Comic-con update: Preview Night spectacular
Jul 24, 2008 // Kramez
I’ll be honest, I’m concerned mostly about Seth. He tied a SFIV headband around his head last night and has yet to take it off. I think the pressure of organzing the daily SFIV tournaments is already getting to him. Note that Seth has tied the headband in a way that signifies to Japanese that he is sick/hung over.
The Capcom booth was slam-packed all night last night. The store was crazy busy, with Darrin and the Capcom merch crew pumping a couple thousand dollars worth of goods into eager consumer mitts. The exclusive Chun-Li statues were flying out of the store, moving even faster when SFIV producer Yoshinori Ono grabbed a big pile of ’em and signed the boxes. “eBay gold,” I heard Seth mutter.
Once the show began, a huge line formed, made up of eager Street Fighters looking for the chance to enter our boxing ring and get their hands on the precious Street Fighter IV joysticks. The line was never less than fifty people deep and the wait was up to an hour for some players. Hope they were good enough to not get immediately smoked. People here at the con are going crazy for SFIV, which is a great pleasure to all of us at Capcom. Ono-san had a huge grin plastered across his face all night as he watched competitors tear it up on his baby.
The line was so long that Seth let some folks jump ahead, but only if they stuck a SFIV tattoo on their face or head. Comedy!
My second favorite sight of the evening (after Seth and his headband) was seeing the Dark Knight facing off against the Spirit. It was like a million dork voices cried out and were silenced. I’m not going to tell you who won, either; we’ll leave that debate for comic book froums across the internetz.
Capcom cosplayers are a common sight at the con, but we’ve gotta give special shout-outs to those dedicated enough to wear their Capcom fandom permanently. I saw two super-rad tattoos last night, an 8-bit Mega Man on one dude’s arm and a young lady rocking a hot Umbrella Corp logo. Good stuff!
Gotta run, Kristen Kreuk just arrived and we’re going to get her to her autograph station. People started lining up to meet her at 10 AM and the crowd is getting anxious. More from the con later! We’ll be updating pics throughout the show in this gallery right here, so keep checking back.
