetsucabra

Called 岩穿 [ iwa-ugachi ] in Japanese, which translates to “stone borer.” We initially wanted to use Boretusk or Borefang for this monster, but since we already have a Berserk Tetsucabra, we went with Drill – instead to avoid having two Tetsucabra names that began with a “B.” We thought it would be best that Deviant names didn’t start with the same letter as existing Sub- or Rare species, so we wouldn’t run into any potential issues with associated item names.

Stonefist Hermitaur

Known as 矛砖 [ hoko-kudaki ] or, “spear breaker,” in Japanese. Technically, this monster’s international name should have been Stonefist Daimyo Hermitaur, but since the base name alone was 16 characters, we had to omit Daimyo to allow space for the Deviant convention. Among those in the running for this name were Stonewall and Thickshell, but we decided against them because they only put focus on the monster’s defensive qualities.

Hellblade Glavenus

The Japanese name, 燼滅刃 [ jin-metsu-jin ], would roughly translate to something along the lines of “blade that burns all to ash.” A few of our top picks for this Deviant name were Ruinblade and Scorchblade, either of which would have worked well, but Hellblade Glavenus just has such a cool ring to it. Not to mention the fiery red spikes on its head and back make it look very devilish, so Hellblade felt like the perfect fit.

That’s it! Those are all the new monsters you’ll be able to hunt in MH Gen. Which of the new monsters are you looking most forward to hunting? Let us know in the comments below. As for that surprise I mentioned earlier, the Producer and Director of the game themselves asked me to pass on the following messages to all you Monster Hunter fans out there!

Producer Shintaro Kojima

The latest entry in the Monster Hunter series is finally here! I know it’s been a while since the Japanese release of the game, but believe me when I say we worked tirelessly to get the overseas version to you as soon as humanly possible. Thanks so much for being patient with us! Though Monster Hunter Generations is not a numbered entry in the series, you can rest assured that everything you’ve come to know and love about Monster Hunter is still there. But, on top of that, this title has a ton of new features that sets it apart from the rest!

I can’t wait for you to try out all the weapon, Hunting Style, and Hunter Art combinations and find the perfect play style for you. During development, I remember the excitement I had trying out all the features and seeing the new monsters for the first time, so it’s exciting to know that you can now experience that same thrilling feeling I had back then. If you’re a seasoned hunter, you’re going to feel right at home with this title. And if you’re a newcomer, you couldn’t have picked a better time to start hunting! With Monster Hunter Generations, it’s easier than ever to jump into the series.

I really hope you enjoy the game!

Director Yasunori Ichinose

Sorry to keep you waiting so long after the Japanese release, but I think the finished international version of the game came out quite nicely! I hope you agree it was worth the wait. I like to think of Monster Hunter Generations as a celebration of all the Monster Hunter games up until now. We jam-packed this party with tons of content—not only with familiar locations, characters, and monsters from previous games, but lots of new features, too. I’m happy to say that we were even able to include a few collaboration armor sets in this release that we weren’t able to get into the Japanese version. Lucky you!

We especially put a lot of focus into the new combat mechanics in the game, and now hunting has never been more customizable. With all the new Hunting Styles and Hunter Arts, combat in Monster Hunter is deeper and more versatile than ever before, making it accessible to veteran hunters and new players alike. You can even join the fray as a Felyne. Yes, Prowlers are smaller and furrier than Hunters. But trust me, they’re no less of a threat. Monsters out there better watch out! The Prowlers are coming!

I often hear that Monster Hunter fans overseas are some of the most passionate fans around, so thank you very much for supporting the series throughout the years. I hope the Monster Hunter community grows even bigger with what this title has to offer.

