The Thrill of the Hunt: Thoughts on being a Monster Hunter

Jul 28, 2010 // Snow

Jesse “Main Finger” Gregory has a very interesting take on Monster Hunter on the Wing Damage blog, more specifically, Monster Hunter Tri. Everybody knows it’s an amazingly successful game in Japan. And it’s a game we’ve been trying very hard to show off here in the West. Jesse’s thoughts are really spot on, and if you’ve ever considered trying out Monster Hunter, give his write up a read through. He’s spot on with all his points:

– The Ecosystem: You don’t just go into a linear level and fight a boss at the end, you go hunting in a living, breathing environment.

– A hunter must have keen eyes: Every monster is believable. There’s no “HP Meter” for the monster you’re hunting. Instead, his movements, calls, attacks, and reactions to you all show how he’s fairing in the battle.

– You make the story: It’s often said that Monster Hunter has no story. In the traditional sense, that is entirely true. However, when you play Monster Hunter with friends, rarely does a night go by without a handful of stories crafting themselves.

– A constant sense of discovery: You’ll never know it all with Monster Hunter. There’s a constant sense of satisfying discoveries as you play.

He makes many more points, and you have to read it. Read his thoughts right here . Oh, and if you haven’t played Monster Hunter Tri, you really are missing out on one of the best games of this year.
