Capcom Digital Day Blow Out!
Mar 13, 2008 // Lost
Earlier this week we managed to turn our normally spacious lobby area into a place packed with a better ratio of Quality Fun Per Square Inch than Disneyland during our Capcom Digital Day. We invited members of the press and community to come and check out in person both the announced and unannounced new titles we have coming up this year. As the event title suggests, the focus was mostly on “digital” titles, downloadable titles to be released on XBLA, PSN, or PC, however, we still managed to sneak in a couple of full retail titles.
First up is the previously unannounced 1942: Joint Strike . Currently slated for a summer release, 1942: Joint Strike is, as you’ve probably guessed, based on Capcom’s 194X series of vertical shooters. Like the previous 194X games, this game is a classic arcade top down vertical shooter with 3D HD graphics which takes place in an alternate World War II. This time however, not only can you team up with a friend to take down enemy fighters, bombers, battleships, the two of can use the new Joint Strike attacks, much more powerful than your normal pea shooter attacks.
Bionic Commando Rearmed is a previous announced title that you’ve probably all heard about before. Most of the members of the media we invited had already seen this title at GDC, so we instead, we held a Challenge Room contest to see who complete one of the rooms in the shortest amount of time. Many were able to prove their man/womanhood, while others were shown to be n0obs. Nonetheless, this game is one of the most anticipated games by many, digital or full retail.
Another brand new title is the swashbuckler, Plunder , a casual real-time multiplayer strategy game. Developed by Certain Affinity and lead by Max Hoberman, designer of Halo 2 and 3’s multiplayer game, Plunder let’s players captain their own pirate ship to raid villages, sink merchants, seize towns, plunder gold, score wenches and say “Arrrrrrg” and “Yarrrrrrrr” a lot. Up to 4 of your fellow sailors can harmonize “Arrrrrg” on one console, or recruit a full chorus of 8 for LAN/Internet play. Finally, a map editor will be included with the game as well, allowing to customize and design your own battles.
One of the most popular kiosks was the finally publically playable version of the tongue twister, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix . Practically continuously occupied from beginning to end, SSFIITHDR was the one game everybody wanted to play, even though only Ken and Ryu was available. Really, there’s nothing else I can say about this game. Pretty much just go and click on the image above and go drool at some more new screenshots. Expect to finally see this title on your consoles this coming summer, even though that’s what we said last year .
The last digital title we showed is Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 , previously known simply as Commando 3. Apparently the old title simply wasn’t enough to contain the game, and we had to include more words to do so. This sequel to Commando and Mercenaries is a 3-player cooperative exercise in massive destruction. With vehicles. And Explosions. And vehicular explosions. Best of all, those who purchase WotB: C3 will be automatically enrolled in the public beta of SSFIITHDR. Can’t get a better deal for your 10 bucks/800 MS points than that.
We also took the opportunity to formally announce Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition , even though it was already the least best kept secret because of the leaky Interwebs. Set for release on May 27th, LP Colonies features the familiar gameplay and content from the previous LP titles, but also has a plethora of new game modes for both single and multiplayer online modes, 8 new weapons , new playable characters and 4 new multiplayer maps . Best of all, Xbox 360 and PC cross-platform play will now be supported! New single player game modes includes Score Attack, where the destruction of each enemy and object awards players with points, Trial Battle Mode, where you take on each of the game’s bosses, one after another, and Off Limit Mode, where you can go to town with super charged weapons filled with unlimited ammo along with increased speed of movement. Multiplayer game modes include the new Akrid Hunter, where players randomly get to play as a powerful Akrid while others playing as humans attempt to take it down. VS Annihilator is an escort type game where each team tries to destroy the other team’s VS while protecting their own. Akrid Egg Battle is a capture-the-flag type game involving Akrid eggs. Other modes include Counter Grab, Point Snatcher and Egg Bandit.
No game announcements would be complete without a new Mega Man game, and so we announced that the previously Japan only game RPG game, Mega Man Star Force 2 will be coming to Western shores. Mega Man Star Force 2 will be available in two versions, Zerker X Ninja and Zerker X Saurian. Like its predecessor, Star Force 2 blends a unique formula of RPG exploration elements with fast-paced action as players travel and battle between coexisting worlds, the physical world and the virtual Wave World. Those interested in connecting with friends and forming “Brother Band” networks will be able to take advantage of Nintendo Wi-Fi or Wireless LAN to connect to each other regardless of their location.
And last but not least, even though we weren’t able to secure a playable build in time for the event, we announced online game modes for We Love Golf! that is sure to bring smiles to Wii golfers everywhere. Not only will the Western version of We Love Golf! feature two exclusive characters, Western Wii golfers will also be able to go online and bring the links to life with up to four players for Friend Play and World Play game modes.