Localization Director Marco Bombasi

As for me, it just feels great to know that the game’s finally out! It’s been a long year and a half, but the thought of you hunting a Glavenus with your friends makes it all worth it. A special thanks goes out to our friends at Keywords Studios for all their help on the North American and European localization, and everyone at Capcom USA and Capcom Europe for their support throughout the project. The Western release of this title wouldn’t have been possible without their help. Lastly, on behalf of all of us here in the Global R&D department, I’d like to thank you for supporting the series and taking the time to read these blogs. It’s been a pleasure sharing our experiences with you. I hope you’ve enjoyed them!

Now, get out there and show those monsters who’s boss!

Juri Joins the Street Fighter V Roster

Jul 21, 2016 // haunts

Hello, Street Fighters!

We have a couple of exciting pieces of news to share with you today. Following the announcements from EVO and SDCC 2016, this month’s update will bring you our latest addition to the Street Fighter V roster: Juri!

Introduced in Super Street Fighter IV, Juri is a provocative S.I.N. agent from South Korea who goes by the codename of “Spider” and worked under Seth. Juri is a sadistic fighter who enjoys violence and loves tormenting her prey, with a tendency to get involved in anything she deems as fun or dangerous. Fueled by hatred of Shadaloo and M.Bison for the murder of her parents, Juri joined S.I.N. to seek revenge and doesn’t care who she has to annihilate to achieve her goals.

Juri in Street Fighter IV

Juri returns to Street Fighter V with a brand new look and some tricks up her sleeves. A trained expert in Taekwondo, Juri also possesses a ki booster called the Feng Shui Engine equipped in her left eye to aid her during battles. She focuses on flashy, fast and furious kicks, and has a wide range of ki-based attacks at her disposal. Her trademark moves are her ki-based fireball attack and pinwheel kick.

What has Juri been up to since defeating Seth? Why is she back? Be sure to check out the free  story DLC “A Shadow Falls” to find out!

V-Skill: Kasatsushu

 • Juri builds charges up and rushes at the opponent, kicking them from behind. Juri can choose to charge Kasatsushu by holding down the V-Skill command. During this charge, she can cancel Kasatsushu at any time by inputting a forward or backward dash. Additionally, she maintains her charge level after the cancel.

V-Trigger: Feng Shui Engine Type Alpha

 • Juri activates the Feng Shui Engine which allows her to cancel all of her standard attacks, both in the air and on the ground, into one another. In addition, each strength of her Fuharenkyaku attacks will remain in their charged state.

Critical Art – Sakkai Fuhazan

 • Juri kicks out a large slicing blast towards the opponent that hits multiple times.

Juri will be available to download on the PlayStation and Steam stores starting July 26 th . Fans attending San Diego Comic Con this week will be able to experience playing Juri first hand at the Street Fighter V booth, so be sure to stop by!

We will be conducting server maintenance from 9AM to 5PM PT on 7/26 (Tuesday) in preperation of the release of Juri.

Juri’s Story and Premium Battle Costume will also become available at the same time she releases on the 26 th.

Start with a good subject. I’ll let you work on that.

Groin: If it still exists, yes.
Foot: Yes. Definitely. Because they try that one step after and… *chuckles* … and then… *laughing* … they fall on their… *laugh-crying* … Sorry, gimme a minute… *laugh-weeping*

Proto Man wearable helmet pre-orders available now at the Capcom Store!

Jul 19, 2016 // Kellen Haney

Now, I know you saw that helmet up there and are looking for some sort of buy button to mash your wallet against. There’s no need for wallet-based mishaps – click here to head over to the Capcom Store and pre-order your very own Proto Man helmet! Plus, if you’re heading to San Diego Comic-Con, you’ll also have the chance to see the helmet yourself alongside the other great products and activities that we’ll have at the show! Need more information? Just hit the screen transition – er, “Read More” button below.

