Capcom Retro Idol #15 – Mega Man X3
Apr 29, 2010 // jgonzo
Today, Dwayne is representing Mega Man X3 for the Capcom Retro Idol title . The last SNES Mega Man X game, Mega Man X3 featured a series first as it let you play as Zero for the first time, albeit briefly. To find out why this game made the top 17 list, you can read Dwayne’s defense below or on his blog ! You can currently get your hands on Mega Man X3 via the Mega Man X Collection for the PS2 and the GameCube.
Also, you all can now head over to the official Capcom Retro Idol Experience forum thread to start posting about tomorrow’s game, Little Nemo: The Dream Master!
Megaman X3 was definitely an amazing game from start to finish. Everything that you loved from the first two installments was present, and improved upon. As you would expect from Capcom, this game had a sound track that would keep you immersed for hours! It was almost impossible not to find yourself humming the various stage themes even after your mom forced you to stop playing and go get some fresh air ( ahhh the good o’l daysLaughing).
The game play was solid and fast paced, requiring you to have precise control over your sliding, and jumping to truly excel. You could fumble your way through a stage or two without these skills, but good luck taking down any bosses. It was difficult enough to give you a more than worthy challenge, but not unforgiving (arrhhmm GHOST N GOBBLINS). YEAH THAT’S RIGHT, I JUST MUD SLANG! The levels in X3 were very well designed, and displayed an amazing amount of detail for their time. It seemed that every level had a multitude of hidden rooms, and blocked locations which you had to keep in mind until you could acquire the proper power up to reach them.

This is a feature of all the Mega man X games, yet the rewards are so much better in X3. These power ups are second to none. To name a few, no other Mega man X game gives you the ability to dash straight up into the air, and the charged shots in this one made you feel like a real power house! A fully charged Gravity Well would send enemies flying off screen straight into orbit, and a maxed out Triad Thunder would have X punch the ground sending lightning tremors through his foes(that’s the X I love)!
A lot of you guys may not remember, but there is really a lot of content stored in this game that makes the experience feel very rewarding, and add to the games replay ability. There are 4 unique ride armors all with different weapons and abilities that can be achieved with some effort, and a few returns to various levels (and they are really fun to useLaughing). On top of that, you have some really cool hidden boss battles (Vile, Bit, and Byte) which are pretty challenging, yet fun. Ohhhh, and don’t act like you didn’t go bragging to your friends when you finally acquired that fated golden armor, making you feel invincible! It seemed like there was always something new and fantastic to achieve, and you didn’t grow tired of the process. That’s what makes this game stand apart from so many.
Let’s not forget the biggest addition of all. X is betrayed by Mac, and whipped off screen. Before you have a chance to ponder what happens next, the ceiling crackles and falls. Then in a moment so epic that your little brother shouts out AWESOME, with a theme song to match Zero lands on screen and you’re in control! I think that everyone froze at that moment. That’s when we knew we were in for something special. From the first time he appeared in X 1 and blew the arm off of Vile’s hulking ride armor, every fan had been silently praying that Capcom would let us control the red haired reploid, and they delivered! Although his use was limited, and you could not take him into a boss battle, it was definitely the coolest thing to pull Zero out, when you needed some back up.
His limited use forced you to use him wisely, and it kind of became a game in itself seeing if you could keep him till the end. I could go as far as saying that the positive feedback from Zeros playable appearance in X3, paved the way for the Mega man Zero series (which is equally as awesome). Let’s see them both in Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Capcom!!! Ok, ok back on subject! But seriously……… do that lol! Almost forgot that on top of it all, you can also achieve Zeros saber which dealt some extreme damage! Anyway, that’s my argument. Awesome game play, an amazing sound track, a crazy amount of content, replay ability, a rewarding experience and just hands down an amazing game. (Try going through with no power ups. It’s a blast)
