Gamasutra Q&A With Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi

Jul 30, 2010 // jgonzo

In Japan, the Sengoku BASARA franchise has resonated deeply with the population (see the picture above). The combination of historical figures with outlandish powers and enemies have bolstered the franchise’s popularity in manga, anime, and video game outlets. In sum: it’s kinda a big deal over there.

Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi (DMC4, RE4) is looking to translate the franchise’s success overseas with the latest incarnation, Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes for the Wii and PS3, due in stores October 12th.

Hit the jump to see what dream of mine he recently crushed in a Q&A with Gamasutra .

As I mentioned, Kobayashi-san recently sat down with Gamasutra to discuss the game, and managed to kill all my hopes for a US Civil War Heroes game:

Gamasutra: Do you think it would be interesting to do something like this with other historical periods, with characters like Abraham Lincoln and George Washington in exaggerated, crazy situations? I think that would actually get people excited.

HK: This fit really well with Japan because of Japanese history, but doing it with different countries’ histories probably won’t be accepted the way this was. Sengoku, the actual period, is a special period in Japanese history. There’s a lot more interest in it than there would be in other periods of Japanese history; it’s a very special time period.

That makes me sad 🙁 But at least we’re getting Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes out of it! Experience Japan’s history in outlandish fantasy settings when the game comes out in October! Check out the full interview here .