Proto Man always seemed like a cool anti-hero compared to Mega Man. Sure, they may have similar helmets, but Proto Man has shades built right into his, and a stylish pattern on the front! That’s not only cool, but also radical, and maybe even a bit tubular. I promise I won’t use any of those words anymore. Let’s get right into the details about the helmet itself:

 • Designed to fit most heads, there’s adjustable padding on the inside to ensure a comfortable and snug fit, and a sheer see-through visor. The side panels pop outwards so that you can easily put on or take off the helmet.
 • Not up for wearing your helmet? That’s okay – the helmet is also fit to display in your shrine to Proto Man. Or, if you don’t have a shrine for some reason, it’ll look nice on a shelf or desk, thanks to the clever design that artfully hides the seams.
 • The helmet itself is made out of ABS plastic and has a polished, chrome-like sheen. It’s perfect for cosplay!
 • This is a faithful replica of Proto Man’s helmet down to the finest details – it includes air vents on the back, as well as glowing side panels that run off of AAA batteries.

Now, I bet you’re thinking “now, that’s a nice helmet, but it’s missing a certain something. A certain… je ne sais quoi.” Well, you’re in luck, as helmets ordered through the Capcom Store will include an authentic re-creation of Proto Man’s yellow scarf, complete with the Proto Man seal on one tail – perfect for bringing the whole look together.

The Capcom Store is taking orders now , with a special promotional price of $160 (USD), and shipping expected to start Winter 2016. The production run will be limited to the number of pre-orders and ends on September 1st, so if you’ve got your eyes on one of these helmets, get over there and grab one quick!

Introducing Exclusive Capcom Pro Tour Content for SFV!

Jul 15, 2016 // Harrison Young

Hey everyone! As you may have heard from our panel earlier today at EVO, we’re happy to announce a new line of Capcom Pro Tour themed content that is available now for Street Fighter V players to enjoy.

We believe our fans should have a way to show their love for the Capcom Pro Tour and all the players in the league.  We feel this is great way for players to support the Capcom Pro Tour, and also watch it grow, as the prize pool for Capcom Cup 2016 will increase based on the content download numbers. While the Capcom Pro Tour has seen incredible growth over the past few years, we feel this is just the beginning and there is a ton of opportunity for both Capcom and the community to elevate the Street Fighter scene to new heights.

Hit the jump for more details!

Before we get into the upcoming content, we’d also like to announce that PlayStation 4 is now the presenting sponsor of the Capcom Pro Tour! Sony has been a great partner to the fighting game community for years now and we are really excited to work with them to continue to grow the scene.

We have multiple ways for fans to get involved, with the first being a set of “Capcom Cup Collection“ costumes for both Cammy and Chun-Li! These are elegant outfits for both characters that match the prestige of competing under the bright lights of the Capcom Pro Tour.

Capcom Pro Tour Costumes

Chun-Li – Capcom Cup Collection – $5.99/€5.99

Cammy – Capcom Cup Collection – $5.99/€5.99

We also have one more mystery costume that we will be revealing later in the year. This costume is very special and we think fans will be really excited about what this means for Capcom Cup 2016 once we officially unveil it. Stay tuned!

Capcom Pro Tour Stage

Next up we have the brand new Capcom Pro Tour themed stage, “Ring of Destiny!” Not only will this make you feel like you’re competing at one of the biggest events of the year, but you will also see it update throughout the season with new banners and images to celebrate major events on the Capcom Pro Tour such as EVO and Capcom Cup. The EVO variation of this stage is available now to celebrate this weekend!

Ring of Destiny – Official Capcom Pro Tour Stage – $9.99/€9.99

Capcom Pro Tour Bundle

As part of our new partnership with Sony, we’ve worked with them to put together a special Capcom Pro Tour DLC bundle. For those of you who love all of this content and want an extra awesome deal, we have the Capcom Pro Tour Premier Package! This bundle not only includes the three costumes and stage, but also an exclusive CPT themed color for all 22 characters, in addition to 2 exclusive titles!

As mentioned previously, except for the mystery costume, this Capcom Pro Tour themed content for Street Fighter V is available now for PS4 and PC players. This special content will only be available for a limited time and will be removed near the end of November and prior to the Capcom Cup. We will keep the community and our supporters posted regarding what improvements this means for the Capcom Pro Tour and the Capcom Cup.

