Capcom on the Game Boy – part one

Apr 28, 2014 // Minish Capcom

Back in 2011 I posted a weeklong tribute to Capcom’s presence on the Super NES, which at the time was celebrating its 20th birthday. In April 2014 the Game Boy hit its milestone 25th anniversary and plenty o’ folks around the web are posting their favorite games and memories of Nintendo’s black-and-white portable.

So, seems like the perfect time to post some of  my  fave GB Capcom titles, seeing as we published SO MANY amazing games for the platform and a number of them played a big part in my childhood.

1989, just after the GB launch. Probably playing Super Mario Land or Alleyway, though the below game wasn’t far off…

Gargoyle’s Quest (1990)

I wrote about this bad boy on Halloween 2011, so you can check out a more thorough post right here . But it bears repeating that 1) This was a robust, intense game that’s worth replaying even today, and 2) It’s available on the 3DS eShop right now .

The tl;dr version of the aforelinked post is that GQ starts as a seemingly simple side-scroller, then gradually reveals itself as a grand adventure in the style of other classics like Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Firebrand traverses an overworld map, then digs into 2D action levels, gains powers and abilities… honestly a whole lot for a handheld title in 1990. A great game that you can pick up today.

Darkwing Duck (1993)

I think DW was the last Disney Afternoon show I really followed, but in that time I was glued to the TV to see the latest episode and which villain might take center stage. When the NES and GB games came out, of course I had to pop ’em in and take a peek… and was delightfully surprised to see Capcom’s Disney legacy was still running strong.

Like many GB games it’s an action platformer, but DW played a bit like “Mega Man meets Disney,” which made it just that much more awesome. The similarities came as no surprise, as DW came from folks who were making great MM titles in the same general timeframe.

Speaking of which, those MM titles are about to hit the 3DS eShop, starting May 1 with the winner of our recent poll. Stay tuned for the winner, and then a new MM title every Thursday in May!

Any Game Boy memories relating to these two games, or any others for that matter?
