Yes, precisely two kinds of horror. This here handy image shows the difference between two major horror genres in gaming–Survival Horror and Action Horror. Particularly famous for making this subgenre jump is the Resident Evil series, whose fourth installment saw the advent of dramatic gameplay changes.

The series has since branched out in a variety of experimental directions, from the lightgun rail shooting of Gun Survivor and the Chronicles  games to the communal horror of Outbreak . I reckon the upcoming Resident Evil Revelations  sort of straddles the above two genres like a wide-legged Licker poised for some lickin’. 

What other games fit into these genres? What other subgenres of horror can you think of? Does Ghost Trick  qualify as Paranormal Detective Horror? Clearly yes.
