Why Street Fighters make great poker players

May 07, 2012 // Minish Capcom

As most of us know, there’s more going on during a pro-level Street Fighter match than mere button presses. But how deep does that extra layer go? Some (myself included) would argue the level of concentration and mind games equals that of any professional competition. G4 recently posted an article on the subject that suggests the intensity of a champion Street Fighter match, for instance, is comperable to a high-level poker tournament.

Featuring quotes from Arturo Sanchez and our own Seth Killian, this article is an interesting read that (IMO) helps convey the level of complexity many may miss during any given stream. Here’s a sample quote from Seth, regarding poker players – sound familair, fighting fans?

A professional poker player is obsessive. He spends hours analyzing his previous performances. He is focused. He takes advantage of previous experiences and builds upon them. He reads literature. He watches videos. He learns. Poker is all about information – the information you’re missing, the information you know, the information your opponents know and the information your opponents think they know. It’s crucial to be on top of what’s going on.”