Once again, thank you for supporting Street Fighter V and the Capcom Pro Tour! We’re really excited for what the future holds and can’t wait to build the next era of the Capcom Pro Tour with the community directly!

Street Fighter V July Bug Fixes

Jul 14, 2016 // Harrison Young

Hey guys, here to give a quick update on some character changes included in the Cinematic Story Mode update. You may have seen that we have fixed a couple of bugs with the newly available Ibuki but we would like to give a full list of the minor bug fixes for the remaining characters. Click the jump to check them out.

Cammy

Bug: Cammy’s Fatal Leg Twister cannot throw opponents who are in a couch state; however, when an opponent is coming out of a damage motion/animation and is attempting to crouch while coming out the animation, Cammy could through the opponent.

Fix: Cammy’s Fatal Leg Twister, a throw attack that is not meant to throw opponents in a crouching state, is no longer able to throw an opponent  who is inputting a crouch while coming out of a damage motion/animation.

Nash

Bug: When throwing Sonic Booms (all strengths), Nash’s collision box did not extend all the way to Nash’s feet when releasing the projectile, causing the opponent character to pass through  him when approaching from behind.

Fix: Set the collision box of the Sonic Boom motion to reach Nash’s feet, so that the opponent character cannot pass through him.

Bug: Nash’s collision box when stunned (dizzied) is slightly shifted towards his backside when compared to how he appears on screen and when trying to hit Nash while in a stunned state, unintended behaviors would occur.

Fix: Adjusted Nash’s collision box when in a stunned state so that its position matches Nash’s appearance on screen.

Bug: Activating V-Trigger at the same time the opponent performs a V-Reversal, caused a bug where the camera would move incorrectly for a period of time.

Fix: Corrected this issue so that when Nash’s V-Trigger is activated at the same time as the opponent’s V-Reversal the camera no longer moves incorrectly.

F.A.N.G

Bug: During M. or H. Ryobenda, there is a moment where F.A.N.G’s lower body collision box would disappear, which was unintended.

Fix: Adjusted M. and H. Ryobenda so that the collision box is consistent throughout the entire motion of the move.

Rashid

Bug: In Flap Spin, V. Spinning Mixer, and Dash Spinning Mixer, the empty guard box was set so that it could not force the opponent’s guard motion.

Fix: Flap Spin, V. Spinning Mixer, and Dash Spinning Mixer, are now able to force the opponent to empty guard.

Bug: When doing an EX Eagle Spike from Front Flip (V-Skill), the kick buttons have to be pressed at precisely the same time in order for the move to come out.

Fix: EX Eagle Spike from Front Flip will come out even if there is a one frame gap between the kick buttons that are pressed simultaneously.

Bug: Due to the small size of V Eagle Spike’s collision box, when performing the move when the V-Trigger’s tornado is right behind the opponent, the move would pass through the opposite side of the opponent.

Fix: Increased the size of V Eagle Spike’s collision box so that Rashid doesn’t pass through the opponent.

Bug: When Assault Beak hits as a counter hit, the distance created between Rashid and the opponent upon hit is a little more than when it hits normally, which is not intended.

Fix: Adjusted Assault Beak so that when it hits as a counter, the distance created between Rashid and the opponent is the same as when Assault Beak hits are a normal hit.

Bug: Rashid was unable to cancel the initial jump frames into Altair.

Fix: Initial jump frames can now be canceled into Altair.

Birdie

Bug: There is a section in Bull Slider’s hurt box that doesn’t contain a throw box, which unintentionally provided throw invincibility to Birdie.

Fix: There is now a throw box throughout the entire motion of Bull Slider.

Alex

Bug: Alex’s V-Skill, Overhaul’s effect is supposed to be negated when Alex hits an opponent with an attack, when his attack is guarded, or when getting hit by an opponent’s attack. However, even when Alex’s J. LP or J. LK is guarded, the effect would remain present.

Fix: When J. LP or J. LK is guarded by the opponent, Overhaul’s effect is negated.

Ken

Bug: During V-Trigger, L. Shoryuken landing motion can be canceled into M. Shoryuken, H. Shoryuken, or EX Shoryuken. But, when an opponent jumps over Ken while he is performing this cancel on a whiffed V L. Shoryuken, Ken would perform the additional Shoryuken towards the opposite direction.

Fix: V. L. Shoryuken landing animation after being whiffed or guarded is no longer cancelable into M. Shoryuken, H. Shoryuken, or EX Shoryuken.

Bug: When H. Shoryuken trades during the initial part of the attack, Ken is way more advantageous and can easily gain the upper hand, which was not intended.

Fix: Made it difficult for Ken to gain the upper hand when the first part of an H. Shoryuken trades with an opponent’s attack.

Ryu

Bug: When Jodan Sanrengeki hits an opponent right when they are going from a standing state into a crouching state, the hit animation of the opponent behaved irregularly.,

Fix: Adjusted Jodan Sanrengeki so that when it hits an opponent transferring into a couching state, the opponents hit animation behaves normally.

Bug: During V-Trigger, when successfully performing Mind’s Eye (V-Skill), it was impossible to cancel the second half of Mind’s Eye’s into another Mind’s Eye.

Fix: Corrected this so that during V-Trigger, the second half of a successfully performed Mind’s Eye can be canceled into another Mind’s Eye.

M. Bison

Bug: EX Head Press (including while V-Trigger is activated) would miss the second stomp at times when used against certain actions.

Fix: The hit box of the second stomp in EX Head Press (including while V-Trigger is activated) has been expanded, making it easier for it to hit.

Bug: When Psycho Inferno hits an opponent or is guarded, the side taking damage would gain large amount of meter.

Fix: Lowered the amount of meter gained by the side taking damage from being hit or guarding Psycho Inferno.

Dhalsim

Bug: The empty guard box on Yoga Gale (normal ver.) is placed high, making it difficult to force opponents to guard.

Fix: Lowered the empty guard box on Yoga Gale, making it easier to force opponents to guard.

Guile

Bug: When Guile’s Sonic Hurricane hits an airborne opponent right after the move becomes active, if the opponent performs a recovery, Guile would be put at about a 16 frame disadvantage.

Fix: Because this was an unintended circumstance, Sonic Hurricane has been adjusted so that in cases when it hits and only on hit, Guile will be able to move before his opponent.

Vega

Bug: When performing a V-Trigger (Bloody Kiss – Rojo) without the claw on wake-up or after guarding, it was impossible for it to be used as a reversal.

Fix: This has been corrected so that when the V-Tigger (Bloody Kiss – Rojo) is used without the claw on during wake-up or after guarding it can be used as a reversal.

Chun-Li

Bug: When Dhalsim is the opponent, when attempting to hit him with Yosokyaku’s first hit, whether or not it would hit would differ between the 1P side and the 2P side under specific circumstances.

Fix: Widened the hit box of Yosokyaku towards Chun-Li’s backside very slightly so that when the move hits or misses is consistent regardless of which side Chun-Li is on.

Vega

Bug: With the claw is equipped, when inputting down(any crouch input)+LP+LK right before waking up or coming out of hit/guard stun,  he would perform a C. LP instead of a normal throw when Vega becomes moveable.

Fix: This has been corrected so that when pressing down (any crouch input)+LP+LK during reversal timing with Vega (w/ claw) will result in a normal throw when Vega becomes movable.

Ibuki

Bug: After activating Ibuki’s air throw (Tobizaru), Ibuki was invincible while landing on the ground.

Fix: Added a hurtbox to Ibuki during her landing frames after an activated Tobizaru.

Bug: When holding down HP while activating Tenrai (Ibuki’s V-Skill), Tenrai would only come out at max charge.

Fix: Corrected this so that even when holding down HP, Tenrai can be used without being charged.
